I was at an auction with this auction company recently. I drove over an hour for this auction and…read morewaited all day to specifically bid on stone slabs. Right before the stone slab bid, I over heard the auctioneer talk to another person at the auction, a lady with very short brown hair, that the auctioneer wanted the stone slabs coming up for bid and the lady said she wanted one too, there were seven or eight of them. After further discussion, it was obvious the auctioneer and the lady were making arrangements to share the bid. When the bidding started, I made a bid and the auctioneer addressed me and waved me off - obviously the auctioneer thought I was his friend, she was right behind me, and didn't want me/her to bid the items up. Following, the bid was awarded very quickly and I was not allowed to bid at all. Right after the bid, I voiced my concerns and asked the auctioneer if he saw me and he said no - I was literally three feet away from him and yelled out my bid -- and he acknowledge my bid, waving me off. This action was highly unethical. The auctioneer should allow everyone to bid and not 'rig' the auction, selling an item for his own use. Also, prearranged negotiations of an auctioneer should not be made before a bid. This auction service is being deceitful and underhanded to the family selling the estate - cheating them out of money. Again, this is unprofessional and fraudulent

A signature drink was offered as well as beer, wine, seltzers and water. The staff is friendly and approachable but not pushy. Questions were answered without making you uncomfortable. We met and chatted with staff and other guests. The musical guest @ishensemble was really good! Great jazzy feel! It's always nice listening to live music when you can just tell that they are enjoying themselves while playing their music. While the bathrooms were in the common lobby and around the corner they were clean and nice. I would attend again.

Throw in some other random art and it really is a nice collection for the auction, something for everyone. Had a very nice charcuterie table and a good open bar selection. I thought the Handlebar custom cocktail was too gingery but they had a good selection of craft beers and some nice wines as well. Also saw Mayor Spencer looking around as well. Always enjoy exploring their art auctions and cocktail hours. Oh and the band @ishensemble was really good!

The regular bi-weekly Thursday night auctions, as well as the scheduled estate sales, always have a rollicking mix of items.... all jumbled together. A Chippendale chair might be auctioned just before or just after a pair of old golf shoes. You just never know! I'll bet there's not a lot that the Masseys haven't sold over the years! With the recent scandals at Ivey-Selkirk, it's hard to find a good auction house in the area, but the Masseys are doing a great job of picking up the slack without taking the fun out of their jobs. They like the upscale estates, but aren't averse to selling old farm equipment or store liquidations, either -- they just good-naturedly tackle the job at hand, and put on a really good show while doing so. The audiences are a hoot, too. You see a LOT of local antique dealers looking for bargains, lots of toothless Fagin types and hairy ZZ Top wannabes, and everything in between. Doesn't matter who you are or what you look like, though, because the Masseys like everyone, whether you're a bargain-hunter, an antique dealer, or an upscale collector, and they make it a point to entertain. Even if you aren't buying anything, it's fun just to watch the sale! That said, I've gotten a lot of magnificent pieces of furniture at Massey Auctions; some of it just reasonable and some of it for a song. I've also gotten caught up in the fun and gone home with a few nonsensical impulse buys, but that's one of the hazards of going. Don't go to one of the Thursday night auctions expecting Sotheby's. These are rapid-turnaround events held at the Maplewood American Legion Hall ... but just because the venue isn't tony doesn't mean there's nothing good for sale! The Masseys are honest, too, so if something is a reproduction, they will say so right from the outset, or if they aren't sure of the provenance of an item, they'll tell you that too. Come prepared, because the sales are cash- or check-only. You should go! You'll have a great time!
