As to the walk to Ikea, a word of warning. It seemed a safe enough walk in broad daylight, but there are a couple of alleyways that might earn a different perspective after the sun sets, if you know what I mean. The way is well marked with signs and arrows, so no worries about getting lost. A central platform with tracks on the outside, Neasden is a pleasant enough station, with no elevator access to street level. There are Oyster readers and ticket barricades at the station.

It dissects the city in an almost north, south direction, running from Hampstead Heath to Pimlico. I love this bus because it is regular, quick and doesn't fill up with the late night fools that have had one to many WKD Blues. It's a nice station that is a bit more "overground" than "underground", meaning that it just doesn't look like a Tube station. Pinner is in Travelcard Zone 5, between North Harrow and Northwood Hills on the Amersham/Chesham branch. Trains from here into London go to Baker Street and sometimes further. There is a staffed ticket booth and automated ticket vending machines as well as the usual ticket barricades and Oyster readers. Surprisingly, this station is completely step-free, which earns it a fourth star in my rating guidelines. Just outside and across the way is a full-size Sainsbury's and a mini-cab taxi office is attached to the station. Note that the Tube does not run all night. There is a last train into London,generally between 12:00-12:30 am on weeknights and 11:30-12:00 on Sunday's.

During peak times,only All Stations or Semi-fast trains stops at Pinner so the frequency is but less compared to Harrow-on-the-hill but not a big issue. If I happen to get a slow train I jump into a fast at Harrow-on-the-hill. The southbound platform has a news agents and also toilet facilities reminding one of how stations were in the past. A good mix of old and new the station is a small two platform one. The main entrance to the station is to the south-bound however the northbound has an exit which is open during peak times which is convenient for me. The station car park is huge and is attached to a large Sainsbury's.

Second trip to London we took the London underground from Heathrow to Holborn all along the Piccadilly line without transferring. 23 stops along the line but we we were seated the entire time carrying day packs and one carry-on luggage each.. The cost was the equivalent of $7 per person. If you are coming from Heathrow airport during rush hour you can take the Heathrow Express directly from the airport too Paddington station. For two people this would be about the same Fare as Uber. And you would still have to get from Paddington station to your central London hotel. In our case we could have taken the Elizabeth Express from Heathrow airport to Tottenham Court road station and walked the mile to our hotel near Holborn underground station. The fair would have been about double that of the London underground. Both of the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line are more luggage friendly. Compared to the London underground. The London underground has contactless payment. You simply scan your credit card on entry and scan the same credit card on exit. Seats seats are cloth with armrest. People with oversized luggage can put your luggage near the doors in special areas. is not advised during peak hours was standing room only. Unlike New York City most London stations have working escalators making it possible, but not easy, to carry luggage on the trains. Make sure you put your luggage on its side. One person put his luggage on his wheels in the luggage area but the luggage rolled out the entrance on its own at the next stop.

London Underground is an excellent model of public transportation. We used it to get to and from…read morethe airport from Paddington Station, which was near our hotel. London Underground is certainly cheaper than a taxi or uber, and we had no problems finding room on the trains with our luggage (two people, each with a carry on). Announcements remind you to "mind the gap", and the stations we visited were staffed and welcoming. One even had an inspirational quote up. As expected, some stations are more modern than others since they are utilized more. I loved that I could tap my credit card to get through the gates onto the train, rather than buying a physical card or downloading an app. I wish the DC Metro used this system.

Harrow on the Hill is a meet point for several branches of the Metropolitan line heading South to London (Uxbridge, Watford, Chesham, Amersham), as well as the Chiltern trains. As such it can be a great meeting place, but it also become a bottle neck during rush hour. There is a bus depot just as you exit the station and the mall is just across the street The station also has a Cafe Nero (no seating area) right by the ticket booth and a Costa Coffee (with seating area) just before you enter the station I gave it only 3 stars as the station tends to be on the dirty side and the waiting rooms often smell like pee

Conveniently located next to the Underground/Train station and the twin Harrow Shopping Centres of…read moreSt Ann's and St George it is a major travel hub in Harrow. The bus station is not large as such but has a rectangular layout with bus stops on both sides with waiting space in between. The stops are clearly marked and there is an electronic arrival/departure timing boards showing the list of bus routes where buses are expected. The station has a newsagent that sells stuff you need during your travel and also has option to top up the Oyster card as well. There is a small 'Treats' snack shack where you can get small bites and drinks. The station gets extremely crowded during peak times. One of the popular route is 140 which is the service to Heathrow Airport, and is a 24 hr service. As I said, it delivers but nothing to rave about.

