It's been a couple years since my last review, and I feel like PP has changed several times over. From changing the menu to offering dinners requiring reservations, to redecorating the inside (more booths and separators), to changing back to breakfast/lunch/brunch (and no dinner), it still feels like they are finding their niche. For a while there, PP was our preferred dinner spot and we would meet other couples there for their amazing steak and pork chop dinners, plus amazing sides, delicious cocktails and lovely desserts. We were always able to get a reservation, and always enjoyed the evening ambiance; service was very good, and food quality was the real clincher - farm to table, perfectly executed and a good value. When they recently decided to stop offering dinner service we were bummed, but we know the economy is having an impact; good food and good ingredients are getting more expensive, and the average diner can't really be spending $50-75 pp for a dinner (with drink, dessert, tax and tip) more than a few times a month. At least we can't. Anyway, now we have switched to brunch! And PP has some amazing options. I was just there last weekend with friends, and we had: -- the burger with fries plus extra sauce for the burger - the person who got this said the burger bun was delicious, burger with toppings was very good, and the pile of fries was so much that she was able to share with the rest of us -- the pastrami hash bowl with a poached egg - the person who got this felt the hash was good but overall the dish was kind of dry, and the egg was slightly over cooked, so there wasn't enough runny yolk to make up for the dryness. -- the eggs benedict - the person who got this considered it a classic with a truly delicious and lemony hollandaise, thick slices of delicious ham and two perfectly cooked eggs complete with dark orange, runny yolks. In fact, the hollandaise was so good it sparked the idea to get an extra side of it to 'dress' the pastrami hash, which was just what that dish needed. Service was great - attentive, friendly, etc - and the atmosphere and energy on a Sunday morning was relaxed but buzzing. We enjoyed espressos and bloody mary's as well. My breakfast (just my food) was approx $30 with tax and tip, and though this might feel high for 'breakfast food' I consider the quality well worth it. read more

Wow! We've been a few times for breakfast, but recently met friends for dinner. They do except reservations, which is great to know and parking in the evening is very easy We had lovely service. The only drawback was we were the table closest to the door, and despite the heavy velvet drapes, it was a bit chilly. I don't t like writing reviews like this, but here we are. I always appreciate when a restaurant wants to spread its wings and try new dishes. Sometimes it's a hit, and sometimes like this time it's a miss. I came for the Lunar New Year menu, planning to order a few dishes and take the leftovers home. I went with the cucumber salad, ramen, and Korean short ribs with rice. Since the weather was a bit dicey, I decided to stay local. First, I have to say the staff was lovely and clearly knew what they were doing. Unfortunately, the food itself just didn't deliver. Every dish was just meh "lacking that deep, satisfying umami. I ate what I could because I was hungry, but the short rib and the pork in the ramen were so tough that even cutting them with a fork and knife was a struggle. And then came the endless chewing I don't want to fight with my food. The cucumber salad had a nice concept with the mix of sour, hot, and cold, but it still fell flat. The ramen was okay, but again, no umami. The short ribs? Same issue. Portion-wise, what I ordered could have easily fed two people, so no complaints there. But despite bringing home leftovers, I'm not sure I even want to eat them and who doesn't like leftovers? I give them props for trying something new, but I hope they refine their culinary voice. The Public Provisions restaurant served us a beautiful meal that was appealing to the palate and eye. We ordered OF Martini which was comprised of Haku Japanese Vodka, Cointreau, passion fruit, vanilla and lime. Which was served with a sampling of Prosecco! This cocktail was so flavorful, smooth and exceptional. For dinner I ordered the Soring Pea Ravioli, which was delicious. My husband ordered the Scallop dish which were perfectly prepared with spring onion and with a perfect sear and fabulous taste. I also ordered the Broken Burrata which could have been a light dinner by itself. It was perfectly prepared asparagus spears, frisée , with lemon ..... oh my ....be still My heart .....we experienced one delicious delicacy after another ! My husband also ordered the calamari which were tender, lightly breaded and served with a tantalizing sauce. He was in heaven. Although this is a modest restaurant in the Rochester Public Market one wouldn't expect the range of professionalism in this fine establishment. Five Stars across the board! We really enjoyed our time at Public Provisions! We went for Valentine's Day and I didn't realize it was a prefix menu! (it was my fault but I wish they said it on the reservations too, instead of just on the website). I don't eat dairy so I knew this wasn't going to be the easiest with prefix, but our waitress made it difficult. She clearly did not know ingredients in the dishes and tried to help, but I was given a dish loaded with butter and it seemed like she was guessing what was in things. I get it was a prefix menu, but she should have talked with the chef. The reason for the five stars is that the food was outstanding! Each dish was unique and delicious. The cocktails, mocktails, and atmosphere were also 10/10. I can't wait to go back to dinner on a regular night and try it again, hopefully with a different server. read more

