After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Yelp to the rescue!…read more We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

Thanks, Adam! Wandering the streets after sightseeing, I let Yelp lead me to a top rated…read morerestaurant. I was not even slightly disappointed because Akbar's is an excellent curry house. Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange - a solidly laminated sheet - but it had all the usual curries that I've come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I've never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all "livery", three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!

Akbars - Family sized garlic naan. Enough for the family alright, or the family could use these bad boys for curtains.

Ahhh The Bombay... or Th Bo bay as the sign currently reads…read more It's quite a small restaurant with a function room on the first floor which will seat a group of about 40. I hadn't been here for a couple of years and recently took a date there in February. I looked forward it's cosy, little candle lit booths and was disappointed to see that they had redesigned the interior to a more contemporary looking restaurant. It looks nice but I think it's lost it's romantic, authentic Indian atmosphere. I wasn't enamoured with the service either to be honest. The waiters weren't rude but they didn't seem very interested in good service. On the plus side the food is great! Delicious and a wide choice on the menu. I thought the price was ok too: free poppadums with dips, 2 x mains and a couple of sides with drinks was about £40. If you're looking for good Indian food and are going with a friend who isn't looking for great service, then I would definately recommend giving it a go for the good food.

Do not under any account go to this restaurant if you like a curry after 12 pints of lager. Don't…read morego if your idea of Indian food is eye wateringly hot chicken phal, nor if you like blood red Tikka Massala. This is, to its loyal and discerning followers, by a considerable distance the best Indian food that you will find in Leicester. Family run, by a gujarati family displaced from Kenya more than 30 years ago, it conforms to the highest standards. I have been going there for 15 years and can say, with total honesty, that I have never had a bad meal. With the wonderfully courteous Dinesh looking after the 40 cover restaurant, which has been recently fully refurbished, and brother Ashok masterminding the cooking, a visit is more akin to a visit to an exclusive dining club than your regular curry house. Meat, fish and vegetarian options are imaginatively and stylishly prepared and served, and Ashok will happily cook to order if your particular favourite is not on the extensive menu. This place does not get awards, or feature in guides because it doesn't need to. The do not need to solicit cheap publicity. Beloved by Leicester's Indian and English communities alike, it is a good idea to book because it can be packed - and not always only on Friday and Saturday. I cannot recommend highly enough, because if you want a truly high quality meal (not the cheapest, but that should not be an issue) then this is the one. With starters, sweets and a few beers, it can run to thirty or forty pounds a head. But it is money well spent.

The service was appalling, staff indifferent, rude and bordering on aggressive, food was cold, bland and largely inedible, very poor standard of decor and hygiene, generally dirty, food on floor, crumbs on seats, filthy, smelly toilets and generally unpleasant. Insulting. I am so cross - we should have walked out. My husband and I and a couple of friends booked a week in advance for 8pm on a Saturday night. No meet and greet on arrival, in fact no acknowledgement of our arrival at all ... we were met will indifference / rudeness when we asked to be shown to our table. There was no apology that our table was not ready - they were quite obviously over-booked and running behind, though there was no sense of urgency or stress on their part. We were kept standing in 'reception' (which resembled some grubby, inner city taxi office) for 25 mins without anyone offering an apology, a drink or an update as to when our table might be ready. Eventually, after several enquiries on our part, we were shown to our grubby little table next to a grubby pillar, squashed in between two other longer, grubby tables. No welcome was offered, no apology for the delay, no offer of a drink. Menus eventually arrived. After 20 mins our order was taken by a very grumpy waiter and we 'managed' to get a drink. 30 mins later our starters arrived. Very disappointing - poorly presented. Tasteless. An hour later our mains arrived - we were starving - we should have walked out, but we didn't. Again, the mains were poorly presented ... stained plates, battered serving dishes thrown on the table by another grumpy waiter, the food was bland, cold and greasy. Currys were generally tasteless, meat was grisly and virtually inedible. Don't go. I'm so mad - what a waste of hard-earned money. Don't go - you'll hate it. I wish I'd stayed at home and got a takeout from our lovely little, and reliably-good local 'Akash' Indian restaurant in Navenby. Go there - the service and currys are in a different league! The Royal Tandoori is an insult to the many other lovely Indian restaurants and Indian takeaways in the area. Don't go. Don't anyone go
