There is a large parking lot for residents in the Harriman vicinity and surrounding counties. This station has signs of MTA Metro-North Railroad and logo but the trains that stop here is actually NJ Transit which operates on time. There are self-service ticket machines that function 24/7. There is also a small indoor heated sheltered waiting area which is useful during inclement extreme cold and rainy weather. Not sure if there are any facilities at this rail station.

There is a large seating area and vending machines for purchases. During the day there are many people going in and out of this location. During the fall it is much busier. Everyone wants to go over the bridge and see the fall panoramic views. There is a bus stop outside with people waiting to go to local stops. There are free buses which go to Poughkeepsie, Marist, New Paltz, and other locations. The free buses only come a couple times per day so make sure to time everything accordingly. At night the station is mostly empty. There are several homeless people who stay outside. After nine the seating area is closed so you have to wait outside. The trains do run until 1 am. If you miss out on the last train you have to wait until the morning for your next trip. I would have liked longer hours here but it is what it is. I will continue stopping by here when I visit Poughkeepsie.

I was appalled to see the elevator out of order at an Amtrak hub. How does that make sense when you know many people traveling on Amtrak are burdened with luggage. Add that to the fact that we just had a blizzard and navigating by foot is difficult enough The station platform was well salted, but there was nobody in sight to help the elderly with their bags. I was struggling myself with two suitcases and shopping bags from my visit to New York City. The only way from the platform to the station is up a flight of approximately 30 steps nearly straight up. Once to the top, you have to balance your suitcases so that you can pull the doors open by hand. It's regrettable that this station could be so spectacular. It was built at the turn of the 20th century I believe and could be a masterpiece. Instead, it looks like a didn't she, grungy throwback to the 70s. No place to buy a cup of coffee, no employees in sight, police are stationed outside, but there's nothing there but sad tired people This is really a shame because I love Amtrak and Amtrak should really raise their voice about how passengers are being treated at this station. On the train it was funny to see them punch our tickets, it was so old-school. The conductor was very friendly and the train was quite clean. Overall a good experience. My only disappointment was on the ride home, some kids snuck on the train and sat in a couple open seats where tickets had already been punched. They only rode for a couple of stops, but it was still quite dishonest. I feel like there should be a protocol for riders to take their tickets as they leave to keep this from being able to occur.

The station has no ticket agent window, you must buy your ticket from the one NJT vending machine located outside the main entrance or you can purchase your ticket via NJT app on your smartphone. The two NJT routes this station serves are the Montclair-Boonton line and the Morris & Essex line. The station is kept in decent condition and clean. It's not anything fancy and it has been over 15 years since they did their last renovation, but it serves its purpose of saving you from driving that commute to the City!

I could see it traveling farther and farther out when I looked on his Device Manager until I realized it was still on the train when it stopped in Dover. It was after business hours so I didn't know if there would be anyone there who could help. We'd already contacted lost and found. So I drove out there hoping to find someone. I drove to the deserted train yard. Knocked on some doors but nope, nobody there. Got back in my car and drove around a bit more until I saw someone about to leave in one of those small security vehicles. The only person in the area. He stopped and I told him what train he'd been on and that I saw it wasn't going out again that night and asked if there was a way to look on the train. He said he'd go up to see what track it was on and would go through the train but when he came down he had my son's phone! I'm forever grateful to this lovely man! The architecture, the details, the famous ceiling and the constant movement of people make the entire place feel like a movie set. I honestly loved just walking around and taking everything in. It was freezing, or maybe it was warm, maybe it was my cold, but it felt cold as hell anyway because who the hell wants to be awake when the sun isn't even trying yet? ​So I walk all the way over to Lexington Ave and 42nd Street which is a hell of a walk when you're half asleep and your feet feel like two sacks of wet sand, just to get to Grand Central and catch the 6:18 AM train to Scarsdale. I have this part-time paralegal job up there. It depresses the hell out of me, strictly speaking, but a person's got to keep a job or people start looking at you like you're a total crook or crackhead or something. ​Grand Central at six in the morning is actually pretty grand, if you want to know the truth. It really is. It's not full of all these phony tourists snapping pictures of every single thing like they've never seen a ceiling before. The main concourse is just vast and quiet, with that big greenish ceiling with all the stars painted on it, even though the stars are drawn totally backward, which is just like people, if you think about it. Nobody even notices. ​There's that big clock right in the middle sitting on top of the information booth. It just sits there, looking very old and very expensive and not giving a damn about anybody's problems. I stood there for a second looking up at it, and for a minute it almost made me feel less miserable about going all the way to Scarsdale to look at legal briefs or whatever the hell I was going to do. ​The guys working the tracks at that hour don't yell at you, which is a nice change. You just walk down the ramp to your track, get on the Metro-North, and sit by the window. It's almost nice, except you know as soon as the train starts moving that you're actually on your way to work, which ruins the whole thing. ​If you have to go to work at six in the morning, Grand Central is about the only place in New York that doesn't make you feel like a complete loser for doing it. I mean it. It really doesn't. ​
