I came for the homecoming tailgates. This year seems unusually crowded. They were people and cats everywhere. One of my friends invited me as his son is a student and he tailgates every year. I was able to park across the street at the church for $20. There are RV's galore. There are a couple of stages for performances. 2chains was here this year. Also there were a few food trucks on campus. The one think missing with thousands of people walking all over. Not enough port a potty's. Well worth attending every year. read more

PPPPPPPPPPVVVVVVVVV....Youuuuuuu Know! Excellent School with Awesome Professors, AMAZING CAMPUS (Beautiful student housing, recreation center, stadium, fun events for the kids to participate in, can't forget the PV class shuffle). One of my favorite college campuses (I have others but PV is definitely one of my favorites) especially at night. You have to come to Prairie View A&M to work hard the school and your professors expect nothing less. My best friend graduated from PV with a degree in Mechanical Engineering she went on to get her Masters Degree from MIT in the field. I can't speak about their online education program and I don't want to minimize someone's experience with the school but the experience of being a student living on campus and being a full time member of the college community might be different than participating in their distance learning (online) program. In terms of contacting the school like all HBCU's you have to be very persistent with contacting administration - financial aid, academic counselors, housing, etc...However, whenever I call they are extremely helpful, respectful, and responsive to my requests as a out of state parent. PV was not what I expected it to be if you're thinking about coming here think twice, when I first came in in 2017 I thought this was the perfect school for me but then towards the end of my freshman year things started to go downhill for me. Professors wasn't as helpful, just there for the money,financial aid was giving me problems with my money and housing was another big problem. There is a few ppl I met that actually was genuine at PV but alot of ppl at PV were borderline fake. University Village is corrupt, I made countless reports about roommates and friends of theirs that stayed over who were smoking and doing drugs due to me being an asthmatic and the CAs did nothing everytime I felt unsafe. At the end of the day, I got charged for everything and they would go threw my things in the fridge behind my back. I am in the process of transferring but PV is really holding my transcript and housing is trying to charge me a lot of money this school has really let me down to the max and I don't want no part of it. As an out-of-state student the school turned out to be a huge disappointment to me. read more

After 14 years of teaching high schoolers the fine art of reading and writing, I decided that a career tweak might be in order, else I might not make it to retirement (a) with sanity intact, or (b) without joining Amy Winehouse in rehab. I do enjoy working with teenagers in the high school setting, so began thinking about becoming a school counselor. This desire sent me on a research project: find a university that offers the classes mandated by the Texas Education Agency. I found out that most schools require a candidate to take at least 45 hours in a counseling program and graduate with a master's degree, worthy of become a psychologist. Well, 45 hours! Geez! The TEA requires the graduate level classes, 2 yrs of classroom teaching experience and a master's degree. Period. I already have a master's in education, and certainly have no need nor desire to spend another 3 years in graduate school. Ugh! Enter Prairie View A & M. The lead counselor at my school recommended I talk to them, and boy, am I glad she did. Their School of Education has an Educational Leadership and Counseling program, which offers the classes mandated by the state (30 little ol' hours), after which one can take the state's counseling certification test. But wait, I live in Austin, and PVAMU is pert near to Houston! No problem. All of the classes are offered online. This is where the "meh" comes in. Although I've got 12 hours under my belt and have learned quite a bit in the process, I have to say that their distance learning program needs serious attention. Perhaps they're new to the online method of instruction, I don't know, but the professors are hard to reach, feedback in the form of grades and comments is slow, and as a teacher I know how important feedback is, fah cryin' out loud. When I started my program, I basically had to figure out WTF was going on. I got no email saying "welcome, susan, here's how you access your courses," or any such thing. I was two weeks late getting started my first semester! Yet, I'll soldier on, because PVAMU is still the only college, online or face-to-face, that offers the TEA-approved, less-hours program. I have been a part-time student at PVAMU for a few semesters now. I have enjoyed the different professors that I have had. I have done well in my classes so far. My issue is with the registration process and also the lack of communication. It was initially helpful to see an advisor when I was registering for classes. However, I think that it is ridiculous and a waste of time to have to see an advisor EVERY semester. I am forced to get off work early and drive all the way to the main campus for a 5 minute meeting to get a pin number. Also, when trying to see if I could go to the Northwest campus to register, because it's closer, I never got a call back or an email response. It's been over a week and I have never received a response. I am hopeful that things will get better for future semesters. read more

This is THE HBCU in Texas ! Prairie View Produces productive people. I feeel at home when I'm away from home!

I've always tried to support HBCU's being that I graduated from another great HBCU. I have to say that my attempt with Prairie View's online counseling graduate program was a waste of time and is currently a lingering problem. I applied and was accepted into one of their program but was never able to get my courses rolling due to the constant login issues and trying to handle everything over the phone living in another city 4 hours away. I was charged tuition for classes that I was never able to start due to the login issues that could never be resolved by their I.T. department. I was given the run around so much, that the courses started and I was getting over 2 weeks behind. Eventually I decided to drop the courses and was asked to fax an add/drop form due to login issues but they claim to have never received it. Now I'm disputing over $1100 tuition charges for courses I never had the opportunity to take. Ultimately I decided to not attend this school due to so much red tape, unprofessionalism and how unorganized everything was. I hope to get this resolved so that I will not have to deal with this headache anymore. With so many online programs out there, my advise is to please choose wisely, unfortunately I didn't with Prairie View. read more

Unprofessional. If you call, you'll either get the run around, or no answer at all. Whoever they have to answer the 936-261-1000 number usually always sounds lazy & uninterested with their job. When I call for a specific person, they are NEVER available, no matter who it is. Whenever I call & have to leave a message for a specific person with someone else, somehow the person the call was intended for never gets my message, and if they do, I never get a returned phone call or email to resolve my initial reason for contacting them. PVAMU needs to stop being so cheap & hire people who are qualified to handle important business in a timely manner. I've been affiliated with PVAMU since 2011, & since then, I rarely ever had anything positive to say about the way they handle business. It's a shame that I pay PVAMU so much money & it goes to the athletic & recreational departments, & the pockets of these lazy workers, as opposed to it helping to better my education. You would think making the deans list & traveling from the Midwest just to attend this university would make me a good candidate for a scholarship. Hell, I don't even get financial aid. Smh. But of course, the money I pay (out of pocket) for my financial aid goes to the students who play sports & the students who struggle to maintain a 2.0 GPA. Prairie View needs to get it together. Now I understand why TAMU does the minimal in supporting PVAMU, because PVAMU does the minimal in everything that actually matters. read more
