Our first stayed through pre-k, the second stopped only because of the free local 3k, and our third is still happily enrolled. We've trusted this school for over 5 years with our 3 children, and have looked forward to sending each of our kids here. The admins are responsive, the teachers, for the most part, seem to love children and their jobs (we've had one over the years that wasn't great, but she is gone now). Many of the current teachers are the same as when my son started over 5 years ago. There is always strong communication throughout the day, they regularly post eating/sleeping/potty events as well as photos and videos so we can always see how our kids are doing. They eat healthy food and are given a wide variety of fun activities. As infants they help them learn to sit, walk, fine motor skills, even potty train them. As they grow older there is an academic schedule to help them learn their letters, counting, colors, etc. One of my sons went through a hitting phase, and the admins and his teachers sat with us to give us tools to help him, and made sure he wasn't endangering others in the class. When I bring my two older kids in to pick up the youngest, all the teachers remember them and there's always plenty of smiles and hugs. They do follow the DOE schedule, so are closed more often than I'd like (yeah, its annoying), but its worth it for the quality of care at a reasonable cost. As other reviewers have noted, Covid was not easy, especially on daycares. Yes, dropoff/pickup was inconvenient, yes it was hard to plan around cases shutting down classrooms, and yes it took a hit on morale and staff turnover, BUT these are all a direct result of them taking precaution and carefully following safety guidelines. I'm happy to say that none of my children got covid while at BKA, and I thank their thoroughness for this (these were pre-vaccine days, it was scary!). For the most part, all is back to normal now. I get that there's always an exception and some reviewers have had bad experiences, but we absolutely adore BKA, and most the parents we chat with do as well. It is a loving, caring, clean daycare (with outdoor space!) that we couldn't recommend more.

His very 1st day my son was sent home in a soggy diaper, wet clothes, and shoes on the wrong feet. I informed the school of various triggers, and habits. This was completely ignored and he would come home completely distressed everyday. My son also has a texture issue so he is very selective with foods. The school had me supply his food/milk/snacks/diapers/wipes ect. and pay over $300 weekly. The entire time my son was there they allowed him to do whatever he wanted. He rarely engaged in class routine and wasnt encouraged to do so either. There was nobody there knowledgeable about his diagnosis thus making it impossible for anyone to work with him. I have since pulled my son out of school and have been home schooling him. In the 5months since we started my son says words can identify numbers and some colors and has been open to other foods.

I received no response from the CFO (not even a denial of the request), which I think is telling. xxx Dear Mr. CFO, My infant daughter attended Explore & Discover from September - December 2018, at which point we pulled her from the program. I have dreaded writing this email because retelling this experience sickens me as a parent. I want to be clear that our early termination was forced based on the improper conduct of your staff. I am writing to request a refund of our $X,XXX deposit. My daughter had a tough experience at E&D. I was told at every pickup she was refusing to eat and yet the head teacher denied my request to come in and nurse her for meals (which is counter to what your Handbook encourages). I was also told at every pick up that my daughter was inconsolable and spent the day crying by the door, yet Head Teacher also denied my requests on 10/4/18 and 12/4/18 to come in to the classroom to help ease her comfort. Her responses ranged from "no" to "absolutely not". She denied me access even after I communicated that the director had agreed it was a reasonable request. As you know, this denial of access to my child violates Article 47 of the New York City Health Code as well as the New York State Day Care regulations. Frustrated by feedback that my daughter's distress was continuing (and having seen an increase in her anxiety at home - tantrums, hitting), I spoke to Head Teacher on 12/11/18 requesting classroom access again. She angrily responded that: - I had no right to enter the classroom - My daughter's poor transition to daycare was my fault due to my lack of scheduling, consistency, etc - My daughter likely wasn't a good fit for daycare - She could only offer my daughter so much comfort, she had other babies to take care of After this conversation, I reached out to Director and asked if we could have a joint meeting with Head Teacher. This was the third time I had approached Director about being denied entry to the classroom. I was told she had already spoken with Head Teacher and based on how well my daughter was doing, they no longer believed we had a problem and I would no longer need to sit in with the class. I found Head Teacher's report of my daughter's sudden turnaround alarming, given that it opposed what she had communicated to me earlier that day. Given Director's acceptance of Head Teacher's account, I could no longer trust my daughter's safety in the hands of your staff. As I explained to both the Director and GM, this is not an early cancelation as I attempted numerous times to make this situation work. I do not expect to be penalized for the bad behavior of your teaching staff and hope that you will agree to issue a full refund of our $X,XXX deposit.

I happened to be at the park today wa group of kids from the school also happened to be at the park playing. Please take a look at the photos. Ever since they got there, one of the teacher or maybe TA sat on the bench the entire time, and was on her phone constantly, even with headphones on! Really? The only time I heard her discipline the group of students was when she literally yelled across the park...she didn't even bother walking over to them. If she's a head teacher for the classroom, I didn't know head teachers can relax during open door play time...that's a first for me. A little while after, I caught the other two teachers were also surfing on their phones....I was really surprised to see all three of them were busy looking at their phones. Considering this school is one of the most expensive school in the area I would think they have the best teachers...well...boy was I wrong. Another school also happened to be at the park too, and those kids were much older however they each had an adult with them and they were extremely engaging with the kids. Don't believe me? See for your self. A month ago, the owner did reach out to me and to let me know that the teachers in the photos will not be returning to work, however...I still see one of the teachers in the pic at the school yard just a week ago...On the other hand, I'm sure this was a wake up call for all the teachers there to make sure to leave their phones behind while at work. Either way, my son will not be coming to this school.

This was the best decision ever because it was a seamless transition from when he was there for pre-k. The faces are familiar and most of his pre-k friends also go there for AfterSchool! Patoir's prep has a great service where they pick up the kids from the local, elementary schools and bring them to the afterschool. If your child travels home by bus, then they meet your child at the designated drop off spot and take them to the AfterSchool also. Snacks are provided once they're there so you never have to worry that your child is hungry if they had an early lunch period at school. The children are always cleaned up before they go home so if they have any afterschool activities like dance, karate or music you don't have to worry that they'll be messy. Overall they seem to manage the different age groups pretty well and the kids all get along and look out for each other. A top tier service that I would definitely recommend!

The daycare has been open for many years and they have staff members who have been working there for around 10 years, which to me is incredible, and speaks volumes. The owner, Miss Marcia, is probably the friendliest person you will ever meet. They are just all such sweet people. They have been very flexible with us - my 6 year old son goes to them for after school care and they were willing to meet him at his school bus stop. They do a great job with him, getting all his homework done and encouraging his interests and hobbies. My daughter has been there since she was 4 months old, so everyone there is just part of her family as far as she's concerned. She runs to them in the morning, and on occasion doesn't want to come to me when I pick her up in the evening, she wants to be with them! You'd think it'd make me feel bad, but all I feel is how lucky I am that she loves it so much there! I really am a fan of the family-style daycare as I think it's great for the kids' social development. They learn so much from the older kids and it's really good for them to be in a mixed age group, all playing together. Our experience has been great. They are willing to follow any feeding guidelines you might have - I sent expressed breast milk daily with my daughter for her first year, and that was no problem for them.
