I have had a family membership there since 1997 or 1998, the rates have been reasonable. Our membership lapsed for a couple of months. I went in today to renew our family membership and they charged me $100 for initiation fees, they would not wave the initiation fees even though I had been a member for nearly 20 years. Just a word of warning, they don't seem to have any appreciation for long term customers or people who live local and support the local business.

The guy showing me around didn't say anything. Made me hesitant to go back until a month later since it's near where I live. Reception here is very weak, most of the time I do not have a signal. There is a trail nearby which is nice. Also an outdoor basketball court and bar gym. The equipment is in good shape. The bathrooms are clean. Front desk employees always greet me with a smile. But that one experience with racists is something I just can't brush off. I wish the staff member would have addressed it.

The lady at the registration desk was so friendly and helpful. She completed my paperwork in a timely fashion so I could get to the workout class on time. I was immediately greeted by the instructors. I went to two classes and I was greeted the same way in both classes. My fellow work out partners were friendly and helpful as well. I stopped at the desk to ask about lap swimming and classes for the following two day. This attendant highlighted classes that she thought I might be interested in attending.

While soaking in front of a huge glass window in the hot tub, you can actually see the bald eagles nesting in the trees on the other side of the Illinois River! But that's about it. The place is being run by idiots, all on the city payroll -- usually guys wearing tight body shirts who spend most of their time working out on the machines while giving scant attention to the "problems" all around them. The workout machine area overlooking all of this is virtually deserted with no supervision and no customers, particularly in the evening hours after work (one has to wonder why?). This encourages pilfering and chronic theft in the locker areas, among other things. Then a white school bus arrives and unloads various people on a hot summer day, who stand around talking to each other in the Olympic-size pool, thus preventing anyone from swimming laps until after they and their white bus leave two hours later. If one tries to complain, a guy in a tight body shirt comes over to tell you your behavior is not acceptable. Meanwhile, the people off the bus could be drowning from no supervision for all he knows because, up to then, he and his "crew" are busy talking to various types about tomorrow's big game at the events center! It is a big political operation to keep everyone happy during the summer heat and the drop-dead months of cold winter, so they will not throw rocks or steal hubcaps (as well as cars parked nearby) due to the lack of personal safety on the streets around the place --which has been funded by tax monies -- that is from those who pay taxes. Somebody made a lot of money building this place. Then they use it to stick it to the taxpaying citizens to keep some people "happy" who are "needy" and unhappy for whatever reasons. But watch for Mr. Body T. Shirt to run for mayor next time around, since he knows how to make the big shots with the real money happy.

After several months of harassment by another member, we escalated…read morethe case to the building level management who informed us they had no instrument at their disposal to enforce the code of conduct they expect of their members, and that we should just ignore the intimidation of the other member. We hate to leave this place, particularly because of the relationships that we have formed with so many good people here, but the dereliction of the duty of care by management is just unacceptable and morally questionable. I hate to say it, but you'd be safer going somewhere that values member safety over money.

My 80 yr old mother has been going here since 1989, today she didn't reserve a lane ( not computer…read moresavy) and even though there was a free lane, was not permitted to swim...I called to inquire about name of app I've helped her reserve in the past( was on her old phone) mind body....young woman at desk said she didn't know, I responded " well that's not good", she replied," why u coming at me like that at the end of the day?" I said I do not care, (mainly because I'm about to have my left foot amputated in a week and will not be able to figure this out for my mom)....anyway she proceeded to say " then f*ck you, f'n ,f'r.. to which I calmly said ya done b* tch...unbelievable!

I love LandmarkRec as a health club. I have had great experiences with the personal trainers who…read moretook a lot of time to make personalized routines for me. My trainer also went out of his way to research a condition I have that is similar to scoliosis and that taught me about the muscle groups affected by the condition. I also enjoyed the fitness classes, I attended yoga weekly. It doesn't feel like a professional yoga studio, and I mean that in a good way. The classes are small and therefore personal and there is no pressure if you are a beginner and can't do some of the poses. The pricing is really good compared to Riverplex and the YMCA. I focused more on the student rates so I can't speak much to the full membership prices. I do know that landmark has great options such as early hours only, evening hours only, and weekend only for reduced prices. Only downside is that the pool is smaller than the standard 25m. YMCA and Riverplex both have full size pools. However, Landmark's pool is not busy and you actually reserve it so that its never crowded. landmarkrec.com

Review Visit: October 22nd, 2014…read more Clearwater Park should also be called Spacious Park. Clearwater Park is one of many city parks in Bloomington-Normal. The city has literally 7+ parks, if I am seeing this map right. But what sets this one apart from the others? Space. This park is relatively bigger than a standard park. It has basketball courts, a volleyball sand pit area, a playground, a gazebo for parties and openness. I didn't spend a whole lot of time here, but I enjoyed every second of it. The leaves were changing colors, the weather was just right. It was a nice visit. I just enjoy the openness of this park. If you find yourself in Bloomington, there are quiet a few nice parks to visit. McGraw Park and Holiday Park are two you should definitely check out, if you have kids and they love parks... or if you are a kid at heart like myself.

This park is awesome…read more The park has a paved walking trail that goes around the outside of the park. It is half a mile in distance. Perfect for walking or running exercise. The park has basketball hoops, volleyball court, and a wonderful playground. My kids love this park. There is also a covered area next to the playground with picnic tables, which is a great place to enjoy a group meal.

The SRFC is OK, but not much more - and here is why. Let's skip the fact that the place is a bit…read morerundown and could use (a lot of) renovation, but as the price is acceptable I don't mind the mid 70's - almost nostalgic - ambiance. They have functioning racquetball courts - which is one of my main reasons for coming. The SRFC also has some very fine instructors that will do their very best for you. The one thing that gets me is SRFC's lack of organization and professionalism. Recently I've gone to do some classes that are on their schedule, only to find that there is no instructor or trainer to give them. I then noticed that they announce their schedules in three places: online, in flyers, and in weekly sheets. The problem is that these three sources do not agree. IN SHORT: I have recently gone 5 times or so, changed into my outfit etc, only to find that I just had wasted another 14 miles on my car and another hour of my time. I have brought this to management's attention, and I even asked the desk people specifically the day before if the schedule was correct. But all this was to no avail as nobody seems to know what exactly is going on and when ... So, before becoming an SRFC member, ask yourself why you'd would want to put up with such nonsense. Review Visit: October 11th, 2014…read more Another park visited in Bloomington! This was one of a few parks my dad and I visited while in Bloomington. In fact, I have written many blogs on them as of late. So if you are tired of seeing Park blogs, I am almost done for awhile. Anyways, on to the park! This one is a bit more ambitious than your standard park. It has a football field and a basketball court. May be the first park I've been to that has a football field. Then it has your typical playground and some covered areas for grilling/cooking out. There are some large open fields to wander and feel at peace. Overall, it was a decent park. There was a section of some fake grass/cement that needed repair (as seen below). Not sure what was up with that. I do remember the wide open fields were nice. It's not the best park Bloomington-Normal has, but it's not the worst. Definitely check it out if you are in the area and need to wear your kids out.
