Set up…read moreby the talented Jake 1 (otherwise known as Jake Holmes) this gallery space houses a collection of graphic artists, designers and painters who have all graduated from art school in the last few years and are looking to develop their work in a gallery setting. The space is an old shed in the city - well 'shed' as in formally a garage, but now it has been made over to house the studio spaces as well as a deceptively large exhibition area. Keep your eyes on this one folks; they may even be getting some performance art productions from well known blogging writer and actor David Jobling. Yes, it's true. I attended the opening night shin dig at Tooth and Nail and I must say it was a most interesting crowd of individuals who have all clearly got a lot going for them besides their youth and good looks. The art work is a lot of fun (I took a lot of photos so check them out) and it challenges as well as amuses, so get along and check out their work. There are also screen printing services and general printing and graphic design services available so if you are looking for that unusual fresh new look for your business, here is certainly one place worth visiting to find out which of these artists will provide you with a custom made look at a decent price for all. The art mostly all comes from local artists, and varies from canvas paintings, to screen prints, to wood paints and hand drawn pieces. All of it's on sale and you can grab the price list on the way in if you're inclined to collect. One cool thing about this art gallery (and perhaps a smart move economically speaking) is that the area that isn't used for exhibiting new work is rented out to artists to make more art. When I went in there were a few folks beetling away upstairs on their work, and was a sweet novelty to be checking out great art while more of it's being made just metres away from you. There's no official opening hours for Tooth and Nail but I was told there's normally someone working away somewhere indoors and they keep the place open. My advice would be to head in the late morning or afternoon to catch it open.

The gallery is open during working hours from Wednesday to Sunday, as well as after hours for specific exhibitions. They organise monthly events and viewings, as well as getting involved with art festivals like SALA. Entry to see the work of local artists is free, so it's a great chance to get up close to original pieces of art, to either just appreciate or also to buy. Their website is comprehensive and the best way to stay informed of what's happening at the gallery. They list dates for the regular art and wine nights, as well as showing all their artists' profiles and work. A great way to finish a dinner out in town is buy a glass of wine then wander through the gallery and see what some of our local artists have been up to.

Art Images Gallery is situated on the lower end of The Parade, close to the city. Currently on show at Art Images Gallery until Christmas is an epic group show of almost 50 artists of varying styles, backgrounds and competencies. A mixture of painting, sculpture and object based work is on show, nothing outstanding though. I did quite like the paper cut work by Linda Marek which although cute, was well executed and interesting. JoJo Spook also had some interesting abstracted figurative sculptural work constructed from a variety of objects, including something which resembled a baking rack and other kitchen utensils. The works had a primitive tribal feel, and were and interesting application of the mundane media used to implement the work. There were several pieces which were at best kitsch and at worst woefull, although I won't name names. However, the variety of work on show makes it well worth checking out.

They stock those discount book and gift box sets you see everywhere which make great present to store in the gift box for when you're invited to something with little notice. There is a really good selection of wedding invitation stationery and lots for arts and crafts. I'm not certain, but when Angus and Robertson went into receivership, it became Dillon's bookshop. One can only assume the bookstore at the end of the mall on The Parade are run by the same crew.

Dillon's stacks up pretty well in a city where it is notoriously hard to track down niche titles. They've got all the main(stream) suspects and a couple of surprises thrown in: I managed to uncover a Danish fashion mag, Stella, the other day which I haven't seen anywhere else. Alas, with no Borders and no Mag Nation (...yet), I still head online for a lot of my magazine purchases, but for everyday titles and a few imports like UK Elle and Vogue it's very much worth a visit. That out of the way, Dillon's also has an impressive range of gift ware: from V&A gift cards to Christmas trinkets galore, Moleskine diaries and scented candles, it's a pleasant mishmash and a go-to for all my last minute pressie runs. The craft and stationery section is also stocked, it's overpriced in my view but there is a huge selection. The staff are always friendly and plentiful.

I didn't personally have much to do with the sales rep in the store, but as I was browsing the many gorgeous pictures I overheard another lady asking for assistance and the guy at the counter seemed more than happy to help her out with whatever she needed.

Sally's Seconds is attached to the Salvation Army next door (get it... "Sally's"?) and is jam-packed with all manner of clothing, toys and bric a brac. Because it's kind of tucked away and unassuming looking, Sally's can often be overlooked by bargain hunters and thrift lovers, but don't make the same mistake! I've found some amazing (and super cheap) stuff in here. On my last visit I scored a brand new kookai top for $5, an amazing retro set of '70s tumblers for $8, a lovely tin with geometric designs for $2 and I was tempted to take home "The Bill" board game for $2 but somehow resisted. Being in Norwood, the stock is generally of high quality and good brands, and I find it's rotated quite quickly as well, so you can come in for a weekly browse and find something new. The lovely ladies behind the counter are always a pleasure too!

Right in the middle of Norwood you would think that there would be a bunch of stock and some really good finds. I would say that Norwood is more of the upper-middle class area, so generally thrift stores in these areas have great gear to get your hands on. But, this one is just lacking in a lot of areas. This thrift store is small and separated into three rooms. I could see a large storage area at the back, maybe this is a staff area? Shame they do not use the space to expand the store. There was minimal clothing, books, crockery, etc... The staff also did not welcome me in the store like they do in the other Salvos stores. Such a let down and something that I like about their stores. Good customer services and generally helpful in most of them. Oh well... maybe I caught the staff on a bad day. But, I probably will not be back.

I love walking past Framingland. It's not hard for me to find a print that I love. They have such a…read morewide range of prints such as; Disney, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Johnny Depp and many other hollywood icons. They also sell artistic prints. Is that what you call them? I'm not even sure, I just look at the celebrity range. Does that make me shallow? Who cares. I remember I purchased a few posters from a different store interstate and I wanted them laminated so I wouldn't ruin them, so I brought them to framingland and they were happy to do it for me and it wasn't too expensive either. They sell beautiful frames as well.
