April 27th 2025. During our first trip to London we took Uber from Heathrow airport to our hotel at Hilton West end. Trip cost about the equivalent of $75. Second trip to London we took the London underground from Heathrow to Holborn all along the Piccadilly line without transferring. 23 stops along the line but we we were seated the entire time carrying day packs and one carry-on luggage each.. The cost was the equivalent of $7 per person. If you are coming from Heathrow airport during rush hour you can take the Heathrow Express directly from the airport too Paddington station. For two people this would be about the same Fare as Uber. And you would still have to get from Paddington station to your central London hotel. In our case we could have taken the Elizabeth Express from Heathrow airport to Tottenham Court road station and walked the mile to our hotel near Holborn underground station. The fair would have been about double that of the London underground. Both of the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line are more luggage friendly. Compared to the London underground. The London underground has contactless payment. You simply scan your credit card on entry and scan the same credit card on exit. Seats seats are cloth with armrest. People with oversized luggage can put your luggage near the doors in special areas. is not advised during peak hours was standing room only. Unlike New York City most London stations have working escalators making it possible, but not easy, to carry luggage on the trains. Make sure you put your luggage on its side. One person put his luggage on his wheels in the luggage area but the luggage rolled out the entrance on its own at the next stop. read more

London Underground is an excellent model of public transportation. We used it to get to and from the airport from Paddington Station, which was near our hotel. London Underground is certainly cheaper than a taxi or uber, and we had no problems finding room on the trains with our luggage (two people, each with a carry on). Announcements remind you to "mind the gap", and the stations we visited were staffed and welcoming. One even had an inspirational quote up. As expected, some stations are more modern than others since they are utilized more. I loved that I could tap my credit card to get through the gates onto the train, rather than buying a physical card or downloading an app. I wish the DC Metro used this system. read more

First off, LOVE that this is an option. If only we had something like this at home! The Underground makes it so easy to get around the city. You can also use your credit card with the tap to pay feature or your card on your phone instead of the Oyster card and it makes it so easy to tap in and out of the station. They have maps for all the stops and connections and the signage is pretty clear as well. Just mind the gap! So far during our visit we have seen some closures and delays and riding with your suitcase isn't the most pleasant thing- pro tip if you have a suitcase go through the stroller/accessible lane to pay because mine got stuck at one of them and it was so embarrassing. You'll also want to check google maps before heading into the tube because you'll most likely lose connection. Have a plan ready of where you're going and what stops you're looking for. Also, consider walking if the weather isn't bad and you're only going a few stops, sometimes it'll be quicker than waiting. read more

Are you kidding? I loved the London Underground! The Tube, whatever you want to call it. It is clean, easy to navigate, and makes the New York City subway look like child's play in comparison. For those new to my channel, I am an avid subway rider, and an avid train enthusiast. Take heed of what I have to say here. The trains are all clean, as are the stations they pass through. Most of the riders are considerate and respectful of your privacy. Trains are fast and frequent. Some lines run 24 hours a day. It is overall just a wonderful system. My only gripe is that it gets hot under there and because the system is so old you can really feel its age in some parts. It's been over 35 years since I used the Tube and when I was in London recently I used it as a quick, efficient way to get from Acton area to Heathrow Terminal 5. It worked perfectly, was quicker than dealing with the roadways and a taxi or Uber and I loved the way they use credit cards to access to the entry/exit gates. The London underground subway system is called the tubes. It opened in 1863 and now has 11 lines, and 272 stations, covering 250 miles of track across the city. We no longer use tokens. I can tap a credit card or telephone on and then tap when getting off. The Underground it's a maze of well marked & labeled steps and escalators. The map was designed by Harry Black, for me, the type is too small to read, so I use the app on my phone or a larger map for the visually impaired. The tube cars are modern, clean & feel very safe. Didn't realize the London Underground had its own Yelp page, but here we go! Had a jolly ol' time taking the Underground on a trip this past October. It was truthfully the first time I've ever taken it on my own, or at least based on what I remember. While Brits may claim this is easier to navigate compared to the NYC Subway system, I slightly beg to differ and think that both are relatively easy to navigate. Sure - the Underground is a bit cleaner and having a fairly new line with the Elizabeth certainly helps. Unlike my NYC counterparts, the Underground can often feel quite open and airy. I believe it's just how the stations were built way back when. Liverpool Street is a perfect example of that with its open air feel. Paddington naturally feels like that too. Perhaps it is the biases of being in central London, but those stations feel like commerce hubs, but in a different fashion at least compared to the Grand Central, Times Square, and/or Fulton Centers of the world. Similar to the DC Metro and perhaps others in the US, you have a tap-in and tap-out system to determine your fares. That is the opposite of the NYC Subway and Boston MBTA system for example. This is fairly easy now if you have Apple or Google Pay as you can just tap your phone. That's kinda become standardized worldwide. Perhaps before the US, there's also a cap in the fare after a certain amount of travel. I made the mistake after leaving Heathrow to buy a physical one-way ticket, which I didn't need. Sorry - it was 8am coming off an overnight flight. Just like NYC, the actual platforms (even on the Elizabeth line) isn't that wide. Also, perhaps unlike the US, be prepared for walking QUITE a lot to get from the entrance to the train or vice versa, especially if you end up venturing on the Elizabeth line that is QUITE underground (pun intended). Similar to other systems, there are easy links to other trains (Thameslink, for example) if you plan your trip ahead. TIP: The Citymapper app will be your best friend while you're here. read more

