What a lovely and safe hostel. Located 1 block from Waikiki Beach in a very hip and trendy neighbourhood. The staff are so friendly and they allow you to store your luggage if you arrive before 2pm. And you can change into a bathing suit and hit the beach in the office bathroom. I'm staying in a mixed, air conditioned dorm. I paid a little more for there to only be 2 bunk beds. Still highly affordable. It cost me $250 for a 6 day/ 7 night stay. read more

I can tell you that you may read many reviews that express all kinds of things about this Hostel. But let me give you a perspective I have from speaking with the early morning young ladies at the front desk Rachel and Jordan absolutely amazing calm, professional, and beyond courteous young ladies. Who calmly and kindly listened to my frustrations completely beyond their control, in a way that brought me back to a state of tranquilly in what they called the Aloha way. The area is absolutely wild at night especially that one with a full moon rising over the ocean park with in view from the front. so if you are uncomfortable with the double room attachments and the possibility of possible foot traffic through the night via guests while you are in one of the four bunks as a bathroom is shared. Then you should consider it before you book your reservations. I for one ended up having a positive experience. read more

I just can't get past how dirty it is. Kind people for the most part work there. Also can't beat the beach toys area which is compromised of leftover items from past guests. The units are just so dirty. There is basic sweep and trash change done daily I think, but they badly need a deep clean. It's hard to feel comfortable when taking a shower involves a moldy shower curtain and nowhere to place your items bc everything looks dirty. My girlfriend, Carol from UK stayed at this hostel because Hokondo Waikiki Beachside Hostel was booked solid for weeks, so she had to stay at this hostel just down the street from Hokondo. There are several things I must mention to you regarding this hostel: this hostel has poor security, very poor customer service, the dorm rooms are priced higher than Hokondo Hostel, the receptionist lack professionalism, no phones in the Polynesian Hostel dorm rooms as Hokondo possesses for every room at the hostel, and according to Carol-the rooms are much smaller than Hokondo Hostel. Oh, I forgot to mention there are no kitchens in the dorm rooms, only one dining microwave area is located downstairs in the hostel's Lanai area. TLDR: Find another hostel or just suck it up and pay for a hotel. This place sucks. I stayed in the 12 bed room. There is no air conditioning and it is extremely hot . There were 12 beds in the room but literally no one talks to each other. When you check in, they hand you sheets - they don't even give you a made bed. I've stayed in much cheaper hostels around the world which were always much nicer. The bathroom has no windows, and because the room is already unbearably hot and humid, the bathroom is even more so. You can't even dry off and put on clothes in it because it is soo hot and humid after taking a shower. At like 7:45am, the garbage trucks come and make the loudest sounds you've ever heard that can be heard so loudly from even the 4th floor. Louder than gunshots. The trucks stay in the area for probably thirty minutes (no exaggeration) continuing to make the sounds. There no possible way you can sleep through it. To make it worse, because it is so unbearably hot and there is no air conditioning, the windows and doors need to be left constantly open. There is also an outdoor common area for the hostel (no indoor common rooms and nowhere to hang out or even sit in the rooms (not even one chair) ). The outdoor common area would be fine, except they kick you out at 10pm because of some supposed noise ordinances in the city. The thing is, it's never even loud out there so it shouldn't be a problem. They should be responsible enough to tell people to quiet down rather than just kick everyone out at 10. So after 10pm, there's no where to even sit at the hostel. I came back with some food, only to realize there was no where to eat it. Bottom line - sucks read more

