This is an updated review. From the turntable playing cool jazz to the walls lined with books for sale and great tea and coffee I have come to love this place. The owner is the definition of that cool neighbourhood guy that is really involved with the community. The weekend staff are very successful at taking care of all your needs. When I first read about Press Books Coffee and Vinyl, I thought that it might be located where another used bookstore was when I used to live in East York. So I dropped by after work last week, and it was in the same location, but almost everything was different (and I mean much improved!). There are books shelved along the walls, records in bins down the centre, and a coffee counter with a couch and few chairs near the front, all well organized. (In comparison, the previous place was a hodge podge of books piled anywhere and some records in very varied conditions.) I started by browsing through the books. The literature section was mostly standard fare in good condition, but with a few less common works mixed in. There are separate sections for sci-fi, mystery and romance; then various sections of non-fiction from history to entertainment, and I believe a children's section at the end. Most of the books I looked at were in good condition, and there was sign about their pricing based on the original price (which I don't recall, not sure how that happened?). The record bins were sorted by genre, with some new arrivals at the front, and some bargains below in crates. Again, all the ones that I looked at were in good condition, and mostly $5 each for the used ones. I thought the selection was very good for it's size, a lot of things that I already have or might be interested in, again including some less common ones mixed in. The coffee counter had some pastries and snacks, and I think that they also sell bags of coffee beans. While she was making my coffee, I had a nice chat with the server about how the new owner had improved on the old 'hodge podge' that I mentioned above. In the end, I bought 2 paperbacks and 2 hard-to-find 1970's records and a mocha for $18. Definitely a place that I will be re-visiting; it seems to be very well designed for my tastes in particular. read more

Really great owner, great coffee, awesome vinyl collection, and a decent number of books. The world needs more places like this!

Press book has a lot of potential to be the "go-to" café in the area, but there are certainly a few issues that are hindering what I believe could be a high level of business success. Firstly, the pros : -Good and well priced coffee (I'm talking the drip, as I've never had anything else there) I don't know if it's fair trade/organic or not, but it's good. -Great service The coffee man is quick, kind, and knows his stuff -Inexpensive baked goods -Enjoyable atmosphere. I like the look and feel of the place. It's not overly polished and the books lined along the wall and vinyl covers look great! -Eclectic selection of books/DVDs/vinyl that are well priced and ready to go home with you, if you're into that sort of thing. -Free WIFI, which is always a good thing! Finally, the cons: -Bad seating. They REALLY need to revisit this aspect of their business. The seating, quite frankly, just sucks and they need to get rid of all of it. They need to invest in more work stations (tables with access to plugs), as well as a comfy chair or two to sit and chat. -Loud and intrusive music. The music should be more background and not prevent you from working or chatting with your friend -Poorly located washroom in the basement This is less of an issue, but one that needs to be addressed by either cleaning the basement or moving it upstairs (actually they should clean up the basement for more retail space) I think that they need to focus on shaping their business identify: Are they a book/record store that just happens to serve coffee on the side? Or are they a coffee shop that uses the space effectively by lining the walls with books/DVDS, and offers great seating as well as well placed records for sale. I would very much prefer that they focus their energies on building the latter. I hope they fix some things and stick around. read more

I just began collecting record vinyls and I was so happy to find Spiderland by Slint on my first look through! The place is brimming with various items and as such, it's packed with character! I'll be back to find more little gems for my collection quite soon! read more

This place is a cool concept and much needed at this end of the Danforth. It's full of old paperbacks, DVDs and vinyl. All cool things. Unfortunately, I'm no sure if this particular neighbourhood is ready for a place like this. If they can stick it out (they just opened) it would be really awesome. The downside is that this place sells grocery store coffee. My friend had a soy latte and it was made with Carnation. My earl gray tea latte was mostly foam. Not sure why anyone would come here for the drinks if you could make it at your own place. This aspect of the shop definitely needs to improve, fast. This record shop is what it is. Records are not their only focus as books and darn great coffee shares the store equally. The records, a relatively small collection are somewhat loosely sorted however they are probably the best priced store east side of town. I have got some bargains there and some unique stuff. Really nice owner/staff and relaxing environment with space/wide corridors to do your books/ records hunting. read more

In the hotter months, it really takes all my willpower not to stop in for their iced coffee. I'm addicted! Their lattes are nice too. I love browsing the books and even though I don't have a record player, I love browsing those too. Everything is reasonably priced (I even got my daughter some books for $1!) and staff are friendly. The one thing I would change is seating. There should be more! read more

Friendly service and very good coffee (I typically have a cappuccino). The atmosphere with books all around you is great. Loved the background music. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars are the opening hours. I'd love to be able to come in the evenings after work. read more

An oasis of coffee and culture in the wasteland that is Danforth east of Woodbine. Decent new and used vinyl selection at reasonable prices; intriguing selection of cheap books; owner spins vinyl and serves good pastries and coffee. Casual, comfortable atmosphere. Delightful. read more

ok place..honestly in the east end there's not too many places to go...but i have to say,,i find the girls that work there are quite rude. especially the heavy set one. sorry no offense but she just sits there or chats away. she does realize that shes being paid to.....you know...work? read more
