Artisanal coffee from tree to cup, this farm is a true labor of love - and also a B&B. Great fun seeing every step of the intensely laborious process to grow, harvest and prepare the beans: 7 pounds ripe fruit yield just 1 pound of finished product. Hosts, owners and coffee fanatics Kurt L. and Sebastian L. serve tour guests several *fine* cups in their new-new "convention center" and tasting room. Oh yeah, whole beans are $34/lb, ulp. Tours offered Tues-Sat at 11am, $20 for two hours, call ahead for reservations and directions! First hour is drinking coffee plus history of the drink starting in 1580 plus q&a. Second hour is walking around the 8-acre hillside at 3,000 feet elevation to see the cherries on the trees and the washing, drying, cleaning, sorting and roasting equipment. Tour concludes with (what else!) another cup of fresh brew. You'll leave Pomorrosa as well caffeinated as you like lol. Located up in the twisty hills served by PR-511 but a bridge is out so the obvious GPS route doesn't work. About 2 hours drive from San Juan: Autopista 52 south, to PR-10 North, to PR-143 East (narrow winding road!), to PR-511 again, and up the steep-steep entrance. Look for the orange, banana and cacao trees on your way in. Coffee geek history quiz: 1. What did Africans, discoverers of this wonderful plant, make from the cherry skin 400+ years ago? 2. Why did pope Clement gave his blessing to coffee about 1600? 3. Why did the English spurn coffee houses and choose tea? 4. What country drinks the most cups per capita today? 5. Which parts of the coffee tree have caffeine?

Delightful environment to enjoy mountain grown coffee.

Not just a coffee hacienda but also has small cabins for rent). We arrived at 4:30 p.m. On July 4th and were able to have three coffees each and an enjoyable conversation with the owners' son. We purchased ten and a half pounds of coffee between the three of us so that should give you an idea how much we liked the coffee. WARNING: We used yelp to find this place and it was way off. Use google and expect to lose service occasionally.

This is not just a bed and breakfast: it's also a coffee plantation! My mom and i secured a visit last minute because by chance i found reviews online and the owner sent me instructions on how to get to his Hacienda which were very helpful as we came up the mountain. You will be told it takes two hours from San Juan to here (and i drive fast) but the reality is more like 3 hours when you are not sure and you hesitate, etc. I was worried about this so we left early and luckily, were the first to arrive. No one arrived on time except us. This is the only "bad" part: Although the tour takes two hours, this is from start to end and does not include 1) waiting for the late comers to start the tour and 2) waiting for everyone who has arrived to use the one restroom 3) paying for visit/buying coffee; the larger the group the longer it takes. Therefore, you want to be smart, and allocate yourself one day to do this visit. We arrived at 11 am and left at 2:30.. After that, you have to drive down the mountain and by that time, you are hungry! So.. it's not a "bad" part if you were smart and planned well and assumed it would take almost all day.. I was not and therefore missed out on my afternoon activity because after the lunch we had it was almost 4:30 and then we had to head back towards Ponce.. which is another 45 minutes. *The owner will indicate a good address for you to have lunch at the bottom of the mountain! LISTEN to him! It's a great place with a great view. Some of the people in the group said they would go but did not.. and they missed out. Get good directions though because your GPS will not find it. Its easy though; once you descend the mountain, you take a right towards Adjuntas on route 10 (not left towards Ponce) and you drive a little under ten minutes and on the right hand side; you will see the restaurant on top of a hill.* Going back to the coffee visit: time was my only regret: i had expected the tour to be 2 hours in and out, and therefore that at the end of the tour i would descend down the mountain and do another visit i had planned, but this was not the case at all. it's partially my fault because in order to enjoy this place: you can't be in a rush anyway.. so i just had to say goodbye to my afternoon plan. As far as the visit itself and the coffee plantation: it's in a really gorgeous setting. We were greeted very warmly by a German man whom has been living in PR for 42 years and whom is passionate about coffee! He treated us to a special house brew (so good) in his cool outdoor kitchen with tiles imported from Mexico and as guests arrived, we mingled with people from everywhere which was quite fun and makes the experience cooler. Once everyone had arrived, we started the tour. The tour is composed in two parts: 1) information on the history of coffee 2) visit of the plantation and the process by which coffee is grown. In the end, we were treated to espresso and were able to pay for the tour ($15 pp) and buy coffee if we wanted -which of course everyone should do because 1) its good and 2) it helps the owner. The owner is a kind man whom has lived an interesting life, taken a risk and followed his passion! I highly recommend checking this place out when you are in PR for more than a couple days. It's definitely another world up in the lush mountains! :)

There are few people you meet in this world that charm you from the minute you meet them. Kurt the owner is one of those people, the stories in the tour range from the origins of coffee, to current world events to the most recent storm impacts. The coffee on top of this is fantastic and definitely worth the time and effort!! A certain must do on the island!!

A real Puerto Rican coffee place! You will be able to try several different types of coffee before and after their coffee tour. All are amazing! Totally worth the drive (through Ruta Panoramica).

