Poet's Cove Resort & Spa - Beautiful view from spa

Poet's Cove Resort & Spa

(42 reviews)

Go for the steam cave, assuming you have time. It's wonderful and truly part of a natural cave…read more Good service and friendly staff. I'll return again and again.

It seems people from the US use Yelp more than other places for reviews, so here is mine copied…read morefrom another place. This resort was someone's dream at some point in history. They found this amazing location and built it into a really beautiful spot. But somewhere along the way something happened to make them give up on caring about what makes a resort a resort. The rooms were fine, but lack the decor and little details you expect from a resort at this price. The furniture was uncomfortable and not even enough places to sit in the living room as there were beds to sleep in. The staff don't care if you're there or not. Just completely disengaged. No good mornings or even smiles as you go by. The restaurant was dirty, run down and understaffed. The food was mediocre. The coffee shop staff was unfriendly and seemed to care more about coworker friends than the guests. And what is with the cigarette receptacles every 10 feet? I get having a smoking section, but the entire shoreline seems to be one at Poet's Cove. Everywhere else we stayed in the Gulf Islands was strictly non smoking. Finally, I don't understand why there is a trailer park in the parking lot. An ACTUAL trailer park with trailer park people living in it. Four on wheels that look to have been there for years and a double wide that is obviously permanent. If your expectations are only of a mid-tier hotel with a larger living space, you'll be satisfied. But that's not the price you're paying here. And just skip the restaurant and head to the Copper Otter across the island, whose food and staff were both top notch.

Roche Harbor Marina - Another historic and beautiful main street.

Roche Harbor Marina

The marina at Roche Harbor Resort isn't cheap (but interestingly, it's about the same to moor here…read moreat it is to moor at the much humbler marina at nearby Deer Harbor), but they pack the experience with so much value that it is actually a 'must visit' stop for the discriminating yachtsman. THE ROSES: Oh my, where to start? The staff (which will cheerfully help you dock and leave) are young, friendly, efficient, and - god help me - very easy on the eyes. I get a feeling working here is a very desirable summer gig, because they seem to be able to hire the 'cream of the crop' of the local (?) youth. The physical plant (docks, power, water, onshore amenities) are in perfect working order and impeccably clean. What really puts RHM over the top is all the little extras. Want to do some grilling dockside? They will deliver a top-quality (Saber) gas grill to your slip on request. Complimentary pump outs (via the 'Phecal Phreak' Pumpout service) are also available on request. Visiting yachtsmen receive on arrival a lovely 'welcome packet' which includes vouchers to a complimentary wine reception, and a punchcard that gives you a free RHM hat if you visit four of the onshore stores. The marina has a fairly well-stocked grocery store, wine merchant, multiple clothing and gift shops, and both casual and fine dining options. There is also a boatyard/marine mechanic (Phil Brooks), and a small marine chandlery. THE THORNS: None worth mentioning. THE VERDICT: Roche Harbor Marina is one of the - if not THE - premiere yachting destination in the Pacific Northwest. While not bargain travel, RHM delivers probably the most 'bang for the buck' of any marina in the region. Very highly recommend.

We've moored here many times over the years and love this place for the following reasons:…read more --phekal freak has been entertaining us for over a decade--and it's a great service --lots of docking help--this place can be windy, so help with lines is always appreciated --great docks, showers and fuel services --cute but expensive grocery store --great gathering places for dock parties, complete with shade and grills --awesome eye for safety with fire extinguishers and ladders everywhere The one unawesome thing? Massive wooden cleats that are hard to work and oddly spaced. Some are broken and basically useless. That's a valid concern but it's the only one I have about this wonderful marina.
