Hannah was full of knowledge about the river and the surrounding area, as well as being a skilled river guide with 4 years of experience with this rafting company. All of the staff were pretty chill and everyone had a memorable and safe trip down the Rapid. All of this without a 4+/- hour ride up into whoknowswhere Maine. BONUS: to finish the run with a slow pontoon boat ride back to base camp was the perfect way to end a great afternoon. We stored our bags with the kind folks manning the station -- they were all SO friendly and they even had a lil puppy chillin with them. Our guide was Harry and he was AMAZING!! He helped gear us up, put us through a mini safety/how to lesson, and took us out! As someone who's never kayaked on the ocean, I felt extremely ready with Harry at the helm! He was super knowledgeable of history, the boats, the wildlife, and the marina. He was so fun to yap with and patient with our shenanigans and jokes on the water hehehe. We saw many beautiful boats, including historical reenactment sailboats, sea birds, Osprey and their nests, and talked to some locals on the water. Harry said it was the windiest he's seen all summer when we were paddling back - be prepared to get a good workout in!! It was sunny out so no need for thick garments- even the water didn't feel icy cold like I expected. None of us tipped but even if we did, we would've been safe in this weather. For people's reference if you're wondering what to wear: Swimsuit, leggings (shorts would've been fine on a day like this), water wicking long sleeve top, hat, sunglasses, Tevas. The boat was in great condition, lifejackets were new, and the location of the shop was great for exploring and putting in. One thing to note, they apparently have spots on the lake that you can rent to camp at? Rafting was a normal experience with fun water currents and a fun ride. But after rafting, you're…read moregiven an option to go tubing for free, me and my family decided to go tubing down the river which we had to walk down the pathway which was fine. Once we got into the water with no instructor, the only instructions we were given was to follow the same path we took for rafting and swish towards the right after the bridge. We also were told not to get out of our tube. The experience was normal, but nothing really special, when we were tubing once we passed the bridge we tried to steer right, but nothing was happening due to the strong currents. When we were approaching the time where we're supposed to get out of the tube nothing changed. This led to me and my family having to evacuate our tubes and caused us to hit our feet on the shallow sharp rocks in the waters. It was painful and I don't recommend to anyone. We had to get out of our tubes, drag our tubes with us to the shore while hitting sharp rocks and it was not fun. Overall, the rafting was normal and expected, but the tubing was not fun and I recommended they have an instructor or staff help navigate the strong dangerous waters to prevent any accidents.

A bus will bring you to the drop off point. The river is very slow and had to apply some effort at points to keep moving. There are various sections along the river to stop at. There are two rope swings available downstream of the river. Definitely enjoyable with two hours being more than enough time.

We've gone down the river a few different times with this tube rental group. Each time has been a…read moresuccess. The first few times we had large groups of people with us, all meeting up to go down the river together. They accommodated us the best they could and we did the rest. You can rent tubes, cooler tubes, dog tubes, kayaks, canoes and more. They provide you with a life jacket and ticket time to be ready for your shuttle. They then shuttle you to a drop off location along the mighty Saco River. They transport you, your tube, and all your belongings right to the drop off. You can choose the length of your trip upon purchase. There is a one mile, three mile, and five mile trip down river. You can choose to repeat the trip, as long as there is time before they close for you to do so. They open early, like 8 am and close at 5 pm. The river is beautiful, and varies in depth throughout the trip. There's plenty of beaches to stop and enjoy a packed lunch or a snack. Please stay off of any beach that says "private" as they are not part of the rental companies lands. There's a couple of rope swings to stop at, but remember, you're stopping with no liability on the rental company. They are not liable for much on these trips. You sign paperwork ahead of time, stating such. Their booth has some items you may need for the trip down river, such as waterproof bags, dry bags, phone bags, goggles, paddles, sunblock, sunglasses and more, of course all priced slightly up. I really enjoy renting and tubing with this company, they've got it down after all these years. Definitely a really fun thing to do during a hot summer day.

Ok, so I'm by NO means a campground person. Over the years I've actively avoided them, opting for…read morestate parks without RV's out of fear of landing in a trailer park instead of a campground full of residents rather than guests. This year I was convinced to join another couple families for their yearly trip to On the Saco Campground and I'm glad I did. It's not a huge place, but it's very well kept and VERY clean. No smelly outhouses or grimy bathrooms, both were maybe a little rustic but in good working order and again, very clean. My site was tree lined giving plenty of privacy, nicely mowed and had a fire ring. I don't know if they employ some kind of mosquito management but for a wooded site about 80ft from water, I didn't get one bite over my 3 night stay. There's a little store with pretty much any essential you may have forgotten for sale, small game room, washer/dryer, and dishwashing area. You can rent tubes and canoes, (I did both) and the staff is super friendly and helpful, (especially when we got caught in the rain and they came to pick us up earlier and at a different location than intended). They had some kind of activity everyday, I saw face painting one afternoon by the office, there was a glow stick parade one night, corn-hole tournament the next, and a movie night the third. A lot of Saco campground are shitshows, (I'm talking about you Fiddlehead!) full of wasted college kids, this place IS NOT THAT. If that's what you want, keep moving. However, if you're looking for a clean, friendly place that is definitely family friendly and a more peaceful but still fun experience I'd recommend On the Saco Family Campground for sure.
