Howard Brown Park is very pretty, with a gazebo and awesome maritime scenery. The marker remembers Norwich's maritime heritage and its huge role in shipping and trading, leading CT to be an early advocate of establishing Colonial naval forces. The two-sided marker was dedicated in 1977, and is in pretty good condition.

There were lots of ducks and I spotted a look which was fun to watch dive into the water over and over again and see where he'd pop up in the water. I could have sat their all afternoon. The only negative thing was the amount of people smoking and littering alone the deck. It was frustrating that people did not care to take care of their own city. Overall, I loved it.

More recently, I've noticed a lot of people not taking care of their dogs poop. It is all over the place. To add on to that, today my dog was attacked by another (bigger) dog. It grabbed her by the leg and dragged her. She now has a stitch in her leg from the puncture wound. Point of this review... watch out for dog poop and watch out for other dogs. Be cautious. I don't want this happening to anyone else.

The info on this plaque is pretty dry. It's surprising to me that as old as this place is…read more(incorporated in 1687) they couldn't dig up a few more interesting nuggets of information. This is a two-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission, with the familiar white lettering on a blue background. The marker dates to 1975 and has the same lettering on both sides. One side is badly faded and streaked, while its doppelganger on the reverse is in far superior condition. It's located on a grassy strip in front of the Volunteer Fire Department on the corner of Jewett City Road and Shetucket Turnpike. As for the dryness of the plaque's content, judge for yourself... here's the full inscription: Incorporated in 1687, Preston was settled mainly by sons and grandsons of founders of surrounding towns on land purchased from the Mohegan Indians. It was probably named for Preston in Suffolk, the English home of Thomas Parke, one of the earliest settlers. Initially the town developed around the church in what has been long know as Preston City, where Amos, Fobes, Tracy and Treat land grants came together. The town annexed in 1786 a portion of Norwich called Long Society, which included Poqyetanuck. In 1901 a part of Preston was annexed to Norwich. Preston formerly included Griswold, which separated in 1815 Erected by the Town of Preston, the Preston Historical Society and the Connecticut Historical Commission 1975
