Located in The Strip District along Smallman Street in front of The Terminal…read more The new Pittsburgh Walk of Fame is located in downtown at the Strip District right in front of The Terminal shopping center. Very nice inaugural ceremony that included special guest, Batman The Dark Knight!! Aka Michael Keaton. The area of the Strip District was also featured in Jack Reacher the movie from the bar scene. A nice compliment for our local native celebrities. The first class of ten included are, Nellie Bly, Andrew Carnegie, Rachel Carson, Jonas Salk, Andy Warhol, August Wilson, George Benson, Fred Rogers, Roberto Clemente, and Michael Keaton! To get a little more in depth info on each celebrity there is an app available to download. The street was closed from 17th to 21st Street on Smallman Street for the ceremony that lasted about an hour and a half. Slightly overcast day but the sun was still shining. We may not be Hollywood, but we still have our fair share of stars from our city. The stars have a little snippet about the life and career of the celebrity but could use a icon depicting their careers, such as a Projector for Film Star, a TV for a television star, a paint palate for artist, etc. Still a very cool concept for our city. Looking forward to witnessing future stars added along the sidewalk at The Strip District in downtown Pittsburgh. A must stop for tourists and locals alike. Enjoy!!

There's just one sports legend honored, and that is Roberto Clemente. It was great to see Fred Rogers, Rachel Carson, Jonas Sall and August Wilson were all included. This is a fun walk, and it's interesting to hear conversations and to take photos.

Part of the fun is that the bridge can put you on Rialto, which is notoriously steep and narrow. It can be a headache if someone trys to climb Rialto in a wide truck, but otherwise it's a real part of local flavor and I look forward to taking it. The pedestrian walkway is a real treat and it connects to an amazing bike/pedestrian trail that follows 28.

The bridge build was completed in 1928. One thing I don't like about the bridge is that weird little dip. As soon as you go through the light towards Troy Hill from the Strip, your car does a little dip. It's nothing horrible but it's there. Yinzers know what I'm talking about. If you're checking out Pittsburgh, check out all of the bridges. It is after all, the City of Bridges (one of many names for the city's offerings). However, getting through the tunnel from Parkway West (376 West) can be less than glorious as the two-lane highway often bottlenecks into the tunnel when traffic is the most backed up. But, take a deep breath, proceed with caution, and enjoy that beautiful landscape that is Pittsburgh.

It's a nice long tunnel, too, just to heighten the drama. Well, it's a long tunnel to get through a damn mountain but it has that effect as well. I don't even know why I ended up coming that way as I was driving from Detroit and much to my disappointment last month Google Maps didn't direct me through this epic tunnel but instead chose a more direct, sensible route, robbing us of the sudden reveal I'd raved to my dad about. It was an approach much like any approach to just about any city. Never fear - the Holiday Inn Express I'd coincidentally booked meant we'd travel to PNC Park for all 3 Tigers games there through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and be hit with BAM!!! YOU'RE SUDDENLY DOWNTOWN!! every time. And unlike almost every bridge we crossed over traffic wasn't absolutely logjammed through this tunnel. It'd slow down but it wasn't stop and go sea of taillights lighting up red for miles like the bridges sometimes were. And it afforded a little more breathing room before breaking out into four off ramps to choose from than the bridges. Actually it lets out onto a bridge after which you better be in the right lane for one of three choices. Old hat for locals I'm sure and most people are cool about letting people over but I'm glad the tunnel lets you emerge back into daylight or nighttime and the downtown view and reorient yourself for a few seconds before you hit some spaghetti junction. Anyways, great tunnel and it had been a very long time since I've driven through one besides something brief on the freeway. I'm sitting in Hart Plaza trying to figure out the last time I've driven through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. At any rate I like the Fort Pitt Tunnel better.

Four lanes for motor vehicles along with sidewalks for crossing on foot. Official name is George Rankin, Jr. Memorial Bridge. Its namesake was a well-known politician and banker. Today, I was in a Pittsburgh city bus heading out of town and it was nearly hilarious watching our bus driver merging from the various on-ramps to get across the Monongahela River. He was only successful because people are scared of buses. Otherwise, I'd probably still be there! With a clearance over the river of 471 feet and a total length of 1207 feet, the bridge is impressively awesome considering that it is over sixty years old. It was an achievement for the time as the first computer-designed bridge in the world. The bridge is painted a bright yellow and there is no toll to cross it in either direction. I'm a fan. It is easy to get on and off and the traffic management seems to work well as I've never been stuck or stopped on this bridge in traffic. It is also a beautiful bridge to walk or bike over. Plenty of room for pedestrians and you can't beat the view! I've taken a double stroller over it, walked it, run it and biked it and it was a pleasant experience every time. Prior to the construction of apartments and condos next to Station Square, this bridge had a lot of traffic from downtown commuters who would park across the river and walk downtown. Now I think parking is more expensive on the Station Square side, so much of the traffic is from those using the trail or just looking for views rather than cheap parking. A great bridge to drive over, walk over or just take pictures of from afar.

Some people have zero respect for historic locations!! Other than that, I recommend walking through this beautiful bridge you can see downtown Pittsburgh and the Steelers Stadium from a distance.
