I took my mom on the one hour trail ride over Mother's Day weekend. It was a blast! I've been a multiple trail rides in the past & this one was by far the best. Mostly because of the care of the animals. The horse I rode, "Titanic" looked and seemed happy. Our guide was super sweet and knowledgeable about the area. He was a previous broncho rider! The one hour ride took us through the forest with 5 other guests. We even went through the creek a few times. Mounting and dismounting was safely executed. We signed up for a two hour trail ride. The trail goes by the reservoir and into the mountain. Our group had 8 adults and 2 children. The guides (wranglers) were so kind and helpful throughout. The horses love to snack on the oak leaves so it was harder for some to keep their horses from snacking. We wondered if we should do the one hour or two hour ride. The difference is how much pain you can take. Lol. Seriously your legs knees and butt will hurt more for first time riders. Recommended that you bring a water bottle and wears pants however not required as some had shorts with no issues. These horses are loved and this is a wonderful stable with great employees. read more

My family and I HIGHLY recommend Porter Mountain Stables! We had gone here a couple of years ago with our extended family for a horseback ride through the trails and had such an amazing experience that this weekend, when trying to decide what we should do, we immediately thought of them. It was just my husband and I with our 2 year old, and while she wasn't old enough to go on a trail ride, they made us feel so welcome and invited us to just walk around the property and visit the horses. Everyone that works there would say hello and ask us if we needed anything anytime they passed by us and they even gave our daughter a few carrot treats to feed the ponies. She fed them and pet them and was thrilled. A guy named Porter came out and was absolutely amazing. He introduced us to some of the horses and gave us some background on them. If you're visiting or even local, this is a must do!!!! We will be back yearly. :) read more

I was disappointed in the front end operation manager as she seemed way behind the power curve. This was especially true when it came to having enough wranglers to handle the rides. Three times she asked me to return at a later time and/or day because there wasn't enough help there. Also, I made a reservation over the phone for two days in advance, showed up only to find out it wasn't written down in there records, and again was told they didn't have wranglers to accommodate. I was very dismayed. I know things aren't back to normal from Covid, etc. but, this isn't the way to run a business and have expectations of success. I won't be back anytime soon. read more

WOW! These horses were great. Our guide was great with my daughters 7 and 9. We had a great time seeing the White Mountains from a different view. Although it was a little soggy due the recent rain and snow. It made for a unique ride. We were still able to cross the streams and see Scotts Reservoir, that was awesome. The horses were well mannered and easily controlled. We were in a group of five, it was top notch service!!! We will definitely be back for a summer time trail ride. Absolutely a great experience!! We came from Greer to Pine Top so our kids could go horse back riding and it was so worth the drive. Past years we used to go to this man in Eager and he was so nice too, but this year we could not find his information so we had to choose someone else. The only other place you can go horse back riding in Greer is xDiamond but they are not flexible on time and availability (we have tried many times to use them through the years) and they are very strict with kids. Porter Mountain was awesome and accommodated my 6, 8 and 10 year old well. They loved the fun ride. Our wrangler was extremely patient and nice. Our boys have Autism and one of our kids asked the wrangler a million questions and our wrangler was just very polite and patient with him. Thank you for giving my kids a great time!! An awesome experience for our church young women's youth group ( ages 11-17) we brought approximately 8 girls up as well as leaders and a wonderful time was had by all. Staff was prompt, attentive to questions the girls asked, and friendly. Horses were well kept and well trained and perfect for the variety of experience levels in our group. Our adventure included a small craft afterwards that engaged the girls. Bathrooms were available to use and a small picnic area was available for us to eat our lunch at before driving home. Amazing!! We had a poor experience at another stable in the area so we called Porter and they got us in the same day! Stephanie and her team were so great. My youngest did a pony ride and my 6 year old and I did the trail ride. They were very kind and patient with the kids. You could tell they really love what they do. The ride was amazing the instructor was great and the ride was awesome. We got back and wanted to take private lessons and then buy merchandise. I said I wanted to trot in my private lesson and the lady was so rude she yelled at me and said "if you want to trot on my tierd horses go somewhere else" keep in mind I am a kid. I get where she is coming from but she could have rephrase it me and my friends and family were in shock we ended up buying merchandise and leaving. read more

