Americans familiar with the make-your-own-bowl dining situation will know how this place works…read more This is a fast food restaurant that I first spotted at the Quebec City mall food court. The passing trays looked amazing but we couldn't find seating to save our lives so we struck out to look for another location nearby. You start with a base: quinoa, rice, bulgur, fries (poutine), or lettuce. You choose a number of chicken tenders in one or two flavors, then choose from a variety of toppings. The staff here *understandably* is not great in English, which can of course change depending on where you go and when you come. This was one of our first stops before my high school/college French instruction "clicked on" again, so ordering was mildly stressful for our family. It would have been nice if there were some pre-designed bowl recipes to select from (like Cava, for example). For those of you willing to play the language barrier game, the sky is the limit in terms of how you can personalize your bowl. Like every Quebecois dining establishment, this fast food chain is head and shoulders above any American equivalent. Even their poutine (which can be messed up, I assure you) was among the top poutines I've eaten. This is a great place to grab a quick meal, as light or heavy as you require.

Make your bowl interesting. They offer a variety of grilled chicken with sauces. I ordered- 2 Rouge Bowls with my choice. Though the chicken pieces were small, it was flavorful, and one bowl was more than enough for me. The ambiance was good, big wall size glass, ordered at the counter got the food, and had fun!

I'm giving out five stars because Chez Ashton is everything a poutine should be. However, keep in…read moremind that I'm severely biased on this one. Why? Saint-Louis-de-France is the neighbourhood I grew up in, and this particular Ashton location has not changed since 1997. Hence the nostalgia. I have actually never eaten anything but poutine at Ashton. It's not a fancy place, so the only toppings available are hot-dog, Dulton (grounded meat), extra cheese/sauce and whatnot. I suppose that if I was more objective, I would say fries are average and taste a bit oily (they recently started using smaller ones to get more crisp, but I'm not sure I agree on the decision). The cheese is proper (squeaky = fresh). The gravy is great, but many non-locals are not used to how thin it is. In fact, it should probably be called "sauce" (it's meant to soak the fries). So, Ashton is basically the most endearing comfort food for locals, and just generic fast-food for many outsiders. I call it my own favorite, but it also made my quest for poutine very difficult in Montreal... Tip: In winter, there's rebate if temperature fall lower than -20'C. So -34'C means 30% rebate.

La Belle Province and Les Restaurants Lafleur have better and these are chain restaurants. The fries have a funny taste of them, as if they were fried in oil used to fry the hamburgers. The sauce just doesn't seem right either. The cheese on the other hand is on par for poutine cheese. As for the hamburger, it's nothing special. I got bacon cheeseburger with barbecue sauce, it tastes like any other bacon cheeseburger. Note to all, the patties are fried and not grilled. I'm a send of charbroiled hamburgers over the fried version. So the hamburger really didn't do anything for me. I have to say the taste is pretty good though. Overall, it's not a bad place it's just not a must go to place.

The description of the Pat Poulet burger on the menu had my mouth watering so I ordered it for $10. My friend ordered poutine. Our order shouldn't have taken long since there were only two other people there. True to the diner theme, music from the 50's was playing but it could hardly be heard over the shake machine's refrigeration unit, We had to shout across our table to hear each other, but at least it gave us a good laugh. Meanwhile the teenagers controlling the place were in the back yukking it up. After about a half hour the shake machine's refrigeration unit wasn't so funny. A hand finally appeared at the pickup window and dropped a paper bag on the counter, calling my name. I retrieved the bag and immediately noticed that it weighed exactly what a paper bag of that size should weigh. Perhaps they forgot to put the burger in it? I opened it up to reveal the tiniest sandwich I've ever seen! In between a tiny bun was a dry, deep-fried piece of chicken not much bigger than a McNugget. Tiny tomato slices, some lettuce, and a smear of mayonnaise finished things off. So adorable! My friend's serving of poutine was also tiny, but at least not outright insulting. When we asked for napkins (hidden in the back) two tiny sheets were provided, not nearly enough to do the job. We were met with some resistance when more were requested. I entertained various thoughts: does "burger" in French have a different meaning than in English? Is the exchange rate such that $10 Canadian is like $2 USD? Sometimes a culinary experience is so ridiculous it more than makes up for the awfulness. That said I will always cherish this memory I have of the tiny sandwich I had at Pat Retro.