REFUSED DISABLED ACCESS! Wembley Central Tube Station. I've just arrived to this station at 13:35 and I needed to use the disabled toilets. I am a registered disabled person with a disabled badge and card which states access to use the toilets. Toilets were not out of order (no sign stating this). I approached a worker and asked if I could use the toilet. He refused. I said I have a disabled badge and I am desperate. He said 'you have no right. What I say goes' I told him that yesterday when I came here and was let in with no issues. With that he stormed into the staff room and got the key to let me in. He was huffing and puffing and wouldn't look or talk to me. Full of attitude. While I was using the bathroom, my group overheard him talking to his staff member about how I should not be using it and I take it for granted and saying nasty things about me. I am disabled with a legal badge which I showed him. When I finished and was heading out of the station, he was as making rude comments and made me and my group so uncomfortable and embarrassed. I am not sure how rude people can work in such a public sector. I have legal rights and he made me feel terrible for having a disability. I wish no one has to experience this person. He was super aggressive and that is why I didn't approach him as I don't know what he would have done. I will go out my way to avoid using this station. I pray that he gets investigated because this was the most upsetting situation for me since becoming disabled! I would find myself many times on the Piccadilly line since I stayed in SOHO. I just paid for one way fares since I planned more on walking the city anyway. You may use the contactless Oyster card (if planning lots of travel), contactless debit and credit cards, or Apple Pay. So it's rather convenient. In fact, I saw her on the Piccadilly line.. an angel.. that I'm sure... La-la-la-la La-la-la-la La-la-la-la, la... All in all, the London Underground is great-great-great grandparents old, but it retains this magical charm about it too, plus the musk. Terrible customer service ever experienced. Unreliable ​as trains often delay and many stations have bad air and leaking issue. We tried to get our unused balance out of the Oyster card, but unable to do so from the machine as the card is older generation, but that's the only card type they offered to visitors. Then we looked for up the ticket office, which was supposed to be opened on Sunday according to their websitewebsitewebsite, so we rushed to the ticket office, then found out it was closed. We asked for the staff in the photo for help, but he was extremely rude and unwilling to helphelp and told us to get away! One of the best public transportation systems that I know. The London Underground network is, I believe, the best way to travel if ever in London. The inside is super clean and the trains come fairly quickly - one every 3-4 minutes. However, it may take a while to figure out as they have multiple lines going in various directions. But there are plenty of signs and employees to help you out once you get into the station. Some tips for the Underground: - The price for traveling between different zones is different than that of traveling within the same zone. - Get an Oyster card even if you're only going to be here for a few days. Super convenient, just a swipe of a card and you can go off. - On special occasions (New Years Eve) the Underground is free at specific times of day. - Check to see if it is still operating on special holidays. When I was there, they were not operating during Christmas. Highly recommend using this when ever visiting London. Super efficient and each station is really so unique and different. read more

