A female who is trying to have a good night out with friends shouldn't have to worry about some 35 year old, wanna be 21, popped collar wearing douche bucket making fun of her behind her back and making her uncomfortable. There are many other bars in the area that we went to that night and Cullpeppers was the ONLY bar where this girl was made to feel like she had to be ashamed for walking in the place.

My wife and I stopped by on a Saturday night and it just happened to be Karaoke night! I immediately signed up to do "Good Ole Boys Like Me" by Don Williams. Which I then nailed! I ordered shots and they were sorta more like half shots. That's the only thing keep this place from being five stars. It might have something to with the fact that they were in a dry county I dunno. If I lived in the area I would likely be calling the Happy Cajun my second home. The bar is full of locals. It was a Saturday night when we stopped in and every Saturday is karaoke night. Steve H and I quickly made friends with the guy running the karaoke - he was awesome and did a great job! I drank some gin and tonics and had a couple of shots and enjoyed the atmosphere. The shots were a little small, so not sure what was up with that. I assumed it had something to do with the dry county and how you have to have a membership to drink. This is the kind of place where people are friendly and everyone is welcome it seemed. I saw all walks of life in the bar, which is always a good thing. The bartenders were great! There were pool tables and people having a great time all around. I could tell the people singing karaoke get lots of practice and likely sing the same songs over and over, but that is another reason why this bar was so awesome. It almost felt like going back in time a bit here too. The bar is a little divey and kind of a whole in the wall place, but this all adds to the persona of the bar. The two things that hurt the rating were the lack of beer and smoking inside. While the smoking inside is something I don't like I can look over that. But being a bar and not having beer is an issue. It wasn't just beer we wanted but it was also beer other patrons wanted. This could be a really great local chill bar if they could keep a steady supply of beer. If they would consider only allowing smoking on the back patio or elsewhere outside the bar would be one of the best bars I've visited. I agreed to go without any expectations, except for having a great time with friends who have been and Mamou's international reputation for its genre of music. I was amazed by the experience, to say the least! Fred's Lounge is small, intimate and its music broadcasts live every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to around 2 p.m. on KVPI AM radio out of nearby Ville Platte, Louisiana there every Saturday. There was no cover, people there were friendly and embraced visitors as family. Even a wall flower could not help rump-rocking in their seat, clapping to the beat, stomping their feet, or even being coerced to cut-a-rug with a perfect stranger, while embracing the unique Cajun music rhythms. The band that day was local famed Don Fontenot and the Louisiana Boys. I could not help admiring the bass player's guitar strap made out of alligator hide. The craftsmanship was incredible! Also Don Fontenot, the accordion player's passion and creativity was spot on! The band played traditional music in Cajun French, however at times they played American classics like Proud Mary. They even played La Grange by Z. Z. Top in both English and Cajun French. However the most memorable song was "Ride the Donkey" with a guest performance from a local lady in the lounge, who he-hawed better than the best Jenny! I am certain it wasn't her first time performing this song! If you are a music enthusiast, looking for a fun destination trip or a simply a unique memorable experience in Louisiana, Fred's Lounge is a must!
