I read some reviews that described this hotel as having a conference aesthetic and it's certainly not a boutique design, but it really is a very beautiful and clean hotel, right across from the Guggenheim with outstanding service and a great bathroom. I had been traveling for awhile and started to feel a bit ill when I arrived, so I appreciated the black out curtains, incredible water pressure from the shower, and very comfortable bed so I could get a good nap in right when I arrived. Service was outstanding. The hotel arranged for a taxi to take me to Azurmendi, since it's a bit outside the city, and was so helpful anytime I needed something. I always appreciate turn down service and especially appreciated the pillow spray they left which was really lightly floral, not overpowering at all and really helped me sleep. The towel warmer was awesome and made me feel so cozy every time I got out of the shower. All around, this is a great hotel that I'd absolutely stay in again, perfect as a home base if you're in Bilbao, with an unbeatable location if you want to fit in the Guggenheim (literally right across the street!) Incredible service team and very clean, comfortable, and quiet rooms.

Our room on the fifth floor (512) was delightfully large with a nice balcony overlooking the square. In April the 187€ was a steal for this quality and especially given the inclusion of breakfast (23€/pp value AND two free passes to Guggenheim museum-20€ value). Like most historical properties it would be a nice upgrade to have better access to power outlets, but other than that I thought the marble bathroom was a good size and we had more than enough room in which to spread out. The hotel itself is beautiful with rich red carpets on a sweeping grand staircase and an amazing stained glass domed courtyard just off the lobby. The Belle Époque stained glass and other touches add a refined elegance to your stay. The breakfast buffet was included in our room rate and was absolutely outstanding with so many classic basque foods plus anything else you could possibly want from fresh fruit and juice, many pastries and breads and omelette s cooked to order. An amazing feast and not to be missed. Highly recommended

We were a little early but luckily a nice, quiet room was ready for us with two quite comfortable queen beds - which both me and my daughter very much appreciated after not sleeping well in a noisy hotel in Madrid. Bianca gave us a local map with a couple recommendations for lunch so we went off for the day. When I was booking hotels for our trip, I looked at the inclusion of a locally influenced breakfast buffet as part of the package. The breakfast buffet at this hotel was one of the best we had on our trip. From charcuterie and cheeses to local bread with traditional Spanish tomato/olive oil toppings to very fresh fruit to eggs to pastries to make-your-own smoothies to "pinxtos" (Basque tapas), this place had it all! So impressive and delicious! They had a couple espresso machines and a pitcher of hot milk to cap it off perfectly! Bianca was there for the whole duration of our trip and patiently and cheerfully helped us with many questions. She took our bags for the day when we checked out and bid us farewell when came back to collect them. She kindly gave us a couple water bottles when we left - so very thoughtful. I hope to get back to beautiful Bilbao someday - and would not hesitate to stay here again if I do! It was a perfect stay!

Extremely Disappointing Stay: Unwarranted Room Downgrade and Inconsistent Service…read more My wife and I recently stayed here, and unfortunately, it was one of the most unwelcoming hotel experiences we've ever had. A soft warning to fellow travelers of color: please proceed with caution if you are considering staying at this property. A Stark Contrast in Treatment While waiting in line at check-in, we watched the front desk agent (a white female staff member with multiple visible piercings) treat two elderly couples ahead of us with exceptional warmth and care--giving them local maps, answering endless questions, and acting like a personal travel guide. However, the moment my wife and I stepped up to the desk, her demeanor completely flipped to cold and dismissive. Despite having already completed online check-in prior to arrival, she made us repeat the entire process from scratch. To top it off, as we walked toward the elevators, she loudly called out across the lobby in front of other guests: "You didn't purchase the breakfast with your booking, so you don't have breakfast and will have to pay for it." It was completely unnecessary and publicly embarrassing. Unilateral Room Downgrade & Ridiculous Excuses Things got worse when we opened our room door. On April 15th, we booked and fully paid for the Split-Level Triple with Double Bed (their highest-priced room tier). Instead, we were placed in a Classic Double (their lowest-priced room tier). When we calmly brought this to her attention, expecting an easy fix, she refused to correct it and claimed: "The website's pictures mean nothing. We obviously can't put all the pictures of the different types of triple rooms on the website; it would be too big." When I asked why we weren't given the split-level room we actually paid for, she admitted they took it upon themselves to downgrade us, stating: "When we saw that it was only two of you, we knew that you didn't need the extra space, so we gave you this style triple instead." They unilaterally decided to downgrade us to their cheapest room simply because there were two of us, while still keeping the money we paid for their top-tier room. We felt robbed, targeted, and thoroughly unwelcome. Bright Spots The only reason this isn't a 1-star review is because of two exceptional team members: The gentleman on the morning shift who stored our luggage at 11:00 AM. The young man working the bar/lounge area that evening. Both were professional, welcoming, and demonstrated the level of service every guest deserves. Final Verdict A guest's treatment and room assignment should never depend on who happens to walk up to the counter or what they look like. Between the forced downgrade, the dismissive attitude, and the public call-outs, we were left feeling completely out of place. I strongly advise travelers--especially families and travelers of color--to think twice or double-check every detail of their room assignments at check-in if staying here.
