It is like "summer camp" in that meal times are 8, 12, and 6, and you sleep in cabins, most of which are with roommates. That said, I have a specific bed set up at home and worried about comfort as I also have a hard time sleeping away from home. My worry was for naught as the mattress though appearing quite standard was amazingly comfortable without any extra pad from me. I was warm even in very cool nights with the blanket I brought plus the wool blend one provided. Meals were a good variety for options when ingredients did not appeal for main dishes. Everything was delicious! Plenty of healthy food all week! Another reviewer said this was a singular view years ago that was negative about the U.S. and I did not find this during my session at all. I mean, you are in Maine, and unless you're a work study student you're paying a good sum of money to attend, so socioeconomic diversity is not rampant. Also the location is so remote and costly to get to, even work study people likely are not overly diverse in many ways. There were plenty of varieties of views here, though, when I attended. We had great dinner conversations! As for complaints about internet/phone access, it is well advertised that it is "country" WiFi and that cell access is extremely limited. I'm not sure why that is such a critique when you go knowing this very clearly. I had the access I needed for the most part. Sure, a text before bed couldn't happen from my cabin yet we adjusted times to keep in touch for my family is all. It was fantastic that I could be totally away from work like a vacation is supposed to be anyway! My workshop session has set me up with exactly what is was described as intended: a mindful stitching practice. We learned methods and were given myriad choices of paths to this and also for how the practice can inform actual fiber art for those who pursue that...in fact I went mostly to learn self-care using this art medium and left aspiring to grow in fiber art! Christine Mauersberger led an inspiring workshop that exceeded all expectation! I'm excited for my stitching work and have more avenues by which to approach it than I might have from a full college semester in a fiber arts program.

It smells like Christmas because of the spruces, and this is so fitting because it feels like Christmas. Only better, because it's summer and there is an ocean and crushed shell beaches and studios jam packed with supplies and amazing, home cooked, kick ass food for eaters of all types, and so many creative, funny, encouraging artists and craftspeople that you will never want to leave. The fearless leader, Stuart, is just about the nicest guy you'll ever meet. A wonderful and quirky sense of humor and a damn good poet, to boot. Candy is helpful, kind and efficient. And all the staff are hard working and friendly. I haven't felt so well tended to, creatively inspired and completely at ease since I was a little 'un. Forget Disney world. This is where dreams come true.

On a very small plot of "downtown" every summer the town places Everette Knowlton's (1901-1978)…read morehandcrafted small scale village of freestanding structures. Modeled from a picture of the "perfect village" beginning in 1947. Following his death, the actual residents of Stonington each safely house one of the modeled structure through the winter, then each Summer Season they are put back on display on a small plot of park land along Main Street. We enjoyed watching a couple of families and the young'ns walk the miniature "grassed" streets. Each child couriousily kneeling and peeking insides and each with a comment or observation. Very cute, in fact, so cute, we had to do the same when the little giants cleared out - leave the Little Village and it's Villagers safe and sound.

He is a well known photographer and also has five photography publications to his credit. He was also mentioned and recognized by Ansel Adams which is quite impressive. His photography really captures the raw nature and beauty of Maine and if you are looking for a beautiful piece of art for yourself, I would check this place out. FYI - There is also a number of other artists highlighted at the gallery including his daughter Joanne Parent which does amazing work also.

My husband and I stumbled across this store and loved it. Many stores in downtown Bar Harbor start to feel the same but The Beehive has a different buzz about it. The interior was quaint and classic but it also had a clean, modern flair to it. I spent most of my time looking at many whimsical products they carry from Fred (aka Genuine Fred) before settling on two potholders with sassy sayings like, "Recipe for Disaster." We also looked at hip crewel pillows, candles and souvenirs. Also, we enjoyed the pretty "Greetings from Acadia Nat'l Park" mural. The employee was friendly and if my suitcase wasn't busting at the seams I would have spent even more money here. This just might "bee" my very favorite store in Bar Harbor.

We visited this preserve on our way back from Rockland, and it was worth the detour. What seems to…read morebe another trail in the middle of nowhere is actually filled with over a dozen large-scale wooden sculptures by Maine-born artist Bernard Langlais. The pieces are beautiful and all found around the preserve's entrance, so you don't have to walk much to see them all. There's a cute visitor center with postcards and other things for sale, exhibits, and even a short film to learn more about the artist's life. The young woman working the exhibit was so kind and welcoming--she gave us a quick history lesson about the space and the art. We learned that many of the sculptures will eventually become one with the Earth due to the elements and Langlais's wish not to repair them. The art preserve is free, but there is a $10 suggested donation.

DO NOT GO ON THE WOODLAND TRAIL! My husband and I are outside people. We hike, camp, take our dog…read moreto the woods every day. The sculpture path was lovely, but the woodland trail was the most miserable walk either of us has ever taken. We are not stupid. Bugs live in the woods. But this was horrible. We put on deep woods bug spray before we left and still spent the entire time desperately swatting away mosquitoes. At one point we both had to run after being bitten by bees. I now have a swollen bleeding bite on my calf. It was disgusting. Definitely go. The sculpture park was lovely. Just stay out of the woods.
