Interesting history here, being one of the oldest surviving gates of Florence, it dates back to 1285, the year in which they began the sixth circle of walls around the city.
The door is named dall'antistante square called Il Prato, or square of Porta al Prato. It is not named by the fact that it starts a road that also leads to Prato.
In ancient times this area was not paved and kept that way for the weekly cattle market.