I will start with the positives and say that the people were very friendly! The lady at the desk and the fellow travelers were your typical hostel experience. There was also free parking a few blocks away (near a Pokémon stop, so that was a bonus). Lastly, free coffee/tea and surf board rentals are only 12 bucks if you are into that kind of thing. My husband and I got a private room because it was just a little extra from the shared rooms. I have done the dorm room experience while in Europe and have enjoyed meeting new people that way, but my husband and I had been camping all week and were ready for our own bed! The rooms are set up like apartments, the first room you walk into is the shared dorm and the back room is a private bedroom. I had not experienced the private rooms within the shared dorm before, so that did cause some confusion on my part--thinking that I had accidentally gotten a shared space. Down sides are as follows: 1) No AC (but they have a very nice fan, and it works fine with Hawaiian climate) 2) It is on a loud and busy street (it calms down at around 10 pretty well though) 3) it is not very clean. The sheets are fresh but the rooms are pretty beat down and the bathroom had a lot of hair along the rims and by the toilet. This is not my cup of tea with my OCD. Overall, I would just get on Priceline or hotels.com and get a room last minute for 20 bucks more. That's what we would have paid going out to eat and it would insure at least a more clean stay. read more

Whether you're around for a couple days or doing a long-term stay, this is the place for you! First and foremost, the location is unbeatable - a block from the beach and within walking distance of most conveniences. Every single person at the front desk was friendly and accommodating! This was my first hostel stay so I don't have anything to compare it to but I feel pretty good saying that this place provides the basics, and just that. Beds (at least the bunks) are pretty bare-bones but fresh linens are there when you need them. Bathroom was as clean as it could be, considering it's shared with 5 people. The common area was certainly well-used, but it seemed like everyone was respectful of others. Couple stipulations - a pretty heavily trafficked street runs outside and the hostel doesn't have AC, so windows will need to be open which means noise will come in. Quiets down later at night but something to keep in mind. I'll reiterate that the (bunk) beds are quite basic - a very thin mattress coupled with a very thin pillow. If sleep/comfort is a concern, I would look for different rooms/elsewhere. All said and done - I would stay here again in a heartbeat and will recommend it to everyone I know! read more

If you're looking for a cheap bed by the beach, this is a safe and friendly option. The sheets and the bathroom in my four bed shared room were clean. Check-in was ridiculously slow but you know, it's a hostel and they're on island time. So don't expect anything to happen snappy. The common area was a bit quirky. A big tele seems to entertain the masses and nobody was interested in the lone hammock but me. Go figure. Laundry facility available, though the blond bare-chested hostel clerk managed to set the drier on fire but stuffing a foam mattress in there. He seemed a little clueless, that one. Hopefully they'll have it fixed shortly. Oh, if you haven't stayed in a hostel before... bring earplugs. Good ones. Since there are a lot of bars and clubs nearby, people were wandering in/out until very late at night. Not a family friendly atmosphere, but just fine if you're 21-50 years old. read more

A pretty chill place to stay if you're looking for somewhere cheap with just the basics. I stayed here with my sister for 8 days while visiting Oahu and had no complaints! We paid about $30 a night for a mixed 4 bed dorm room with one bathroom to share with another private 2 person room. No AC except for one lone fan lol. We were given fresh bedding upon arrival and for an additional $2, a towel that could be exchanged for fresh ones whenever for the rest of our stay. Other amenities include free pancakes every morning and a ton of beach gear for borrow. There are optional dinners and excursions that one can take part in as well. We stayed with other tourists from Switzerland, Australia, and England who were all chill and did their own thing. Btw, there are also lockers in each room, so don't forget to bring a lock for your valuables. A great place to stay just a block from Waikiki Beach if no AC is not a problem! read more

