The office shares a parking lot with La Peep restaurant, which is really nice if you want to have a meal and then head over to the office. Upon arriving, there are notices on the door that food and drink is not allowed-- this is strictly enforced as several people tried to enter with drinks and were sent out. Once inside there is an electronic kiosk where you can sign in if you have an appointment or can pick stand by and it prints out a ticket with a number. You're called by number and there's a screen to let you know what number they are on in case you're not paying attention (most people weren't haha) The process was smooth and efficient and the office was clean and had comfortable chairs.

With your library card you also get a limited membership to Hoopla and Kanopy, for digital resources. There is an automatic renewal if no one has reserved the item and a generous grace period.

With that being said, it's disappointing that the staff often moves at such a slow speed regardless of the number of people in line. Without exaggeration, I've seen lines of customers out the door on several occasions, with no apparent reaction or sense of urgency on the employees' part. This location has an automatic postal machine (APC), which I'm sure was installed to help alleviate customer wait times, but this location really could stand to have two APC machines. It seems that many customers not wanting to wait in the long lines trickle over to the APC, and it further seems that a good percentage of those customers have never used one before, which makes the "efficiency" of the APC a moot point when you're waiting for slow employees AND slow first-time APC users. My bottom line recommendation is that if you must mail something here, come after-hours (this location is open 24 hours) and use the APC. You'll get a lot more done, a heck of a lot faster.

I like to visit libraries…read morewhen I'm visiting a new-to-me town, so it was fortuitous that I happened to need to use the john at the same time that I saw the Valparaiso Public Library in the distance. I'm happy to report that the restrooms are clean! And the restrooms are close to the entrance! (Whew!) But more importantly, this library has books. And movies! And magazines! (Remember those?) And it has nice places to lounge and read or work. I posted up at one of those nice places for a while with my laptop, in a quiet nook off in the corner with barstool seating. This particular nook had big windows and plants on the windowsill, which was nice. I was able to connect to the free wifi, and plug my laptop into the library electrical juice. The second floor is mostly the children's floor, but there's also a genealogy center up there, too. The children's / youth area has some fun things to play with, plus computers, games, and, of course, children's and YA books. It's a cozy little place just for kids. This library isn't huge, and it's probably due for an update, but it's a great little library right in downtown Valpo.

Although all the staff were busy, the bright colors in the stairwell made it easy to see the way to the kids' area. Upstairs, there are tons of books, toys, and even a craft station. When we visited, the craft was decorating crayons. The crayons from other kids adorned the walls, and it was so cool to be able to leave our mark while we were traveling from Michigan. We loved all the toys in the play kitchen, but I felt guilty that my son was over there because it was right next to the reading area. So, as other parents were quietly reading to their kids, my little guy was whipping up a 5 course meal with plastic food and utensils. He loved it so much that I couldn't pull him away, so I wish it was a little more separated from the quiet area so kids in both spots can get the most out of their experiences. There are restrooms right next to the play area and an elevator in addition to the stairs. Overall, a great place to hang out with littles on a hot day!

Just walk in and see what they have on display. I literally just walked in off the street after shuffling around downtown Valpo. I didn't even know that this museum existed until I came upon it randomly. This is the area's oldest museum dedicated to the history and culture of Porter County, so you're seeing local art and history at its finest here. There are three different rooms in this museum that have interesting things to look at. Some of the exhibits have multimedia aspects to them, and some are just a collection of objects on display. I was in this museum for maybe 15 minutes and saw all of it that I needed to. But if you're one of those people who likes to read everything and talk to the people at the front desk, then you might be here a little longer. Either way, the Porter County Museum should be a stop during your visit to Valparaiso.

She told me all about the fire that burned the courthouse. Her extra information helped me understand the photo exhibit more. They have a very lifelike taxidermy dog in one room. It's eyes are so real and follow you. It was the cherished pet of a little girl way back- I think the 20s. I think you should always stop in the local museum whenever you visit any new place. Even small towns like Valparaiso have a lot of history to share.