12/10/2018: Today, I made sure I took time photographing ZONE 1, i.e., The Underground's various Tube Stations in order, allowing you making smart choices and intelligent decisions where you should decide staying via close to a station with full escalators and lifts access or if, you're absolutely sadistic, i.e., choosing becoming a glutton for punishment-hoofing up and down a PLETHORA of staircases!!!! My discoveries are: The Green Park Tube, i.e., Buckingham Palace's exit has COMPLETE escalators and lifts access to AND from Heathrow Airport should you decide not riding the Heathrow Express Train to Paddington Tube Station . . . Meanwhile, St. James, aka Circle Line, Elephant & Castle, the Victoria Line, and parts of Piccadilly have a PLETHORA of staircases with "some" or NO access to lifts; moreover, the corridors between the different Tube lines requires you hoofing underground a l-o-n-g walking distance! Therefore, please do your due diligence reading ALL the signs I photographed in order, reserving your hotel via London Tube Station-my recommendation . . . Reiterating, London Tube Station has full escalators and lifts access to Heathrow Airport; however, with ALL the hoofing I walked today, I prefer riding BUS #35-Shoreditch TRANSFERRING TO BUS #205-Paddington via Primrose Street, i.e., Spitalfields Market in order, avoiding hoofing with your luggage in tow because riding the Tube IS NOT EXPEDIENTLY FAST due to egregiously walking l-o-n-g distances underground. read more

Public transportation at its' finest! You would honestly be a fool to rent a car while visiting London! The London Underground is the most economical, convenient, and cleanest form of transportation that I've ever taken. Also known as the "tube", this iconic train will virtually transport you anywhere within London (and beyond). I took the tube all over London last year during my visit, and it really left me wondering why my state hasn't adopted such advancements in public transit. To access the tube, you'll need to purchase an Oyster card. The Oyster card can be easily reloaded at most train stations and you can also use it to take other forms of transit (like the rail and buses which are also really great for maneuvering around the city). The tube also connects to other train lines which makes it easy to get into Downtown London. I stayed in Stratford and it was easy to connect to the Underground. The trains come frequently so you don't have to wait forever, and they are kept immaculately clean. The prices are pretty reasonable considering how expensive taxis and car rentals are. They have train maps on the train so that you can keep track of your next stop. It's amazing how advanced London's transportation system is compared to the US. Hoping that one day we'll be able to catch up. Until then, I'll just have to enjoy it when I visit. read more

I've been on Subway systems all across the world, and nowhere compares to London Underground, yes it isn't perfect. There are strikes, there are delays, many stations are old, some beautiful yet some needing refurb and carrying a never-ending total of steps, but the London Underground is arguably the most iconic light rail system in the world. It took travelling across alternatives in other major cities and countries to realise how good London has got it especially considering it is the oldest Underground system in the world, and Baker Street is the oldest station in the world that is still used to this day. The beauty of some stations is worth the visit alone. Hopping on the tube is not just the right way to get around London if you live/work here, but it's also a tourist experience, something you go to London and say you've done. A fun fact is, despite the name only 45% of the tube is actually in Underground tunnels Fares are remarkably good value for money especially when paired with a contactless card or oyster, you can even add your railcard to get 1/3 off fares when using an Oyster card. £7.40 to travel anywhere in Zone 1 and 2 with unlimited travel on bus, Tube, DLR and other services is such a great deal. The route is super easy to follow as well, for extra help feel free to pick up a Map, or there are many apps that exist to help you. It works very well with Citymapper for example, which shows you the times, fares and train changes/times right from the app, you can also modify your access requirements such as a preference to use the tube only / avoid steps etc. Considering how far Underground the network is, it is impressive they have managed to get a mobile or WiFi signal at a good number of stations. The TFL staff can be hit or miss, some I've found to be going above or beyond, others I've found to be the total opposite. There are the occasional gems in the network that make it all a little bit better. I also find the Jubilee line extension platforms to be pretty cool, as they have automated platform doors, this stops anything or anyone from falling onto the platform, not only do they look high-tech, modern and something out of a sci-fi movie but they make everything safer. If you are travelling in London, odds are whether love it or hate it you're going to have to use the London Underground, it's something used by the rich and the poor, the famous and the average Joe. 5* read more