This place is such a vibe! I'll be real the price is reflected in the amenities, one bathroom for a room of 10 people isn't ideal but for the price I'd be fine with the floor. Most importantly, as a young woman traveling alone trusting strangers is not an easy thing to do. But I really appreciate the staff and travelers at the hostel going out of their way to make me feel welcomed and safe. They have hammocks, surfboards and snorkels you can use. I didn't plan much for my trip to Oahu but the location was great because without walking a mile there's a gorgeous beach, motorbike rental, multiple bus stations and a million clubs and restaurants. Stayed for two nights in October. Had a bunk in an all-female dorm that included a full bathroom. Had all of the expected hostel amenities (sheets, lockers, common areas, etc.), and did not run into any issues during my stay. I did not use the kitchen so can't comment on that. I was somewhat surprised at the very negative reviews, as I've definitely stayed in hostels that deserved a one-star rating, and this is not one of them. Pros: - Good price for the location, especially if you're a solo traveler on a budget. - Great location--easy walking distance to Waikiki beach (although the street it's on is mostly just hostels/hotels and apartments, not super fancy). - The staff I spoke with were friendly and did a good job of getting me acquainted with the property. Cons: - Parking is limited and costs $12/night. - No A/C, which was not surprising but was more of a problem than I expected in the 85+ degree heat and humidity. All in all was what I expected and a pretty good choice for traveling cheaply for a few nights. Would recommend if you like hostels. read more

OK is my response on this place. At least it was cheap... Definitely a social hostel, though that also depends on who's staying there at the same time as you. The owner is super sweet and some employees! I slept in a 12 people mixed dorm and that was kind of creepy some nights. A lot of light into the room since nothing is covering the windows. And the bed was also crap so my back didn't benefit from sleep. Social room was ok though the kitchen is to small and there is ants crawling around everywhere :( also no storage for your food since the fringes are to small for the amount of people they allow at the hostel... read more

Not the best place I ever stayed at... And trying to think if I have ever stayed in anything worse, however nothing comes to mind. I've stayed in many European hostels when backpacking through Europe about 10 years ago, but this had to be the most run down I have seen, or should I say that I have stayed. I am sure there is worse out there. But if you are on a budget, then you can't be too picky. The main things that I had qualms with: the paint, the grime, and the lack of blankets. Yes really, lack of blankets. I thought I read though that linens were included, I guess that only meant you got a sheet to sleep with. Luckily I bought a huge scarf at the market that I used as a blanket when it got a little chilly at night. The floor was always sandy and dirty. Not a huge concern, since I live on Maui, and anyone who lives by the beach knows that sand is inevitable. All the furnishings are old, there were two out of three lights in the ceiling fans that were out, and the paint on all the walls was extremely dirty. A can of paint is $20, that is a cheap fix that is unforgivable. Don't get me started on the bathrooms... Lol. All I can say is, if you book in advance, you can get a budget hotel for about 100 bucks on oahu. That is probably a much better option, than the $64 double room we paid, and still had to share a bathroom with the main room. But for my sister and I, we do everything last minute, and made the most of our stay at the Polynesian Beach Club. After all, it really is only a 2 minute walk from the beach. read more

