The quality of their produce is top notch - for example, one Sunday lunch my sister bought a whole lamb shoulder (over 2 kilos) to roast for a few hours. Between the five of us, we ate THE WHOLE THING. It was just that good. I don't think I could ever describe lamb as being more-ish, but none of us could stop. HG Walter offer a comprehensive selection of meats including the lesser known cuts, game and special items every week (seasonal animals, specialty meats such as rare-breed pork etc.). They have a large variety of sausages (usually more than 10), really tasty burgers (particularly their lamb and mango one), and some pre-prepped stuff such as marinaded chicken breasts, kebabs, and prepared quail. Also, if you ask for them, they'll provide you with very cheap bones/carcasses for stock making which makes some damn tasty stock. They also sell eggs, some pretty decent local vegetable produce, some cheeses and deli items (a small pate selection including their excellent pate campagne, olives, olive oils, and a variety of condiments from companies such as Tracklements and Seggiano). Although the place is always busy (they're open until 7 which is perfect for the walk home), as mentioned by Vikki the line diminishes very quickly. The staff are great, they're always friendly and helpful. If you're not quite sure which cut to buy, they'll ask you how you're cooking it and will offer an appropriate suggestion. Likewise, if they're out of stock of one thing, they'll suggest an appropriate replacement (and not just upsell more expensive cuts). Shopping here is an absolute pleasure. In terms of price, it's not cheap cheap but cheaper than the some of the big name butchers in London. Their cheaper cuts are great value when you consider the quality - the belly pork is one of my staples at 7 quid a kilo and I find I can just about afford it on my PhD stipend. In conclusion: as I said before, I'd happily travel across town to shop here. A very enjoyable shopping experience and that's before you've even tasted their food. One last tip: their Scotch Eggs are absolutely OUT OF THIS WORLD. Trust me. The crunchiness of the breadcrumbs, tastiness of the oniony-sausagey inside and the soft egg. They're a total steal.

Skewers of marinated meat, stuffed chicken breats, gorgeous varieties of sausages (I can reccomend the chilli, but be prepared for some big heat!), and a chock deli section complete with luxury cheese and unbelievable pork pies. Also shelving behind with top quality dry goods and jars, and a small area of organic vegetables outside. And if you want a summer treat, get one of their handmade burgers, a ciabatta roll and a barbie. Sheer bliss! My favourites include their sausage selection (8-10 different kinds), especially the 'Welsh Dragon' sausage which has leeks and hot peppers in. Their roast meats are impressive, and the bacon superb. They have a very good BBQ range, including Chinese, Piri Piri and BBQ sauce varieties. Support your local butcher! Their prices are cheaper and their quality is better. Period.

The shop itself is nice and open and doesn't feel cluttered/cramped like a lot of butchers: instead of having a traditional butchery setup with the counter dividing butcher and customer, the most of the meat is displayed in a counter at the front of the shop. It's nice not to feel pinned in; at the same time, it probably makes queuing a bit chaotic during busy periods. There's also a deli section featuring a nice assortment of sauces, condiments, pasta et al. The meat itself is great quality (and all free-range too if you're into that) - I got to try their rib-eye steak and pork chops, both of which were excellent. I could have cut my steak up with a child's arts and crafts scissors, it was deliciously textured; as for the flavour, I would have preferred a touch more mature, but this was definitely one of the best home-cooked steaks I've had. The pork chops I had were also great - hefty and flavourful. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try out anything else, but I'm sure I will do when I move back oop north (hopefully). In terms of price and quality, it's definitely up there with somewhere like HG Walter (my former local) - it's not that much more expensive than the free range selection at a supermarket meat counter, plus they have a decent selection of cheaper cuts too. Things have moved on however and now they are swanky and up market butchers providing good cuts of meat, specializing in particular in providing food for dinner parties and the like. The quality is good and here they also double up as a bit of a café selling drinks and light food for locals. I guess it makes sense, they certainly source lots of fresh and free range meat so why not source free range and organic Coca-Cola, killed humanely after a very nice life in the country. They also sell lots of stuff in jars, jams, preserves, that sort of thing so I suppose a visit here can furnish the larder/cupboard/fridge with a fair few requirements and indulgences too.

Little did we know that it was going to become our favourite place in Hampstead. Each Saturday from 1:00 - 4:00 they offer a complimentary wine tasting. Through this event, we've gotten to know Avie, one of the partners that is responsible for distributing the wine. Avie is incredibly knowledgeable about wine and always makes a wonderful recommendation. He also recommends in-store goods that pair nicely with the wine. I've enjoyed tasting the foie gras, chicken parfait, chirizo, peppercorn salami, etc. - all of which are affordable and available in small portions (100-200 grams). We've also had the opportunity to meet Keiko, who works behind the cheese counter. She is equally as knowledgeable about the cheeses. As you can tell from this review, we've gotten to know the staff - and can't say enough positive things. They are all very helpful, kind, and the quality of goods at the Hampstead Butcher is unmatched. Tip: They have a great selection of Italian reds. I recommend the 2008 Poggiobello Pinot Nero from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. Take home a bottle of this wine and pair it with some Manchego cheese and peppercorn salami.

Desperate barbecuers like myself had to flee to Finchley Road for the Waitrose or brave the "meat" section at the Tesco Express, where I actually once saw meat with maggots in it. No joke. The meat quality here so far is excellent and the butcher clearly takes pride in his work. I got a few kilo of mince for burgers and it was both exceptionally lean (probably 98% I reckon) and tasty. I also picked up two sirloin cuts that were fantastic. Among the best meat I've had ever, including Argentina, Venezuela and Texas. This is now my go-to place for any meats now, Ocado be damned.

My husband likes it almost rare which according to their expertise that's the way to enjoy its full texture and flavour. Many times I have thought of this place as a great idea for a creative fashion photoshoot, it just has such an impact. Possibly it is all the red meat hanging on the window display.

They have award-winning sausages made on site, and also cure their own bacon, and make up their own beef burgers. There's a variety of stuffed or marinated meat, good for the bbq in the summer or for roasting in the winter. They make sausage rolls and pasties, and it's pretty hard to resist when you walk by and smell that baking! They were happy to give me bones for a dog for no charge. Anything you want, they'll get in for you. There's a small selection of produce and chutneys, and some meat bagged up for the freezer. Oh, and there's cheese and ham, too. I may just start sleeping on the floor. And if you go in and say what you're making, they'll give you the right cut of meat and the right size, and then tell you how long to cook it. I think one of these days, they'll just follow me home and cook it up for me. The downside? It's expensive. But you're paying for quality and expertise, which you just don't get at a supermarket. They're open seven days a week, too.

But that didn't mean I had to wait, as he called his colleague out from the back who was happy to assist. I was very pleased with both the service and the quality of the steaks I purchased. I'm a semi-regular here, although I tend to shop here more in the summer when buying for barbecues etc as they have a good range. They also make their own sausages - the pinner porker is great, and they even make pies, pasties and scotch eggs.
