Moving from California, I felt completely lost. The community, the friendships, and the familiar faces I relied on were suddenly gone. For years, I had poured my time and energy into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Muay Thai, but when I arrived here, I couldn't find the right training environment. I was looking for an atmosphere built on inclusivity and genuine community, and without that, it just didn't feel whole anymore. I wasn't sure I'd ever find my footing here until I finally mustered up the courage to try something completely new, pottery. When I tell people what I'm obsessed with now, they're usually shocked. It feels like a massive departure from Jiu Jitsu & Muay Thai, but the truth is, the most important part of it to me was always the community. If it weren't for the incredible team at Pottery Lane, I would still be searching for something to fill that void. Big shout out to Kelly, Kate, and Cat for making me feel so incredibly welcome since day one. Today started out as a terrible day, but having a place like this to go completely turned it around. I was given a gift certificate to attend a class and chose to do wheel throwing. We attended the first day in the new location and it was quite spacious and well attended! There's ample parking and the space is easy to find. There was a hand sculpting class going on at the same time, with members and staff working on their own projects as well. Everyone was extremely friendly and I really liked the atmosphere. The class itself was challenging but I really liked having a full demonstration before doing things ourselves. The instructors were really helpful and I liked that there were several so it felt like people didn't have to wait as long for help. I had a bit of an advantage having thrown before in high school but had forgotten a lot. I felt it was pretty beginner friendly and they did a great job explaining the names of things without going too heavily into the jargon nor feeling patronizing. I felt really confident with the bowl I made and liked being able to add my own design to it at the end as well. I do think it would be nice to know about the glaze options ahead of class just in case that affects how we structure or design our pieces. Overall, I definitely think the one-time class was really fun. The memberships and 8-week courses really intrigued me so I definitely think I'll be looking into those! read more

Would not recommend- I had an instructor that was very hands off and would disappear during class to work on her own stuff or would just leave class early. If I asked a question she would just give some vague verbal instruction instead of showing me how it is done. I struggled as a beginner because I felt very lost without guidance from an instructor and this resulted in me only making one piece that I was somewhat happy about. It was a waste of nearly $500 for a 8 week class. When I contacted the owner about the lack of instruction she said she would send out a Google survey asking others about their experience (which she did) but when I asked for a discount on a future class or a partial refund since I was unhappy she ghosted me. Best weekend date experience! Whether you haven't done a clay piece since high school art class or are an expert thrower, it's evident this studio has everything you need to make you feel comfortable and have a great time. Our instructor was patient with us choosing what we were looking to design, giving us tips and tricks to mold it together, and was so glad they did the glazing for us! My small plate turned out even better than expected & my husband proudly uses this mug for coffee in the morning. read more

Loved spending time here creating! This place is so different from other pottery places where you just get to paint, here it's an actual art studio where you get to be trained on the wheel, and create your own pottery with clay THEN fire how you want. Had thrown pottery briefly about 30 years ago and always wanted to return to the wheel. Moved to Grand Rapids about two years ago and discovered Pottery Lane! I've had lessons with most of the instructors now and consider all of them excellent! Scheduled a bachelorette party here and she didn't show up. We got there only to see the building completely empty. I had tried to follow up with her to make sure we were still on for the same date and time a week before the event. Even though I called multiple times over a span of several days she never picked up and never answered my email. Extremely hard to get in touch with and very unprofessional. read more