Sadly, tonight is my last of 8 nights at the Polynesian Beach Club. I have enjoyed my stay here and would recommend it to anyone. I made some friends and talked to some ubercool people. Initially, after booking airfare to Hawaii, I went through Expedia to find a hoTel...HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Then after realizing how irresponsible it would be to cash out my 401(k) for a vacation, I had the epiphany to look into hoStels. I read reviews and went with the Polynesian because it was the only hostel that had no reviews by someone who contracted Bed Bugs. And it just so happened to be one of the cheapest. I was checked in by Daniel, very friendly and professional. I got the semi-private room for $65 that had a full sized bed with a shared bathroom. There were sheets on the bed but luckily, I'd read a suggestion in another Yelp review to bring a blanket as they do not provide them and I was glad I did. I went on several excursions that the Polynesian runs and I encourage doing the same as they are a great bargain and fun experience. Tuesday morning I took the hike to Diamond Head with Joe as the tour guide. He is a kind, thoughtful person and offered up a bunch of tidbit information throughout the hike, plus some helpful advice. Wednesday I took the North Shore tour with Jess as the guide. He is a fun cool laid back person who made the tour fun for the whole group. They also offer tours to Kailua (I went there on my own and it was nice) and scuba diving excursions. They've stopped doing Pearl Harbor even though I think their website still shows that they do. They have dinners a few times a week that you sign up for. During my week I had the Chicken Alfredo Pasta ($5), Roasted Pig/Pork w/ Rice ($7), and Spagetti Pesto ($5). These are great because they're cheap, tasty and convenient, plus they come with cake! Kevin who cooked is great and so is the friendly older guy who acted as his maître d. Jen and Daniel who both work there do massages for $25/ 30 minutes. I got one with Jen and it was nice after a long hike. I was pretty stoked about the Free Pancake breakfast I'd seen advertised. It's served from 8:30-10:00 am......and I do mean IT, and PancakE breakfast, as in singular not plural. I was surprised my first morning when I learned that you get ONE pancake at a time. You can get back to the end of the line after you finish your one pancake, or if you go at 9:15 instead of 8:30 you may luck out and be able to take more than one, if there's nobody behind you in line. They also offer coffee and tea in the office. When I'd read the Yelp reviews on the Polynesian, the most common complaints are about those pancakes (being "monotonous"), the cleanliness of the hostel, and the noise. Well just to address those points, nobody's forcing the pancakE down anyone's throat, it's a complimentary amenity they offer. Yeah, it's not as clean as, say, The Waldorf Astoria, but it's a HOSTEL. It should be a prerequisite that anyone who wants to review a hostel must first be able to DEFINE hostel. It's cheap, basic, communal accomodations that's half a step above camping, it shouldn't be compared to a five star hotel. As far as the noise, yeah it's pretty noisy at night. Luckily my old apartment (in FS NY) was above a bar and an Irish tap dancing school, so I'm quite used to noise and it doesn't bother me. If you do decide to book at Polynesian, here's some suggestions: 1. Take a blanket and (2) thin towels-one for shower, one for beach 2. Go to the Safeway and buy some groceries-fruit, yogurt, whatever you like to eat with your pancakE. 3. Sign up for the tours and dinners and talk to people! 4. Rent a moped from Paradise on Wheels on Kuhio, NOT the place next door! It's $19.95/3 hours, $29.95/8 hours $34/24 hours-head east on 72 ;) 5. Wear flipflops around your room/the hostel because it's impossible to get rid of every grain of sand when it's a block away from the beach even though they do clean. 6. You will certainly be stopping at the ABC store at some point. They're on every corner. Save your receipts because if you spend $100 combined, you get a prize like a mug or something. 7. Be prepared to witness the homeless epidemic. They are everywhere. I heard multiple people from the hostel saying "If I had to be homeless, at least it's in Hawaii", well these homeless are often addicts, and too zonked out to even know what planet they're on, let alone they're in beautiful Hawaii. I usually played Santa Claus to them and gave them multiple cigarettes or cookies or whatever, because what other pleasure do they have in life. Try to be kind to them or at least don't be disgusted. In summary, the Polynesian has friendly and helpful staff, many extras to offer, very low rates, incredible location, and No reason NOT to stay here. read more

We spent just one night at this hostel and thought it was great, especially for the price! The beds were comfortable and they provided clean sheets. They rented towels that you could change out as many times as you wanted, and they could be either bath or beach towels. They provided free pancakes and coffee for breakfast, and had a locked room to keep our luggage since we weren't leave until the afternoon the next day. They also had signup sheets for activities you could join for nearly every day of the week. We would definitely recommend this hostel to other travelers! read more