My wife and I had lunch here last week. As an "old-timer" public market attendee it was nice to be able to drive right up to the door of the establishment I wished to visit. Public Provisions is a nice concept, it is clean, nicely decorated and very spacious. The food was OK. I had a smash burger and fries and the Smashburger was fine. The fries were cold and soggy and nearly black. I like really crisp fries so when I saw them, I was excited. When I ate them, I was disappointed in the texture and the temperature. My wife had a slice of mushroom and Swiss chard quiche. She said that the flavor of the quiche was excellent, but that there was no Swiss Chard and only one tiny piece of mushroom in the slice she was served. We will definitely go back and give them another shot, but overall our first trip was somewhat disappointing. read more

What lovely grapes Some cheese, ten yards One pound, 'scuse me I'll get the knife Please let me through This bread, those fish It's stale, they smell Madame's mistaken Well, maybe so" Public Provisions is situated within one of the side buildings, next door to Cure/Flour City Bakery (with which it has a business relationship). The interior is well-apportioned for those market days. Come on a quiet weekday morn, and it's a-quiet, though. Come on a market day, and it's a-bustlin' There's a coffee menu for coffee, and a food menu for food. The breakfast menu is quick and to the point. It speaks to you. And what it is saying is: "Get a breakfast sandwich, dummy." The Red Eye was a welcome dose of caffeine in a sophisticated flavor delivery system. Enough complexity to provide wonder while not overloading your taste buds. It also has the added benefit of waking you up! The iced coffee was delicious as well. One of the owners tells us that they splurged a little and got beans from the Pacific Northwest. Not only that, but the PacificNorthwestCoffeeFolk came to Public Provisions and trained the employees on all of the specialized coffeemaking equipment! You can detect this in the flavor. It's coffee, just... better. The breakfast sandwich can be gotten with bacon or with sausage. Either is recommended. The breakfast sandwich can be gotten with croissant or biscuit. Either is recommended, although the croissant is sort of the specialty of the baker who baked them! The sandwich had an adult taste with an undercurrent of recreation. Simple. Elegant. Savory. Definitely a through-line of local, fresh ingredients. Again: it's a breakfast sandwich, just... better. There are options aplenty for the other meals of the day, and we are told that rooftop seating will be arriving in spring of 2024. Don't Miss: Dude, have you even been paying attention? We got a Valentine's day dinner reservation at this restaurant because I absolutely love their calamari,but they had a pre fix menu tonight, but not to worry! It was absolutely fabulous,this restaurant is a hidden gem,it's ever crowded and the food is amazing!we started with cocktails, I got the Strawberry Choco Margarita which was accented with a chocolate covered strawberry. While waiting to order the server gave us these crackers with a smoked cheese and diced beets which was wonderful. This was followed by the first course, I ordered the chickpea pita starter and my partner ordered the wedge, both were fresh and delicious. The second course was the potato tart, finishing the third course with entrees, paella and beef. The dessert was a chocolate roll cake with raspberry sorbet. The menu lists a mousse but this was not a mousse, so that was the only negative! But guess what they gave us valentines shortbread cookies to take home! Who does that! We went for an early weekday lunch, so this review is for off-peak times. I got a special, scalloped potatoes and classic ny bagel toppings (lox etc) on focaccia, over easy egg on top. It was a massive portion and massively delicious. My wife got fish stew, which also may have been a special. Also delicious. I got a cappuccino, very nice. We got a booth, which we likely wouldn't get on market day, but it was great. Service was prompt, friendly and helpful. The bathrooms were even very clean. It was a Saturday night and there was a group of 6 of us that wanted to try somewhere we've never been. We decided on Public Provisions because it was the last of the public market restaurants that we hadn't tried. We sat down at 7pm and to our surprise, there were only 2 other groups in the restaurant. After our experience, I'm not sure why. The ambiance was inviting, however given the lack of clientele, it was missing the energy that you only get from a packed house. The staff and service was excellent and extremely friendly. On to the food. We ordered a burrata app, which was one of the specials. It was fantastic. Served on fresh bread with pistachios, honey, and beets(?) . We also had the calamari, which was fine and came with a very tasty spicy sauce. One of our guests had the seafood chowder (special), which he said was very good. I knew he was telling the truth by his lack of generosity when it came to offering anyone a bite. The cocktails that we ordered were good, but nothing special. For the mains, we checked off a large portion of the menu. We had the bibimbap, smash burger, fish special, and the pork chop. Everyone liked their meals and the only doggy bags that came home were due to the mammoth sized portion of fries that came with the smash burger. For dessert we split a lemon tart and went with their seasonal egg nog ice cream. Another guest had the grape ice cream. We don't typically order desserts when we go out, but these were all standouts. The lemon tart was creamy with a bite, and the crust was flaky without being dry. The mvp for everyone was the egg not ice cream though. Something that I never thought I'd say. Their ice cream is all homemade and must try! Overall we had a great experience and I hope this restaurant continues to experience success. Our total after tip came to about $50 per person, which was very fair for all the items we ordered. I'm hoping they see more clientele during dinner hours because I really think that will help improve the universal vibe. My friend and I decided to try Public Provisions for dinner on a Friday night. Parking was easy since it's in the public market and the restaurant is so much bigger than we thought! The inside was super clean and had the hipster vibes. Service was quick and friendly! For apps we shared the crispy cauliflower and shrimp gambas. The crispy cauliflower was definitely a very mild flavored dish. The cauliflower was cooked to a nice softness and the top was charred but it wasn't very crispy. The sauce on the bottom didn't have much flavor in my opinion, so did not complement the already plain cauli in any way. The shrimp gambas was a bit more flavorful but again, lacking any distinguishing zing in the flavor. The shrimp however was cooked very nicely. I had the bavette steak as an entree. For the most expensive thing on the menu, it was very disappointing. The steak was more on the well done side than the medium rare I requested. I didn't taste much seasoning and the glaze did little to help with the flavor. All in all, a very expensive meal that yielded little flavor. Maybe it's the new-ness of the restaurant and I will be back to try other dishes. read more