In my admittedly limited travels to date, no transport system has come close to the London Underground (and that includes NYC's metro lines). With a map that's fairly easy to read and a fleet of subway cars running at a near constant pace, you'll usually get where you need to go with time to spare and without incident while riding what is affectionately known locally as the Tube. There are exceptions to this, of course. I've been stuck in the Underground during delays, and once that happens there's not much to be done other than to wait for things to get moving again. Worse than the waiting when this happens are the hot temperatures created by being underground with numerous other people, in a vehicle that traditionally does not have air conditioning (the windows are lowered to create a breeze for riders). Honestly, the temperatures are literally the only downside of the London Underground, particularly during the summer. Layers will be your friend if you plan on traveling by Tube a lot! But once you know how to dress comfortably, you'll do just fine. Still, despite my complaints above, I would trade pretty much any transit system I've ridden to date for the London Underground. Sure, you'll probably be warm no matter what and will be fighting for space during peak hours, but really - think about how many people travel in this city each day. It can't be helped, and it will beat paying for a cab or potentially sitting in a bus waiting for traffic to move. A few final thoughts: I like others recommend an Oyster card if you plan to use the Tube; it will be easier and cheaper than buying tickets. If you see a newspaper sitting around, feel free to pick it up and read it; the reuse of the newspapers is a long standing tradition. Finally, keep the chatter to a minimum during your ride if you want to fit in and avoid the looks of exasperated locals. Happy travels! read more

"The Tube". At first glance the overall map of the system looks like a whiteboard onto which colored spaghetti strands were thrown, and then populated with such names as Bushey, Chorleywood, Ickenham, and Cockfosters. But upon further study and much rumination, it can be deciphered. However, we discovered that yes, it is possible to be at the right station, right track, right time, and still get on the wrong train. But it is undoubtedly an incredible transportation system when used by the cognoscenti. I wonder why it's called "The Oyster", a bivalve mollusk? But I digress. As I recall, an All-Day Pass cost about 7 Pounds, a pound being worth $1.21 that day. Certainly an excellent deal if you want to go places and do things as we did. As Essex folk we don't travel into London on a regular basis but, when we do, we always park up in The Minories car park and travel in by tube. Recently we were flabbergasted by the complexity of the ticket machines until, thanks to a helpful member of the station staff, were told of the use of contactless credit/debit cards. As he said, it works out cheaper. He was right. Touch the sensor as you go to the platform and, remember, touch it as you leave the station. SO EASY. One thing I noticed is that the trains run so frequently and the station staff have upped their customer skills. So much more friendly, smiley and helpful. I believe this attitude changed during, and since, the London Olympics. Such a great helpfulness helping our tourist trade. read more

How else would you get around? I took public transit everyday for over a week and I had no problems. The network is very extensive. For that reason alone, it can get a bit confusing. Google Maps definitely helps. But the trains and buses were pretty frequent. None of them were late. The Oyster Card always worked. Its pricing is based on zones. It has automated gates/turnstiles. Station workers were mostly friendly, some were trying to get rid of you. Get an Oyster Card! It's so convenient. The deposit is only £5. I did pay double when I took the Gatwick Express for my first trip. It wasn't worth double for a nonstop train, when the regular train stops only 3 times. I could've waited. There are different rates based on when you use it. So if you take the Tube or bus from 6:30 - 9:30AM on a weekday, the fare is 50% more. I guess this solves some of the congestion problems for Londoners. TTC needs to learn from any other world class city. read more

