This was a nice place to go for a hike with friends and a dog.People that are there seem to be extremely friendly. It's a clean park with a lot of different trails. It also has a playground, kayaking and boating. You're also allowed to fish there. I would recommend this. This park also offers a lot of benches to sit down in rest while Hiking. Please for a day trip with the family or friends. read more

We made a quick pit stop after picking up my daughter from her camp. Poinsett state park has lake where kids and dogs can swim/ play with water. They also has campground site and cabin to rent for your stay. Quite nature place and not really busy even on the week end. Has playground and clean bathroom for the visitors. Although our visit was short but we enjoyed it. read more

You'll find Poinsett across the way from a weapons testing site. We were walking along and did hear one rather large explosion, which was scary and cool at the same time. Dog flipped out for a second, but got over it pretty fast. The hike was amazing, Coquina Trail linked to some others, had to take a stroll through the Spanish Moss lined trail near the Knots, talk about amazing! Did see a gator in the lake, a little one, but a real live alligator! The old mill remains were neat to see and the woods below were a bit different as well! Get out there and see the world! read more

Great park away from all the city commotion. We came here for a nice day hike, and it did not disappoint. It was at the beginning of April after a few days of rain, but the trails were still clean and well marked. The mosquitos were beginning to be out, but I feel like later in the summer they would be a lot worse. Definitely apply bug repellent and sunscreen any time of the year. There are also good camping spots and trailer parking if you plan a longer weekend. A good fishing pond which may or may not contain gators as well. There is a nice visitors center with friendly staff. There are also some cabins you are able to book, but make sure to do it in advance. We will definitely be returning to enjoy some more hikes and possibly some camping! Great overall experience. read more

Although I have a park pass on the visit many of them, this might be my favorite state park in the entire South Carolina system. Located where the Piedmont meets low country, one would not expect such hilly terrain but yet this park, situated in the high hills of the Santee's, provides great elevation change for those of you looking for a decent hike. The only reason that you remember you're not in the mountains is because of the Spanish moss on the trees and the fact that there are swampy areas at the bottom. This place is great if you love history, hiking, fishing, camping, swimming, boating, mountain biking, or if you just want to picnic with the family. There are quaint little cabins for the more gourmet campers in the group. There are several miles of hiking trails with a surprising gain in elevation for being in an area that would considered low lands. The trails are extremely well-maintained and marked, and you really have a mountain feel, except for the Spanish moss in the trees. The lake is a great place to have a picnic by, to cast a line, or you can rent a paddleboat or canoe. There is also a roped-off swimming area which provides a great refreshing activity for the kids or the young at heart. The mill ruins are my favorite spot. Built in 1761, the ruins provide a perfect backdrop for photographs or for climbing around and enjoying. It was a good educational opportunity for the kids. There is a very nice playground for the kids but we didn't bother with that because we had so much fun doing all of the other activities. There are several Civilian Conservation Corps-era structures in the park so people who enjoy history and park architecture can enjoy those too. Located a few minutes outside of Sumter and less than an hour from Columbia, this is a can't miss place! I strongly recommend it! read more

This park is absolutely beautiful and a hidden gem. Me and my dog came up from Florida and stayed here to visit Congaree NP. The campground is awesome I love that the tent only area is well shaded and surrounded by the woods. There are numerous trails to go on that are accessible right from the campsites. The park staff was welcoming and friendly. The showers were also decently clean and hot! read more

Beautiful park with several well marked trails. We loved the waterfall and streams we found during the hike. The overlook was a great view and nice spot to relax! A highlight was that we saw an armadillo and I didn't even know there were any around here! We will definitely be back! read more

Poinsett is a little deserted but still adorable. It's not as popular as it used to be but still a fun place for family and group fun. We used to go on the trails and have picnics there. They have kept it up well. read more

The trails here and nice and usually kept up well. A good amount of choices to choose from ranging from short to longer lengths. My personal favorite is the Hi-loop. read more

Wow! This was a fun hike but the Coquina Trail was flooded in, so we had to turn around and take a different path to get to The Knot Splice Loop. I'd take the Hi Knot instead of the Lo Knot, just seemed a little more scenic and a straight shot. 7/10 foliage, accordingly with the hype. Ha! read more

Nice park, you can find all sort of trails: easy, moderate, hard, mostly flat, higher grounds .... The trails I used with my dog was damaged and we had to turn around, unfortunately! Make sure to spend time around the lake, there is a nice spot next to it to take pretty pictures ! read more

Averaging $22/day (rate higher on Fri&Sat) Very narrow road up to Poinsett were paved but full of potholed and tight turns. Will not fit 2 rigs travel opposite direction, so watch for possible turnout to yield to uphill traffic. Soon the paved road degraded into bumpy dirt road leading to campsites. Most sites are on dirt so it won't be leveled, only 3 sites near the back are conveniently L-shaped and leveled with gravels. Scattered oak trees provide plenty of shades on all campsites. Bathroom looks rustic outside, but very clean and fully functional inside. Strong enough WiFi at Visitor Center and cabin, but zilch at campground. LTE is 1bar and will occasionally drop to 3G. Beautiful pond for kayaking behind visitor center complete with ruins and small waterfalls. Hilltop picnic gazebo provide shelter on sunny day, but do nothing to shield hundred of deer flies out for blood meal. Screened shelter in the middle of the campground has little book section and toys for kids. The campground has lots of trails and open spaces for folks with pooches to roam around. CCC did good job to provide rustic feel to the park. Will stay here again if we down this way. read more

Just moved to Columbia from Minnesota. As a Midwesterner, I was anxious to experience the hiking scene South Carolina provides with their mountainous and coastal terrains. I came to Poinsett State Park on a whim looking for something to occupy my time on a Friday off, and was decently satisfied. To begin, the park was surprising quiet for a beautiful Friday. I enjoyed the peaceful hike, but I thought it was a detail worth noting. I hiked their longest trail, Whippoorwill, about 5 miles there and back (10 total). The hike was easy with a mostly flat terrain and only a few minor hills. My only complaint was that it failed to be interestingly scenic. The entire trail was roughly the same view, that of forestry. While that is all fine and well, I would expect the "long" hike to be a little more rewarding: a mountainous outlook at the end, a scenic river, something. Overall I enjoyed myself and felt it was a Friday afternoon well spent. However, I think I will try a new park next time. read more
