However, you'd think having found out they would come back tell you the answer. As I said that if it was 21 days or less, then cook it medium, if over 28 days then cook blue. They took the decision to cook it medium rare. It turns out that the chef didn't know as he wasn't the one that placed the orders!!!! An experience chef should be able to tell. Moving swiftly on...... Starter: Smoked trout fillet, horseradish potato salad, beetroot - £5.50 - Very nice Main: 6oz Rump Steak, garlic butter, hand cut chips £13.25 - The thickest chips I've been served. There seemed to be two pieces of steak. One which was quite tender, and the other very tough and grisly. I washed it down with a Rioja, which I thought was 100% Tempranillo, but the bottle revealed that it was blended with Garnacha. This rather detracted from the taste, but you have work pass these things and force the wine down your throat. Would I return? Yes, and sample other fayre. Charming staff, and friendly. I did request a VAT receipt. It was only when I returned to the office and found that the VAT number was missing. I couldn't get hold of them until 15 minutes before opening time.

We started with a tapas plate to share, and it was superb. S. had a seafood pasta and I had pork belly, which was define, once you cut the rim of fat off. Tender and delicious. For lunch after touring Shrewsbury Abbey and the Castle, we stopped in for the cheese board--which consisted of smoked applewood, brie, stilton, mature cheddar, and a smoky cheddar, which grapes, crackers, and honeyed walnuts. Perfection. Wait staff was great--attentive, friendly, and prompt. One of the highlights of our short stay in Shrewsbury.

The bar serves pints of lager and pints of cider. There is a new world addition of glasses of wine. The Boathouse sits on the River Severn, which is the longest river in England. From the right perch you can spy people walking along the river or enjoying the plush fields of the park across the banks. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming. If you venture to the Midlands, then make a point of stopping here and taking in some old world charm with a glass of mulled wine or a pint.

It might not look anything special but The Crown is clean and comfortable and the staff and regulars are friendly. There isn't a particularly impressive selection of drinks on offer but those that they do serve are reasonably priced. In the winter there's a pool table where you can thrash your friends for fun and money and in the summer there's a lovely beer garden that overlooks the River Severn and the quarry making it a lovely place to chill out with friends over a few drinks. I'd recommend it more for summer drinking but even in the winter, you could find far worse places that The Crown to enjoy a drink or two.

And no automatic 12.5% service, a refreshing change from London, truly discretionary service charge!

The hotel is on the market place and looks up the high street so a great location and as shrewsbury has very few hotels its defiently worth a try. as i say it is new and i stayed there on the second night so they were very open to feed vack and improving my stay anyway they could.

The restaurant is up in the roof with original beams and the like, its not very big so booking is advisable. Food is mainly british in theme, I had a very nice pork loin dish on my last visit with root mash, very tasty.

The food on the menu appeared very appetising. Nothing could have been further from the truth. My starter, potted shrimp, was fair but nothing special and made with tinned shrimps. My main, a polenta and mozzarella tower, contained slices of mozzarella so thin and scant as to be effectively non-existent. The side dish of dauphinoise potatoes came in a ramikin the diameter of a thruppeny bit (which they charged £2.50 for). My wife's teriyaki tuna was bordering on inedible. Teriyaki sauce is naturally salty, yet the chef decided to add a good sized flourish of salt on top of the finished dish! The service was just that. A service, really. Nohing exceptional considering the cost of the meal. The wine was awfully good, though.

The food was of very high standards and was one of the best meals out I've had in a long time. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a place with a nice atmosphere and without the rowdiness of other diners, I will definitely be visiting on a regular basis. Well done to all staff working the evening of 15th Sept 2015, a big thumbs up xx PS to the people moaning, you obviously dine in Michelin starred restaurants or are very picky!!!!!!!

We waited around for several minutes until we were seen to. b) They had no record of our booking. Luckily they had a free table. c) We were seated, but although it was obvious we had a baby with us I still had to ask for a high chair. d) The waitress who seated us didn't offer to take drinks orders. e) Fifteen minutes later she came back to take our orders. I had to prompt her to ask us whether we would like some drinks. f) Another twenty minutes passed. I could see our drinks order waiting on the bar. It had been there for ten minutes. I had to ask another waitress to go and fetch it. g) We finally got our food an hour after arriving. My burger was quite average, unlike the price (£12). It was also well done, despite me asking for medium. The chips (or "frites", according to the menu) were standard average pub chips. h) We were given two dessert menus. One was for the Sunday roast, the other for the standard menu. The pudding I wanted was on both; on the Sunday roast menu it was £3 and on the other menu was £5.45. I was charged £5.45. The difference was taken away again when I pointed out that you can't charge almost double simply because an item is printed on a different piece of paper. I get the feeling that somebody has put a lot of money into this place, but they've ignored the basics, i.e. good, honest food and well trained staff. The chaos between the kitchen and front of house was obvious. All style and little substance, as another reviewer said. During our time there we noticed two other people making complaints. We didn't leave a tip and we won't be going back.

The place is a bit pricey, but still enjoyable. The 7oz fillet steak is very very expensive - £25.95. I think I'd want a matured age of greater than 28 days, and per closer to 35.... I am not sure of the age of this steak... I recommend, and would go again.... I found the manager very approachable. OK OK I was with someone who had eaten there many times.... :-)
