We rented two (two person) jet skis for a half day (4 hours) at a reasonable price and had a blast!…read moreUnfortunately we came an hour late, but 3 hours was plenty to have fun on the lake. When we arrived, they were quick to help us with paperwork and getting us right on the jetskis. There was a $1000 deposit (!!!) per jet ski, because we were going as a group, and this makes accidents more likely, which we were a little leery of, but we didn't damage the jet skis and got our deposit slips back in the end with no issues. The girl helping us was friendly and briefly went over how to operate the jet skis and where to avoid, etc. We had a great time on the lake, and went for many dips in the clear, cool water. The jet skis seemed pretty new, and had a small watertight compartment and a larger compartment that was not watertight. They're really easy to operate. When we came back, we did have to wait a while in the heat to get checked out and pay for gas, because there was only one person manning the dock. This wasn't really an issue for us as we were in no rush. I would highly recommend renting jet skis from here.

It was super luxe with an awesome sound system, a canopy for shade, plenty of storage and tons of room for everyone to sit. They don't call it the minivan of the boating world for nothing! Lol The team that set us up was great and they took their time orienting us to the boat. Adding on the SEA BEAST took the adventure up a level and the kids had a blast being pulled behind the boat. We lucked out with beautiful weather the water was amazing. The lake was warmer than the ocean, clear and refreshing. Even though my husband thought leaving our beach vacation for a day on the lake was nuts-- he thanked me later. We can't wait come rent a boat again!

Anyway, my first visit was during a quiet midweek day when this was mostly a fishing hole. The Songo Lock - a hand turned swing bridge - is the last surviving lock that used to connect Long Lake to the Atlantic Ocean (via the Cumberland and Oxford Canal). According to the placard on site: "This lock, originally built of stone masonry in 1830, was a vital link in the 50 mile long waterway from Portland Harbor to Harrison at the head of Long Lake until the advent of the railroad in 1869. At one time 100 'canal boats' were engaged in freighting lumber out of and supplies in through the waterway. These boats were 65' long and were towed by horses and oxen through the canal, sailed across the lakes and poled up the Songo River. A total of 27 similar locks were constructed in the canal to compensate for the 260 foot difference in elevation between Sebago Lake and sea level. Traces of the old canal, abandoned since 1872, can still be seen at various places between Sebago Lake and Portland. This lock remains as service to pleasure boats and a reminder of a bygone era."

You go into the lock and the water either rises or lowers depending on what way you are going. I honestly never saw anything like this before. Even if you are not on a boat it is still something different and unique to see.