Took my daughter here on kind of a last minute idea for something fun to do while in Pinetop. Read the reviews and they were good so thought we'd give it a try and we're glad we did! We literally called about 15 minutes before we wanted to ride and it was absolutely no problem at all. Haylee took us on a one-hour trail ride and we had a blast! Wasn't sure what to expect out of the guide we got but she was amazing. She told us all about the area, the business, and just a great conversation the whole time. The link on the website that is supposed to take you to the address took me to a random place in town, and when we got there the manager said that she gave our rides away. We explained to her that the directions we got on the websites were wrong, but she said that she wasn't going to talk to us about it because the problem on the website wasn't her fault. She also said we had to arrive at 3:45 to get our rides but we were never told that information prior. Went for a very nice ride this morning with 2 adults with four teenagers. it was a very pretty and fun ride. We saw cows, went through streams and even galloped a little. I trust these reviews to steer me toward high quality businesses, so I feel obligated to share mine for you. If you are not an experienced rider, beware. I am not, but I have been on several trail rides at similar stables with excellent reviews and never have had a problem. We booked a 2hr ride, myself and my 4 children. First warning sign was that I was never asked our level of experience. We were put onto horses that just must have been to available, that's all I can think. They turned someone away when we walked in saying they were booked for the day. I was put on my horse with a warning that, "he spooks easily and to hold him, with just the right amount of firmness, but not too much or he might bolt." Um, excuse me?? I'm a city girl, yes. But to pay $50 for a trail ride from an established company with such high reviews gives you a sense of comfort that you will be taken care of. No, I was not. After 10-15 minutes of this horse all over the place and me NOT feeling confident or safe, I demanded to get off, even after being laughed at by our guide and told I was fine. I allowed my kids to go on since they were so excited and I didn't want to ruin their fun (they are older) and I hiked myself back to the stables. And I know I sound like one of "those people", but I'm really not. I think this is the first negative review I've ever written. I was so shaken by the experience and the lack of regard from our guide it took me a long time to calm down. I would have let it go as me just being too scared for a "real" horse ride, but then I found out later that my daughter's horse had to be held onto by its lead the entire 2hrs since it has a history of rolling around in the water and throwing people off! What again!?! AND! When my children returned there was another group returning at the same time. The woman in that group almost got kicked getting off her horse! And she was told it was her fault since she dismounted on the wrong side! Again, how are we supposed to know this??? And no one was there helping her. Everyone watching was so shocked! I respectfully asked for a refund for my ride since I completed 10-15 mins of a 2hr ride on a completely unacceptable horse for my level of experience. The girl working there said she would have to call the owner. Their response? No. you kept a horse out of rotation that could have been booked by someone else, but she suggested I could call them if I wanted. My thoughts?? Money matters more to you than the safety and well being of your guests. Very unhappy and I will never be back. ******My response to owner comment*** 1. You recall me having a conversation in the parking lot?? You weren't there, I never met you. 2. Me saying a quick hello to a family that attends the school I work at = my fault that I was not asked about my experience level?? But I SHOULD have been asked as I was being loaded on the only horse brought out for me, yes? Now, I'm not the expert, but doesn't waiting to ask for experience level until you are actually being loaded up on horses seem a little late? 3. If I was rushed another horse, I was not made aware of it. I got off and was pointed the way back through the trees. That's all I was offered. 4. I'm not experienced, so no I didn't feel in control of a jumpy horse. I was in complete terror, shaking uncontrollably and NOT knowing what to do. When I realized I was only being laughed at (in front of my children) and NOT feeling safe, I just wanted off and to let my kids go on. And yes, besides the fact that my daughter's horse had to be held by the lead the entire 2hrs, they had fun. 5. I have time stamped photos to prove that I was not on that horse more than 15 mins tops. Photo taken of kids before I mounted my horse, next photo taken after I had gotten off and walked all the way back to a clearing and turned to take a photo of my kids crossing the stream at the 2nd crossing. Does it take more than 30mins into the ride to cross the stream once? Because I got off immediately after that. 6. The lady that almost got kicked (her fault?) was the same horse I was on?? Makes me even more glad I made the decision to get off. That also means that horse got you paid double for that 2nd hour I paid for. 7. You wish I would have let you show me?? I'm not sure exactly what that means. I asked to talk to you (since I never met you!), your gal called you, walked away from me on the phone and came back with "sorry, nothing we can do". 8. If I'm at fault for not being an experienced rider and for being afraid, then fine. But you should make that clear to future customers. I intentionally take rides like this in order to become more confident. I'm sorry, but this was a terrible day for me. The least you could have done was talked to me personally or even offered me the 2nd hour as a refund. 9. I misspoke, I have written ONE other bad review in the past that I completely forgot about. Otherwise, they have all been good. I don't make a habit of this was my point. read more

Friendly staff, especially our wrangler Hitch. I have three kids, ages 8, 11, and 13. We were all novices and this was a great introduction to horseback riding. The ride was lovely among the pine trees, past a wildflower meadow, through a little stream, and up to an ice cave. An excellent value, highly recommended. read more

We decided in the two hour Ice Cave ride. One of the horses was SUPER slow and we all had to ride at his pace. There was 8 in our group, I was in the back, and I didn't even see the "ice cave". Apparently the wrangler pointed it out (very tiny cave) to the people in front and said because the horse was so slow we couldn't stop. This was the man reason I paid the extra money fentye two hour ride. The area itself is beautiful, but save your money and go for one hour only. read more

I'm not sure why there would be a bad review about this place. I took my 7 year old for a 2 hour ride. It was so awesome we went back for the sunset ride!!! I've seen the review about "they never asked experience level" and that the horse would roll in water and frankly I think that's a bunch of horse crap. The wranglers were amazing and very attentive to my child with no experience. It's a real horse!! Not a pony ride at a fair. And one of the best experiences that I've had. We just had a really nice experience riding these horses for an hour. The guide took us on a beautiful trail through the woods, where we also crossed small streams and rode along a lake. We already knew we wouldn't be able to run the horses and expected a nice, peaceful experience where we could appreciate nature and breathe in the fresh air --- and that is exactly what we got. When it started thundering another guide found us to give us rain jackets. So nice! Our guide was sweet and answered every random question we had during the ride. We are completely satisfied.