The station is located next to the Harrow on the Hill underground station, and just across the road…read morefrom the rear entrance to the St Anns Shopping centre - so very conveniently placed. It has always had a bit of an ongoing thing where it plays classical music throughout the building - I think there was some old thing where classical music prevents kids from staying at a location. Regardless, it's quite nice (although that may be my age aiding that opinion!). The actual layout is a bit of a mess as the buses often get backed up trying to get into the stops around the back of the station as it just takes a little traffic and it all jams up. Plus whenever a bus stops at the first stop around the back, it inevitably jams everything up again. Sadly though, it's a victim of its own success as there simply isn't the footprint available to change the layout to something better since it backs directly onto the underground tracks.

It is the last station that is actually underground on this line before it exits into the open air. Therefore, no wifi or mobile signal here. Highgate is a major station on the High Barnet branch of the Northern Line, serving both Highgate…read moreand part of Crouch End to the east, as well as Southwood hospital. It is used by just under 4.5 million passengers a year. The station has a complex but interesting history. The first station here opened in 1867, on a branch of the Great Northern Railway from Finsbury Park to Edgware. The station at Highgate was in a deep cutting necessary because of the hilly terrain with tunnels at either end. In 1872 a branch was built to the pleasure gardens at Alexandra Palace, diverging just north of the station. Thus it remained until the 1930s, when as part of the planned tube extensions in north London known as the 'Northern Heights' Highgate was connected to Archway (then the terminus of the Northern line) by a pair of deep level tunnels, which emerged north of the station to connect with the Edgware line just before East Finchley. Services began in 1939, although the station did not come into operation until 1941. Part of the plan had also been to bring the Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palace line into the tube network, linking it at Finsbury Park to the line to Moorgate. A new 'High Level' station was built at Highgate to act as an interchange. However, economies after the Second World War meant that the unfinished elements of the 'Northern heights' plan were abandoned, and the line from Finsbury Park to Alexandra Park continued to be operated by steam until 1954, when it closed to passenger traffic. Parts of the branch were retained until 1971 for freight and empty stock movements. Highgate station today comprises the low level platforms only, served by trains to High Barnet and Mill Hill East. The entrances (to Shepherd's Hill and Priory Gardens) are rather modest, and accessed by paths and steps from the surrounding streets which are mostly at a higher level: the area is heavily planted with mature trees, giving it an almost rural feel (and making it slightly spooky at night). There are escalators to a high level exit on Archway Road close to the junction of Muswell Hill Road, but this is not always open. However, the High Level platforms, together with the original 1867 tunnel entrance towards East Finchley are in very good condition and are clearly visible - from the footpaths, especially in winter when there is less vegetation. Their remains are a testament to what could have been!

This was our 3rd visit to London and we just loved this station and it's dual, very convenient…read morelines. First, the Piccadilly is direct from LHR. So that is already a plus, no need for the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth Line. You have access to Cromwell Road for a short stroll to the Natural History Museum & the V&A. Stores in Kensington, north to Kensington High Street, Notting Hill is walkable, you can head west to Richmond etc. The station is also completely accessible, where you do not have any steps from platform to street, which not every station can say. Right outside of the station are a few fast food stores and pubs. That side of Cromwell is not particularly lovely, but when you cross you can feel that it is more residential and less commercial. With the Piccadilly & District Lines together, you can navigate to many areas of the city. I liked staying near Earl's Court and preferred it to the more Eastern parts of the city near Tower Bridge or Shoreditch.