Mountain grown coffee and a beautiful view.

Our…read moreguide, Carmelo, was spectacular - he was a wealth of knowledge, and long after we left, we kept talking about what we learned there, not only about the process of growing and processing coffee, but about Puerto Rico as a whole. I honestly won't look at coffee the same way again! Even my daughter and husband who don't drink coffee agreed that the samples we tasted were quite excellent - even without cream or sugar. The setting was breathtaking, and photos just won't do it justice, though I took many in an attempt to capture it accurately. Really lovely... Do not let the commentary on the roads to Sandra Farms deter you from going. We were in a sedan and it was fine, if a little bumpy in places. However, a word to the wise regarding driving there - first, download your Google maps before you leave WiFi service, because you will definitely go offline. Signage on roads is not always present (true throughout PR), and there are some forks in the road that aren't entirely clear. Second, people who live in this mountainous area (and there are many) are used to these roads, and often - as my mother used to say - take their half out of the middle. Drive slower than you think you should. The roads are narrow and feel more like 1 and 1/2 lanes, not 2 lanes. It is rare to find a line down the middle of these roads. There are often no guardrails, and sometimes not much of a shoulder. Our family had a great time squealing and laughing as my husband braved the many hairpin turns - it is definiely do-able, but just don't try to speed your way there. We got a cute t-shirt that said we survived the road to Sandra Farms, proving that it is just as noteworthy as any other attraction! Finally, these are the most gracious hosts - we were running late, because of a wrong turn, and they were so kind and patient. They made us all feel like we were friends that hadn't been able to visit in a long time. I definitely intend to return one day, and will be supporting their coffee production from home via their website. Te quiero Sandra Farms!

I think that says a lot about how much we enjoyed this lol. The drive to the farm was beautiful. Yes the last 15-30 minutes are a little rough and narrow. The views are stunning once you arrive. Tal (likely spelling her name wrong, so sorry!) was a sweetheart during the tour! I learned about the coffee making process, how much effort it takes to be an organic farm and to truly appreciate that cup of espresso. I'm unsure about other farms but all the coffee beans here are harvested by hand! After we did a very brief walk to the coffee plants, we went to try some freshly brewed coffee. Roasted the regular and natural way, with delicious chocolate and banana biscotti treats as well. We also loved all the fruit trees we saw, even star apples! Israel was kind enough to let us pick the fruit we wanted!

The views from this place are incredible! The decor, the plants and vegetation and the paintings were probably my favorite thing about Cafe Nativo. I wish I took more pictures ! The food was pretty good, I ordered a waffle with a side of bacon and asked for my tostada to come out before the food. The portions were small and the side of bacon only came with 2 pieces. My cousins dish is pictured, she ordered a sandwich con plátano fries. I've never had plátano fries until then and they were bomb! I asked for my own side of them with mayoketchup. They never came. My uncle ordered the hummus however none of this were pleased with it. There is one ingredient they don't include ( I think it's the tahini) so the consistency wasn't like typical hummus. I didn't give 5 stars because of the service. The service was painfully slow. I had to ask for my drink more than 3 times. We waited about 20 minutes in the heat for our check. Again having to ask different employees multiple times, it was ridiculous. Also the bathroom situation. There are 2 stalls in an outhouse type of thing. So waiting for the bathroom could mean you're waiting outside in the hot sun or in the rain. Yay!

Launching from La Guancha, the dock was easy to get to and there was plenty of parking. For $28 roundtrip (as of 12/16), it was a value excursion! On this uninhabited island, there are no stores or vendors. Bring your own food, drinks, and beach comfort items. The ferry does sell drinks, some alcoholic beverages, snacks, and food (hot dogs and kebabs). You have to preorder the food in the morning and they'll cook it up fresh while you go play on the island, serving lunch at noon. For $60, you get roundtrip transportation and twelve meal and drink tickets (two tickets for food items, one ticket for snacks and drinks, including beer). The prices onboard are actually quite reasonable, so the meal tickets really aren't that much of a deal, in my opinion. You can also rent beach chairs and snorkeling gear from Island Ventures at very affordable prices. On this gorgeous island, we wanted to do it all! We wanted to hike to the lighthouse, explore the caves, play at the beach...everything! But we somehow couldn't get away from the water. We played at the beach, snorkeled, and then beached again. Snorkeling gear was only ten bucks to rent (as of 12/16), but because I can't swim and needed a life vest, I paid another two bucks for the whole shebang. While we were close to coral along the shore, it wasn't the best snorkeling environment. Not a lot of wildlife around all those human types that lined the shores. There were many fish under the dock, so we carefully explored that area. The water is a brilliant turquoise, but not very clear (it wasn't dirty, it just wasn't crystal clear), so it was often times difficult to see, even from a short distance away. Ferry leaves La Guancha at 8:30 AM on the dot, so get there early to check in and grab a seat. The forty-five minute ride each way is pretty smooth. Ferry leaves the island at 3:30 PM.
