This was our very first pottery stop in Seagrove and I am so happy our B&B had us start here! I didn't know it until I made it home, but one of the closed shops I tried to go to (some shops were closed when we were visiting because they were working the state fair)- I did buy one of their pieces here on the first day! Calicutt Pottery- I was thrilled to see I snagged a piece of their art. My favorites here were from Seagrove Art Pottery- a husband and wife couple who make fabulous. brightly color, unique pottery! I did make it to their home store too- but I loved the pieces on display in this shop! This should be your first stop in Seagrove- because you will see a variety of local art in one building!

I was greeted by one of the artists and became immersed in a great geology conversation with him! Turns out he mines his own clay! There was a workbench covered with various clays and natural material. Even some pyrite/fools gold. That and animal bones, insect larvae and more. This is a higher end gallery- and after our conversation, I understand why. The shear knowledge of farming your own clay, testing the temperature for firing, shrinkage, vitrification & absorption rate- a rabbit hole I may someday fall into. I loved his passion for the subject. The art throughout the space was also fabulous. The woman artist was concentrating on her work and her sculptures were fantastic! The colorful fall leaves were a perfect backdrop. I assume they loan and/or sell sculptures, because some of the signs didn't have the corresponding art on the display base. It was a beautiful walk through the woods around a large pond. There was a number of small, medium, and large sculptures. Seeing we were there in mid Octobers, the trees were all in beautiful shades of yellows, reds, and oranges.