Just want to share first that this review is for the dinner service only - I know Public Provisions is open for breakfast and lunch as well, but the time I had below is based solely on a dinner I had here roughly a week ago First and foremost when it comes to the ambiance and design of the restaurant, we're definitely at a solid 4/5. It looks modern inside without trending too deep into the world of Edisons bulbs and raw wood tables - but it's very nice, industrial, and has a lovely window wall looking out to the main market premises. When it comes to the wait staff and servers, we're at a solid 5/5 - friendly, doting servers and management that really made my friends and I feel welcome while we were there. Very caring and you could tell they wanted us to have a positive experience When it comes to the food however, that's probably where the ball stops. If this restaurant were a *vegetarian only* restaurant, this review would easy be 5/5 stars without question. The baby leeks with pistacho romesco that my friends and I shared for an appetizer was by far the best bite of food across all of our appetizers, mains, and dessert. The leeks were soft and slow cooked likely in a ton of butter or oil, so much so that you could cut them with a knife, and the pistachio romesco was just herbacious, nutty, lemon-y, zingy, and so fresh it lit up all of our palates. While I'm sad only 3 half baby leeks grazed our appetizer plate, this is what I would order on every single future visit to this restaurant. Absolutely, incredibly delicious When it came to our mains, we ordered the short rib with cabbage, the pork chop with the green mole sauce, and the wheat berry bowl with sausage for dinner. Unfortunately, while short rib tends to be a chewier cut of beef anyway I found it be fairly overcooked and stringier than I like a short rib/brisket cut to be. The pork chop was curious because it was seared and seasoned well, but it ate extremely dry even despite a thin wisp of pink in the middle. The wheat berry bowl with cooked sausage was fine but there was nothing fresh to bring it all together - it certainly tasted individually of all of its elements but there was no real cohesion to make a truly satisfying bite. Maybe more acid needed, maybe more freshness? It's hard to say exactly but ultimately it was just OK and nothing to write home about The cabbage which was cut like a cabbage steak, slow cooked, grilled, and covered in and absorbing the aji panca and shallot demi-glace that came with the beef though was unbelievably outstanding. While it was only meant to be the side vegetable on a primarily beef dish, this was the star of all of our mains. In all honesty it was so delicious I almost wish the beef didn't come with it because I could've easily eaten 2 length-wise thick cuts of the cabbage! So really to summarize, I firmly believe this restaurant should go the vegetarian route because my god they make their vegetables sing. If they went this route, I really think they could make a momentous name for themselves not only in Rochester but probably all of Western New York. Honestly had a really great experience all around, but at most I can only give 3/5 stars right now due to some of the misses on the actual proteins read more

The bread is, as I've reviewed separately, amazing--some of the best sourdough I've had in the whole US, not just Rochester. I'd never actually had the food here today, I'd just resented how the breakfast sandwiches made my line longer. But I decided to believe the crowds, and had Sunday brunch here, which was semi-surprisingly uncrowded (but also not that surprising since the market's not on Sundays). The food was decidedly very good but not quite at the spectacular level of the bread. I had the "potato foccacia lox," which is too many nouns all next to each other. The foccacia was impeccable as expected, with a great crust and a soft interior with potatoes blending in nicely. The lox itself was tasty and standard, but didn't seem hand-cut or anything special. They had very small portions for the price. The food was not filling at all, It took forever to get someone to seve us. We sat at the bar were i had a full view of there prep cook. He was not wearing gloves, He should be not only wearing glove but he should be changing them often because of cross contamination. My son is a vegetarian and allergic to pickles and when he was cutting the vegetables he was also handling bacon. Never cleaning his prep area or cleaning the knife in-between between cutting the vegetables and the meat. Someone is going to get very sick. Unfortunately I didn't notice this until we were half way through our meal. I never finished because it Made me sick to watch. I would never go back there to eat or recommend them to anyone. Just an FYI it was supposed be cross contamination, and by you telling me that you hope that I'm the one that gets sick, you better hope that I don't. We love that we can get a fantastic well made dishes in a relaxed and unstuffy environment (not a scene, not crazy loud). We dine regularly at all of the well known places in Rochester, and the food at Public Provisions still sits in our top four.