Coming from a city that has a transit system that doesn't work, this was a dream. I was happy to know that no matter where I needed to get in this city I was able to find a nearby station and get to where I needed within mere minutes. Yes, it is true what other people have said, the tube can be an undesirable place to be at times, it gets extremely hot in some parts, rush hour is bad (but so is rush hour in any other city), and I found it confusing by getting on the wrong train more than once. But the swiftness of the system that kind of outweighs every possible downside you can think of here. Pair the tube with the CityMapper app and it's an unstoppable team. At least that is what I did and I was able to not look so much like a tourist. I also made sure to snatch myself an Oyster Card prior to my arrival. That made it a much more easy experience for me. read more

Living in California, the land where you have earthquakes with breakfast, having a subway system is close to impossible to have. Yes, there are many public modes of transport, but none as convenient like the ones I've seen in New York, Rome, and now London. When traveling to new countries, I'm always nervous about driving, which is why I picked Rome last year and London/Amsterdam this year. No driving needed to see the main attractions! In London, their subway is called the London Underground, which is referred to as The Tube. If you're going on a one-way trip to 1 destination, then you can just buy a ticket. But, if you're going to be in town for a few days or weeks, make sure to get the Oyster card. It's basically a contactless, refillable card that you use to enter AND EXIT the station. I stress "EXIT" because you need to make sure you swipe out. Honestly, it's hard to do unless you're following someone, and just forget. Just make sure you do, otherwise, you'll be charged extra. You can also use other contactless solutions like your phone and some credit cards. They system itself is extremely convenient. While there are a few different lines, getting to each lines is fairly easy. You might have to walk a bit to get to the next one, but if you do some research and know your stops, it's pretty simple. The cars can be a hit or miss. Some are clean and some could use some work. Of course, with rush hour, the main Picadilly line will be crowded while the other lines, not so much. There are a few map apps out there and I just picked one and downloaded it to my phone. Made it a lot easier. Most of the actual stations were clean and some were huge, with some of them having a multitude of shops. The signs were easy to follow which made going to another line, or even the proper exit, a breeze. read more

I took the tube/subway to/from my hotel, which was near the airport. Having to buy a ticket wasn't that confusing, but if you are just staying overnight, most likely you will just buy the single ride (which was about $6.50 converted) or the day pass (which is over $17, but has unlimited rides until the next morning). The machines accept credit cards. If you have a contactless credit card that works, you can tap it at the turnstile for a way cheaper fee (I tried mine but it didn't work so I'm not sure if it needs to be setup?). If you are staying multiple days, you should get this Oyster card since the fares are cheaper too. The signage and maps are very good, each train has maps as wallpaper basically, and there are announcements every stop of the station and direction. Depending on the train, it could be old or new, and most of the stations are pretty old and gritty. read more

This system will take you to the depths of London, where the mole people live and other dangerous creatures might take you away. If you're able to deal with that, this system will take you all over London! The deeper you get, the warmer it becomes, as there were a few months where I felt like I might pass out. Thankfully it didn't come to that. It connects all the underground lines, and believe me, there are a few. It's a pretty good system and pretty easy to navigate. Can't complain that much. read more

I will use railway here since it's so "British lol. But I've used the subway for a long time as a mode of transportation back in New York.. and I tell ya, the London Underground was quite surprising to me. I had to comment and say something to my hubby the night before leaving London and we were visiting London Bridge. Of course, I'm the worst when it comes to navigation.. So I have to rely on him for directions including the metro, hence the underground routes. Lol. But here's the deal, it is pretty impressive. I've noticed that when you do transfers.. you never really have to wait longer than 3 minutes or more for the next train to come. Imagine that? Not even transfers.. in general... all their trains come and go just like that. So come to think of it, there shouldn't be any news of violence on the ramps of any London stations, because no one person would have the reason stay longer than 5 minutes to wait for their train. No fear of a predator or crazy person harassing them. So impressive. And the rides were really nice, smooth and the trains were extremely clean. The trains and the ramps were well lit. All the escalators were working, as well as the exits and entrances. Very well informative, both on signs , overhead announcements, even the overall temperature of the trains and stations were well regulated. London is pretty quite diverse, but the people were very well mannered. No one was shouting at each other, no one was harassing anyone, everyone was just minding their own business. It is hard to imagine how smoothly the London Underground runs. It is an incredibly complex system. Yet, easily understood by the traveler. The first thing we also try to do is to get an up- to-date tube map. We thought we would purchase the 2-day visitor card; but, when we arrived at the Kilburn Park Station, we were told by staff to just use a credit card with "tap and pay," and we would receive the lowest fare. This was extremely easy. We each could use our credit cards on the tube as well as on the buses. We found the underground easy to navigate. We really like the overhead signs that tell you how long of wait you have for the trains to come. We found the stations and the cars to be very clean. If there was anything that was disconcerting it was the fact that the underground is still not that user friendly if you have any sort of handicap. Sometimes, it felt as if we had walked to the next station. I realize that this is an aging underground and that they are trying to be more accommodating. We thoroughly enjoyed using the underground to get around the city. read more

