My grand daughter cracked her barrel on a Backun clarinet. It's been over a month and still haven't got a new one. I ordered one and got it in 4 days. Have a service agreement and thought it would pay for a rental but why should I get a rental when barrels are interchangeable and could used another brand till it came in and why would the keep her clarinet. I own a Schecter Omen with a Floyd-Rose bridge which sat unused for eight months because I broke a string and couldn't figure out how to properly restring the guitar. I took my guitar by Portman's, and even though they were busy, they were able to restring it the same day for under $25. I definitely recommend having someone else (who knows what they are doing) restring your Floyd-Rose. Thanks! read more

I came in during their Black Friday sale to look at electric guitar options for my daughters Christmas present. The gentleman that helped me was wonderful. They had pretty much sold the majority of their special packages by the time I made it in. He helped me build a package that was a great fit for my teen. They also held everything for me for almost a month so I didn't have to hide the gifts at home. Never has a salesperson in the Augusta area ever been so pushy or condescending towards me than the older man with grey hair and glasses who works at this store. I came in to get my saxophone checked out/ get a cork replaced, and was told I would have to drop it off and come pick it up later in the week. Okay, no problem. He starts asking for my information to make an account for me, such as name and phone number and I provide it with no issue. When he asked for my street address, I asked if it was necessary to give that information because it seemed odd. I, personally, prefer not to give my address out to random businesses unless it's necessary for whatever service is being provided. To me, it seemed completely unnecessary to provide an address just to be able to drop off and pick up a serviced instrument. He consistently refused to answer my simple question outright ("is it necessary/mandatory?") and instead decided to be condescending and rude. "Are you a criminal? Is that why you don't want to give it out? Are you serious? In this day and age of social media? Are you going to live in fear your whole life?" The entire encounter was incredibly uncomfortable for me and I will not be returning, for saxophone service or otherwise. I am hoping I just caught the man on a bad day so others don't have to experience this level of horrible customer service. read more

The staff have such a great sense of humor. It still makes me laugh thinking of the way they balanced jokes and friendly service. I appreciated the experience while walking around and trying things out. There's a great number of books, spare pieces for almost everything, and they were pretty chill about folks trying out the guitars, drums, and piano when I was there. read more

I'm a life long guitar player - retired military, with lots of travels, and music stores visited worldwide. I've been in the Augusta area over 20 years. Mmany guitar shops have come and gone. Some better than others. Portman's changed its location, selection, quality and quantity of instruments Over the years like many of the other. I believe I've bought an instrument of one kind or another at every store in town at some point. I've bought several from Portman's and for me, it's maintained the most consistent value, service and helpful expertise It's the one I keep returning to, even after GC opened up. Other stores come and go, but Portman's remains, and either has what I want or can get it quick, aKeats competing pricing. I always seem to have someone talking on my level without trying to bs me into getting something I don't need. They're musicians, not salesmen. When will the owner of this store do something about the lack of salesmanship in their store in Augusta. After visiting a year or so ago and receiving absolutely NO help.. not even one person speaking to me I decided I would give them another shot since they moved locations. New building...SAME OLD NON EXISTENT sales personnel. Three associates stood around, talking to each other about politics and whatever.. ignoring the fact I was in their acoustic section looking to purchase a Taylor 12 string. I should not have to go up to them and interrupt their politicial conversations... I was not acknowledged.. as if I was invisible. I have purchased musical equipment online through Sweetwater and receive excellent customer service. I will go this route and never set foot in this store ever again. read more

Very helpful staff. We needed an adjustment for a clarinet and they did it in a few minutes at no charge. Their classes are also pretty good - for one, they had too many students, so they split it into smaller groups (split by age), which gave better instruction. read more
