The conductor was graceful and fully in command, with a lightness of touch and humor that shone through the deeply serious selections. A highlight was the stunning and goosebump-raising performance of Katherine Chi, playing the forceful and difficult Totentanz with athletic passion and strength, as if she were channeling the great master himself. The audience was entranced and very silent as it listened in awe and attentiveness. It was Lincoln Center quality without all the traffic and expense. The gorgeous Steinway piano was a treat to hear. The first violin was magestic and I loved the brio of the cymbals player, who brought out the rock star quality of Lizst's emotional tone. I would have loved the harp to be closer to the audience, as it was drowned out by the crystal clear horns. All in all, I am extremely impressed and happy to be in a community that fosters such excellence in music!

It's a pretty decent experience if you're into retro arcade games the price for all day play in the…read morearcade games is pretty reasonable but the offering is kind of limited they had about 40-50 machines there but not all were working when we visited which is understandable breakdowns happen, and in some cases the cabinets do not match the game that's actually in them. They advertise retro consoles but that offering is pretty anemic 1 NES with Mario Bros / Duck Hunt, Atari Flashback system and a Sega Genesis Flashback system is all that is offered and by looking at an older review it has been that way for about a year so that is pretty disappointing to say the least. In a separate room they have an air hockey table and some pinball but those require pay to play and are not part of the play all day which did kind of feel like for lack of a better term a ripoff since I been to other similar establishments where it was just part of the package. They seem to be focusing heavy on their VR experiences which require you to purchase individual tickets to use and we didn't really use them since we came for the arcade portion. Overall we had fun, it was about a 40 minute drive and we stayed about 3 hours and had fun if you're into VR experiences it is probably a lot of fun but I probably will not be back unless they add more games or consoles.

A shining star in north Alabama. Philanthropists Allan and Debra Jenkins had a vision to transform…read morea boarded up building in a neglected part of town into a performing arts center to rejuvenate the area. They used their own time, energy and finances to renovate the building and opened to the public in 2007. After several years, Mrs. Jenkins, through a series of occurrences, realized that local children and adults with special needs can rarely, if ever, take performance art classes. My daughter, for example, tried a local performance art studio but didn't fit in because she wasn't intellectually on par with the others. The Jenkins' ended up starting a day program for adults with special needs and an after school program for children with special needs. My daughter enjoys it so much that her acting classes are the highlight of her week. The program is 5 stars -- the participants all love it and there's simply nothing else like it around. Special needs kids and adults have such pure hearts and are accepting of one another as they are. If only the rest of the world can be that way! The productions are top-notch and the facility itself superb, complete with a 300-seat theater and state-of-the-art technology, such as closed captioning above the stage. Shows are open to the public, too; it's not just for participants' family and friends. In addition to the special needs productions, they have special concerts and events throughout the year... even Billy Bob Thornton, who is a supporter of Merrimack.

Typically, they perform in Lee High School (both the old and new versions), and go out of their way to put on high-quality, professional productions, often of plays other groups won't tackle..."The Civil War"; "Les Misérables"; "Jekyll and Hyde"; and the aforementioned "Sweeney," which they revisited in 2009, are prime examples. However, they've done wonderful productions of standards, as well (e.g. "Oliver!"; "Oklahoma!"; "I Do! I Do!"...and even some without exclamation points). Recently, IMP started presenting non-musicals in Lee's Black Box Theatre (where the latter, two-person musical was held), with well-received performances of "The Foreigner," "Driving Miss Daisy," and more. Here's looking towards their soon-to-come 25th season with great expectations. Expectations that will be fulfilled.

The Festival and Games will take place from 9:00 a.m. to about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and are held at the 1,500-seat Amphitheatre, all the way down the peninsula past the golf course and marina...it's basically the last structure on EH Drive and on the right). For a mere $7.00 per adult, or $3.00 for bratlings, you can watch the caber tossing and quickly race out of the caber's way; gawk at various clan tents; check out the items for sale, including weaponry (careful, lest you get kilt); savor anything from bridies to, if you're brave, haggis; and perhaps even hobnob with a Scottish Terrier or two. And they don't talk to just anybody. There's always plenty to eat and, weather permitting, plenty to DO. In addition to the aforementioned foods, try a delish Scotch egg...but they go QUICKLY, so hurry!...or a meat pie. You might try hitting them up with a bit of HP Sauce. A great experience for families or groups of friends, bagpipers or not.