I come from Manhattan and had stayed in London 2 years. I had to say that London tube in some extend is far better than New York metro. First of all, London tube is easy to understand. Little know about London route as tourists are, but you don not have to worry about taking wrong direction, as there are many understandable map that the train will going through all over a station, the digital screens on station show how many minutes next train will approach (usually maximum 5 minutes) and the final stop about the train( I usually rely on it to differentiate the direction). Still confuse? Do not worry. You can ask ticket office or assistant who stand on platform( in some station, assistant only appear at peak time) As to peak time, 6:30 to 9 am and 4 to 7pm in weekdays will change a little higher. If you travel a lot within one day and reached a certain amount of fare you will not be charged any more. Why doesn't every major city have one? St. Petersburg, Paris, Washington DC, even the Big Apple has a fast-moving underground train. But what about LA? Too spread out, you say. Too diverse, you say. Too expensive, you say. Well I say BULLOCKS! LA leadership needs to get their heads out from their suntanned asses and make "the Tube" a new reality. But then, anything "efficient" just doesn't seem to jive with the LA scene, does it? Name anything efficient in LA...Come on, anything... You see, can't say anything, can you? This fast, reliable, inexpensive people-mover can get anyone around London in no time. And once you learn the ropes, baby, there ain't nothin' that can hold you back from seeing everything in this city! Besides the closeness of Victoria Station to anywhere in the City, my favorite stop was Baker St (yes, that one) Station where artistic tilers installed a Sherlock Holmes silhouette complete with deer-stalker hat and meerschaum pipe, artfully reminding all that 221B Baker St is nearby. Breaking News! My niece is on Yelp! She joined and posted her first review! In honor of my cool niece (who by the way just made her first new car purchase), I am dedicating this review to her. The Tube (like my niece) is cool. It's efficient and doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how in the Hell to get from point A to point B. It's so easy in fact that my niece can even vouch for how simple it is to use as we both utilized it for two summers in a row while making excursions to the British Museum or pick up crap pizza from Pizza Hut (it's the only thing she would eat). The Tube's stations aren't beautiful (like Moscow's) or make fashion statements (like Paris), but they are truly a part of London and add to the city's character. If you are arriving via Heathrow and headed to central London do not even hesitate and skip the cab line and grab a ride on the tube. Cheap (not like my niece) and awesome (like my niece) way to get into town. read more

