The building was constructed between 1875 and 1878 and designed by Samuel J. F. Thayer in the Second Empire style. In 1975, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it is also a contributing structure to the broader Downtown Providence Historic District. Though the area around it has changed over the years, Providence City Hall remains a constant in downtown Providence. The cast iron and masonry structure witnessed the evolution of Exchange Place into Kennedy Plaza, two hurricanes, and multiple cycles of economic depression and growth. Initially, Providence's municipal government was located in the crowded Market House, across the Providence river. Needing a bigger space, alderman were split on where to put a new city hall. Half of the council lived on the east side of the river, and half on the west, causing a thirty-year struggle over where to put the new government building. Eventually, the west side won and the cornerstone was laid on June 24, 1875. In the 1950s the city's downtown master plan called for the demolition of City Hall, but it was saved and restored, reflecting the city's pride in its historic roots. Many city departments can be found in this building...including Tax collection, Board of Canvassers, Board of Licenses, City Archives, City Council, Public Works, Municipal court, Mayor's office, and much more. I usually go into the building for things related to my tax bill or a few years ago to get my marriage license. Anyway, a beautiful building reminiscing of a French government building in the heart of Providence.

The Hiker was given in 1911 by the Rhode Island chapter of the National organization, representing those volunteers who had participated in the brief expeditions to Cuba and the Phillippines. The statue was apparently originally intended for the veterans' lot at the North Burial Ground...but it is now located in downtown Providence in Kennedy Plaza, with its back to City Hall and the front facing the Federal Courthouse. Many people pass-by without noticing or knowing the significance of this statue....so much history in downtown Providence, it just takes a minute to stop and read.

Considering that it is located in such a busy spot, the statue is in amazing condition. On the stone base, a bronze plaque lists the main theaters of the war - Philippine Islands, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the USA - and Spanish War Veterans. Atop the statue, a determined looking young man stands in the uniform of the day with floppy had and holding his rifle in both hands (not great trigger discipline). Hostilities between Spain and the United States began in the aftermath of the internal explosion of USS Maine ("Remember the Maine!") in Havana Harbor in Cuba, leading to U.S. intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. The war led to the U.S. emerging predominant in the Caribbean region, and resulted in U.S. acquisition of Spain's Pacific possessions. That led to U.S. involvement in the Philippine Revolution and later to the Philippine-American War. 385 Americans were killed (plus 2061 from disease) and 1662 were wounded during the war. Not only…read moreis John Calcagni uncommonly clever, but he is the perfect combination of sensible, empathetic, alarmingly honest, and wonderfully capable of projecting all of these qualities onto the jury. Watching John in Court is a true joy. No one gets to see attorneys immerse themselves so completely in their cases anymore! During your first meeting with John, he lays out for you the many ways that your case could take. Then, he elaborates on how he will redirect, counter, or avoid altogether the varying strategies opposing counselors will use. After having worked with and opposite to more than two thousand attorneys during my 52-year career, I can honestly say that I trust John with my own life as well as (and, more importantly to me) with the lives of my family members. John Calcagni III is the attorney who attorneys call for help!
