There was a workbench covered with various clays and natural material. Even some pyrite/fools gold. That and animal bones, insect larvae and more. This is a higher end gallery- and after our conversation, I understand why. The shear knowledge of farming your own clay, testing the temperature for firing, shrinkage, vitrification & absorption rate- a rabbit hole I may someday fall into. I loved his passion for the subject. The art throughout the space was also fabulous. The woman artist was concentrating on her work and her sculptures were fantastic! I…read morespent a couple weeks this summer helping to build one in St Augustine- so I am excited to see others kilns now. I loved the pottery shop and was peeking into the studio area- Ben was in there working and came out to chat with us. I had already picked out a couple pieces of pottery from inside the shop. And I was greeted at the shop door by Elvis meowing at me! I reached down to pet him and the girl working the shop told me he was begging for food. Lucky Elvis, I had kitty treats in the car! John chased me into the store when he saw me grab the cat treats, lol. I was able to shop while John fed and pet Elvis! Win, win. I made sure to take plenty of pictures & it turns out- my professor had met Ben when he was in graduate school. Pottery makes for a small world! A must stop on the pottery trail through Seagrove!

Porcelain vases, trays and more- gorgeous crystalline glazes and the piercing lattice designs just added another dimension to these works of art. The price point is also that of an artist- crystalline glazes take a lot of testing and precise firing temps. I am just starting to dabble in glaze making and I have learned more about crystalline glazes over the last year. I bought a small tray as a keepsake and I hope to splurge in the future on a bigger piece! Frank's neighbor pottery shop was one of my other favorites! This is a wonderful stop on the pottery tour!

My dear friend Kathy said i would like the work and she was right! I love crystalline glazes, textured surfaces & varied surface decorations & I could get all of that here! I settled on one cup, sweetly decorated with flowers. Simple, elegant & it felt wonderful in my hand! The gentleman was very sweet too, he knew i was in town for conference & this was a quick stop & a great find!

The anagama kiln and the new one being built out back are impressive. The studios for processing the local clay, throwing and glazing all had individual spaces in historic buildings. I fist loved the chime bowls hanging out front on the porch, the shelves outside full of the sons work. Inside I was stunned by beautiful artistry. I love trees and that was a continued theme in this shop. The soul bowls were lovely too- a concept beautifully brought to realization by the artist. The behind the scenes tour was just the icing. I bought 2 pieces and struggled immensely trying to choose. One carved tree wall plaque and one woodfired bottle with a tree carved in. Thank you for the meet and greet- and I might snag one of the bowl chimes on my next visit!