Londoners have it pretty good. The world's oldest underground railway can take them from one end of town to the other and all points in between. I've seen much worse and very few better. Washington's Metro, Atlanta's Metra, New York's subway, Chicago's elevated, Boston's T, Paris Metro and RER, I've ridden all of these. None compare to the simplicity of the Tube. Colored lines darting to and fro, up and down. Even one in a circle. It's usually pretty easy to navigate from one to the other. I was going to make this five stars, but I have to take back two stars because the summer months on the Underground are bad. Way too warm, enough so that you probably want to bring an extra shirt. Opening the various vents and windows helps some, but not enough to make a serious difference. If you're dragging some luggage with you, all I can say is "Good luck." Some stations have step-free access, but most do not have an escalator or a lift ("elevator" in American). Sadly, they haven't brought cell coverage underground. It would be nice to have repeaters, even if only on the busier platforms. Unlike Paris, where they say there is a station every 500 meters, there are a few zones in London where there isn't a station for well over a mile (Bermondsey, I'm talking to you). Every weekend has some sort of 'planned engineering works,' that closes anything from several stations to an entire line. I know they're trying to prepare for the Olympics, but good luck until then! Very easy to use public transportation that makes getting around fairly on time while giving you a flavor of London, um, smells and all. Once you go down the stairs into the underground, it seems everyone is in a rush so you should know where you're going and pay attention to the signage. Oh, and once you buy your ticket and go through the turnstile, be sure to hold on to the ticket as you'll need the stub to exit at your stop. I almost made the mistake of tossing it in the black hole of my bag, never to be found again. If you're planning to use the Tube all day, consider buying a pass. Otherwise, it's perfectly fine to pay as you go. No pictures to share as I was too busy trying NOT to look like a lost tourist but failing miserably I'm sure. read more

Best metro in the world. Clean, fast, efficient. It's the best and most economical way of getting around London. You can get an all day pass and ride all day or even a weekend pass and ride for a weekend. It's worth the money as all the popular spots are within walking distance of the tube. It's unfair to judge a transport system from a tourist's perspective. And I'll admit I get very annoyed when people come to my home city (Washington, DC) and proclaim the Metro is the greatest thing ever (it's not). That said, the Tube worked flawlessly during my trip, so I really don't have much to complain about. It's an incredibly extensive system that can get you all over the city and out to Heathrow. Paired with the Citymapper app, I was able to get around on it without ever looking at a Tube map once. One thing to note is that even though the Tube now accepts Apple Pay and Android Pay, it doesn't work if you don't have a British credit card set up on it. I liked the idea of paying only for what I needing and not needed to worry about topping up or keeping track of money on the Oyster, but alas it didn't work with my Chase cards. read more

Honestly, I don't really know why everyone thinks the tube is AWESOME. It's definitely not bad, but it closes quite early for London's night life, it is always under construction in one line or another, and it's often overly crowded and the signs are confusing at times. Also, it takes way too long to get from one place to another. Kensington to Covet Gardens is like 45+ minutes! I managed to get through it in the few days I was there, and by the end I got it right but the station closest to my hotel (the reason why I booked there) was still closed, so it was really inconvenient the whole time I was there. The Tube is also a little bit pricey, but I suppose every thing in London is pricey so there's not much else to say about this. I like that it's available, just don't think it's very fast or convenient all the time. read more

This is the Granddaddy of em all. Very clean and cushioned seat...take notes NYC. I also like those combo tickets that allow you to use The tube along with The National Rail system. The underground arrival boards are a smart touch. There's also an app for that. Which means you can stop at the pub across the street from the station and sip a draft while peeking at your smart phone. Then hustle underground when your train is near. "Mind the gap!!!" The London Underground aka "The Tube" is a public transportation system in London. The first section of The Tube opened in 1863, making this the oldest underground subway system in the world. The Tube is so easy to use in London that you don't need to rent a car or take a taxi. There seems to be a station near every major tourist attraction in the city so you don't ever need to walk more than a few blocks to catch The Tube. The system serves over 270 stations and is the fourth longest metro system in the world with over 250 miles of track. We were able to take the Tube from the Heathrow airport to our hotel much cheaper than a taxi. I'm not sure if there was a special car to go on with luggage. Somebody made a comment while we were on the tube about putting our luggage on a rack. We didn't see the overhead rack that they were talking about so we just shrugged our shoulders and continued to act like "stupid American tourists". In comparison to the NY Subway, Paris Metro and the Amsterdam Metro The Tube is very user friendly. Just purchase your ticket and use the map to find out which line you need to use. The Tube is super fast, very reliable and very inexpensive. TIP: Purchase The Oyster Card to save money on Tube fare! The Oyster Card is a plastic smart card you can purchase instead of paper tickets. You initially pay a £5 deposit when you purchase the Oyster card, but the money is reimbursed as well as any balance when you return the card at The Tube station. read more
