MacCallum More turned out to be a pleasant find tucked away in Chase City! We took the tour of the Hudgins House and their museum with Kat, the director and our tour guide for the day, and we thoroughly enjoyed it all. Walking around the gardens and taking pictures afterwards was also a delight. I recommend visiting this charming spot to anybody who appreciates gardens and local history!

There are over 30 (and I did not see everything today) statues from all over the world and 18th/19th century (even a few 16/17th century) that are breathtaking! If I lived closer, I might consider a membership to save costs, but I live too far currently to justify that. The cafe food was mid, and again too expensive. The pricing for me knocks a star off, but if you've never been and are prepared to spend a couple hundred bucks for the day on a family of 4, you'll probably enjoy!

It was full of riddles that you get to solve to unlock passwords. My daughter and I solved a few and were also stumped by quite a few lol. We could totally come back to play, do that whole room again, and really enjoy ourselves. The dome was down this time, but im sure we will come back and try to catch it. While the museum was fun, I felt like i was expecting maybe a few more activities then what they had, but either way the kids still enjoyed the activities and were tired at the end. They have a butterfly house outside the main exhibit that you can walk a minute to and I loved that ( even though I was stressed all the way out that I would step on a butterfly). The butterfly house was my favorite part and I loved the fish they had inside. There also was a train caboose parked and we were able to walk through that. It was a few miles from our AirBNB, so while we had to drive, there's a large parking lot right across the street. I'm not sure if parking is normally free, but it was on this particular Saturday. No one was monitoring the gate or could figure out how to pay, so we didn't. I *think* the sign said it was normally $5 on days they do charge or monitor. VERY reasonable. The museum itself is FREE unless you want to see an IMAX movie, which is reasonably priced. If you're into dinosaurs, plants, geology, or natural science in general, you'll enjoy yourself here, but the museum definitely adds a local flare and incorporates NC history and geography. While the museum is kid-friendly, it is not kid-focused. It is family focused and for all ages. My husband and I are child-free and had a great time. Of course, we are nerds and had science classes together in college. I do think this is a great museum for kids who are school aged and able to read well and ask questions. It is probably not the best option for toddlers or preschoolers when it comes to museums. The museum hosts birthday parties, and a group was there for that- what a fun idea! If you visit, plan to spend a morning or afternoon here- it definitely takes a few hours to see everything but not the full day.

While the tobacco industry goes back earlier, it is just about the time after the Civil War ends that it really gets interesting, as soldiers coming home chew (or is that "chaw"), smoke, or sniff tobacco. Washington Duke capitalized on it. And now... there's a university and gardens named after the family - with a top notch basketball program, of course! The tour is about an hour. There are other building to see from the outside. Can ask as many questions as you like!
