August and John were very welcoming to all the students and, after a short intro, we got to work. There were women of all ages and fitness levels, and all were really getting into it and learning. August introduced the right amount of stress to the training as we progressed and introduced real-world scenarios, which was extremely helpful. When I told a friend of mine (as I was showing off my new bruises :)) that it was 2.5 hours per class, she questioned "Why so long? They should do like 1-hour instruction & practicum, no?" My response was that I felt part of the training was to put you in stress mode and make you fight when tired. Again, real world. We took short water breaks, but everyone was excited to get back on the mat! I travel alone a lot for work and have had been in some situations I couldn't avoid, so I know the skills I learned (and will continue to practice) will be something I can draw on should I need to. Should I decide to become a practitioner, I'm sure I'll be coming here. Looking forward to their street training class, whenever the next one comes up. Thanks August!

I've never trained in any discipline of martial arts, so I was pretty nervous. The atmosphere of the gym is nonjudgmental and very welcoming. The coaches have everyone's best interests at heart and do an amazing job at making sure you're learning in a good environment. I don't have any little ones, but I've heard from numerous people that their kids classes are just as top-notch as the adult ones. Although it's a small gym with only one mat, the togetherness of the group makes it work. I plan to train with these fine people for many years to come. Then in order to cancel, it takes a month before they do so and you have to attend X amount of classes during that canceled month in order for them to stop charging you. That sounds very intimidating. Second of all, the students were very verbally aggressive and not anything like my previous relations with jiu jitsu. The coach was fine but constanly had to tell his students to calm down. He was a nice guy but I wish he had made a better environment for his students.

So I dropped in at their new location which was very impressive. Spoke with the owner (coral belt) Gigi, who was such a nice person and invited me to try out a class. Being 51 and a purple belt in a new school can be very intimidating. Plus I was coming back from a long layoff due to recovery from two work related surgeries.The students at Alliance were friendly, very respectful, and understanding of my circumstances.