I came to the Polynesian beach hostel with high hopes (even after the mixed reviews found on different sites), however giving them two stars feels generous. I can only speak for the dorm I stayed at (#300), the beds are EXTREMELY creaky... to the point where they would wake everyone in the room up when anyone got in or out of bed - even just rolling over or adjusting. This is a hostel and i get that you can't expect it to be spotless but this place could really use a deep cleaning, the bathroom looked like it had not been cleaned in months with mold and dirt crusted onto the walls and roof. Yuck. Also a significant sized hole on top of the shower (picture attached). Bed covers are ripped and not sanitary at all. The staff was overall just uninterested in anything. The people cooking breakfast in the morning would not even speak back when spoken to, just make faces. Also this place felt quite unsafe as they have no regulation on who comes in and out. Met two men who hung out every day in the kitchen, on my last day there they admitted to me they're not even guests of the hostel. Cleaning crew left door to dorm room wide open in the middle of the day, not that it mattered because the door would not lock either way. The place where to stay can really impact your vacation. I had so much fun here it was absurd. The staff felt more like friends than employees by the end of the stay. Special shoutout to the Professor, Bobby, and Grandpa for being awesome. The Super Bowl party was great. Also definitely sign up for the offered tours. I only had time to do the North Shore tour, but it was the best $20 I've ever spent. They rent out snorkel equipment, surfboards, and bikes for free/ super cheap so that was a plus. The hostel next door rents out mopeds. Also, the location was impeccable. A block away from the beach and Kapiolani park and easy to run/bike to Diamond Head. Quiet time at 10 was strictly enforced, but you could always find a group of people at 9:45 who were ready to go out or hit the beach. I love this place!!! My man and I took off last minute from LA to enjoy a budget trip to Oahu and PBH was the perfect host for our adventure. One block from the beach and near everything! We never needed a car. Free wi-fi, pancakes in the morning and on some nights, free BBQ! We had the semi-private room for privacy and the decor was bohemian, simple and clean. We made new friends and enjoyed the tours (Rob, Margaret and Sean are awesome guides!!!!) Jesse the manager runs the ship and keeps the vibe relaxed and friendly. I had so much fun at this hostel! My boyfriend and I stayed here for a week in a semiprivate room, for a very affordable price. Very very friendly staff! They were all incredibly helpful when we got stuck traveling standby and couldn't make the first 5 nights of our reservation. We went on the North Shore tour for $20, and had a wonderful time with the other guests and our wonderful guide. We also took advantage of the snorkel equipment out for guests to use free of charge. It saved us about $20 each for our trip to Hanauma Bay. The kitchen was spotless and well-stocked with pots/pans and utensils and the dorm rooms were impeccably clean as well as the bathrooms for the entirety of our stay. Certainly not a kid or family friendly place, but as a travelling college student, that is a plus. The location was fantastic, right next to the bus stop, the cheapest scooter rentals in town, and, most importantly, the beach! Our semi-private room had double windows so noise from the outside alley was nonexistent when they were closed. It also had a ceiling fan which was nice for the warm nights. My only complaint I would say, would be that they advertised bike rentals on their website but when we inquired they insisted they did not have them. read more

This place has awesome tours on monday, wednesday, and friday. They're $25 and I can definitely recommend them! Each tour takes you to a different part of the island, and when you've taken all of them you've pretty much covered all of Oahu. The staff is very helpful, always available for advice on where to go and how. Breakfast is included but it's always pancakes (different kinds) so after a couple of days you might wanna go elsewhere for breakfast. The dorms feel a bit crammed and there's no airconditioning, but if you turn on the fan in the room and open the windows, it isn't really a problem. Three times a week there's dinner for $7, and the food is just lovely (can definitely recommend). All in all I give 4 stars for the tours, the staff, the atmosphere, and the dinners. The missing star is for the dorms and the slightly monotenous breakfast. read more

Disclaimer: This is my first and only hostel experience, as such my opinions are not the most experienced. The Good: The place is very inexpensive and is literally right next to the beach. With food, ABC stores, and drinks all within walking distance, the location could not be better (Fellow gays: HULA is right next to this place and Fusions is totally within walking distance). The atmosphere is friendly and the staff is helpful. The Bad: There is no A/C, just a fan that isn't super helpful. This is a problem for some of us, and may drive some folks away, as it does get a bit hot. The rooms are cleaned by individuals who are working for their stay, so the cleanliness is somewhat dependent on that individuals who cleans your room that day. The staff are sometimes hard to understand and the young lady who helped me seemed to have trouble with renewing my key card. Bring your own lock. Only one kitchen, tv, and lounge area makes for a crowded place during peak times (this is nice for some, but not all). Other: Sand is everywhere, but this is the beach. Side Note: Apparently Waikiki Beachside Hostel has A/C and multiple kitchens that are shared by 2 rooms. Friends who stayed there for a night mentioned this, but I was not able to verify, so it may be worth checking out. read more

