This iconic building was completed in 1984 for PPG Industries, a 100-year-old company that was founded and based in Pittsburgh. PPG, which stands for Pittsburgh Plate Glass, began as a glass company, and they paid homage to their past by covering the building complex in nearly 20,000 pieces of the company's glass. We did not get a chance to go top of the building (i am not even sure whether it's open for the public or not) but we were downtown, exploring the area, and saw this square and just like WTC, they have marked 1 PPG, 2 PPG... It is the third tallest building in Pittsburgh and the tenth tallest in Pennsylvania. The building is topped by its iconic glass spires which give the building a very interesting appearance.

PPG stands for Points Per Game in sports stats, or if you're dating a lot of girls at once in England, and you average out how many Pounds Sterling you spend on each one weekly, it comes out to your PPG total (Pounds Per Girl). It also works if you're dating and spending on multiple men... Pounds Per Guy. In Pittsburgh, though, PPG stands for something totally different and not sports-related (because their sports teams win everything every season anyway, so)... it's the most spectacular and noticeable and memorable building in a very impressive set of stunning downtown skyscrapers. Pitt is one of the most underrated and stunning cities in the USA, and this building is a significant part of the reason why. What makes PPG Tower (and indeed the whole plaza) so remarkable is two-fold. Firstly, it's made out of glass... it looks like a huge crystal sculpture... and is enormous. Secondly, and even more of a quirk, is that it's designed with all kinds of pointy turrets like a huge, enormous, disney-esque, futuristic, cartoonish glass castle. Certainly if buildings all over the world had this sort of imaginative design, then skylines everywhere would be even better for it. It's my favourite building to wander around, photograph, and visit in Pittsburgh, and the best view of it is from way up atop Grandview Drive on the west side, from one of the many viewing points. If you're wondering whether or not you should go and visit, all I can say is, PPG. Please, Please Go.

Very unusual buidling downtown .. looks like a glass castle. rather lovely. We didn't have a chance to see inside or the view from the higher towers.

Beautiful building. Beautifully decorated for Christmas this year. From the outdoor ice skating rink to the immense Ginger Bread House collection inside. Christmas trees everywhere. Santas from all around the world on display. Such a nice place to visit around the holidays.

What a lovely futuristic enclave these Towers are - whimsical in design with those castle turrets and yet the engineering behind the glass building is cutting edge and I really like that architectural play of contrasts. I only ever saw the buildings at night time, and my first thought was that they wouldn't be out of place in the Marvel comic movies - it's something I can totally see Iron Man building for his HQ! The other cool thing at night is that there are these rainbow coloured lights that shine down into the square and the glass the buildings are constructed of reflects those colours so it's an ever changing mood. Great addition to the Pittsburgh city skyline, that's for sure! Wonder what it's like to work in them however? (hope a local Pittsburgh Yelper will write about that soon!) My daughter loved the Santa's of the World. She had a great time and what a fantastic way to spend the day. The skating rink and tree added to the wonder of the season! It's a great time for children of all ages!

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Keith! He had to do much first hand knowledge of the facility,…read morehaving worked there himself when he graduated the army. The tour lasted about 2.5 hours and was mostly outside in direct sunlight. There were a few opportunities for shade, but not many. If you come on a hot day, plan to arrive hydrated and grab a complimentary water bottle from the check in desk. You'll need it. Parking is plentiful, the history is intriguing, and the art scattered about the property is thoughtful and engaging. If you're lucky, you'll spot some wildlife who inhabit the surrounding area.

I come from a long line of steelworkers and thought I pretty much knew all there was to know. That was, until the tour. The tour guide was extremely informative. Most of the folks working (volunteering) at Carrie have some connection to the steel industry. In addition to the tour, I have had the privilege of attending events there as well. Yep, they rent out the space. Everything was well put together at the events and having the furances as backdrop took it to the next level. As far as the tours go, I feel so strongly that Pittsburgh natives and tourists alike take one. It's really incredible to learn how much of the country was built because of Carrie.