I've stayed at many hostels (8 beds, mixed rooms, the lot), and this one is possibly the worst one I've ever encountered. cons: - BUGS. FILTH. The bathroom was disgusting and both the room and bathroom were crawling with bugs. - Couldn't sleep due to the street noise, bright lights from street signs, and fear of bed bugs (I didn't actually get any bites, but the place was so gross I was convinced there had to be bed bugs). - shitty beds. The frames were falling apart. I was worried the bed would collapse while I climbed up to the top bunk. - I made the mistake of going with the mixed dorm because I wanted to be in the same room as my male friend. I ended up the only girl in a room full of sketchy guys, but I guess that was just bad luck. It was so bad that even with ear plugs I decided to try to sleep on the hammocks they have downstairs. I ended up being eaten alive by mosquitoes pros: - boogie boards, beach mats, and other fun stuff you can borrow for free. - good location near the beach and stores My fault for being cheap. Wonderful stay at the Polynesian. Free towels and linens and spacious rooms - some with AC some without. Hammocks in common areas were a wonderful addition and ample seating for spending time working away from home. As close as you can get to Waikiki and a bunch of great local food options. Both members of staff Jack Ring and Tejas Vanjare were incredibly helpful in welcoming my group and I and making us feel at home. They went out of their way to bring us around to local spots and spend time at the various beaches on the island. Loved this place - was shocked reading the other reviews here and had to check to make sure I had the right page. Obviously it's not going to be super clean since it's a hostel you're staying in for 30 bucks. Free linens and towels (some reviews say you pay extra for towels...I didn't). Free pancakes for breakfast (unlimited, some reviews say you only get one, which wasn't the case) 24/7 desk reception Employees were really helpful. I asked to switch rooms when a friend decided to come stay last minute and they did it no problem. Nice shared kitchen with two fridges, TV, hammocks, tables and chairs Quiet hours after 10pm Didn't have any problems with other guests (obviously will change overtime) Community room not as big as other more "party" locations. Take that as a good or bad. No maximum age for guests like some other hostels No AC (but rooms had fans) Wifi was so so, but there's a starbucks a block away if you need it Employees sometimes hung out when not on shift (probably the "unprofessionalism" others are referring to, I didn't have a problem) Thinking the place may have been revamped since some of these reviews were written since I didn't have any of the problems others did. Stayed here for two weeks while on vacation in Waikiki with my younger sister. It was our first time staying in a hostel, and my sister is only 16, so we booked the semi private room. It was worth the money! The room was locked and only we had access. It was very clean, and had clean sheets, and a ceiling fan. The bathroom was also quite clean, and had a fresh bath mat every day. Rooms were cleaned regularly. Pancake breakfast was pretty much every morning, and it was fantastic! The tour offered by the hostel were unbelievably awesome. We did the diamond head sunrise hike ($1) and the North shore day trip ($25). Both amazing!! The kitchen in the hostel is pretty standard. A couple fridges, A stove, and lots of utensils. Relatively clean! Overall we had a great stay here! It's a great location (2 min walk to beach), and has lots to offer. Would definitely recommend, and would definitely stay here again!! 2 stars only for price....When I arrived to the mixed bunk I was freaked out at first bc I was the only female and there was a sixty + shirtless guy sitting on the bottom bunk who actually turned out to be very cool and had to show me how to use the showers. My main issue.. Was dirty.And the guy working in the morning was kinda rude. He asked "how was it"? And assuming he meant the accommodations I said uh ok.
