My go-to for the Mid-Hudson Valley! 5/5! SUMMARY: Very clean in all areas. Maintain their tools and spaces, and go the extra mile to keep their clients' new cuts sanitary too. Atmosphere is a mix of old-school and new-school with Rockabilly undertones. The staff is young and skilled, serving a varied clientele. Shop is appointment-only, via online booking. While the system is very simple, it may cause strife for older folk who are used to call-in and/or walk-in. Fair costs by comparison and location-- $30 a cut $35 a skin fade. Pay a little more and tip your barber though!! Cash-only, so come prepared. Free beer on tap, other customers to talk with if that's your bag, pretty LGBTQ friendly, and an occasional haunt for dogs of customers and staff. At this time, I have no information regarding their ability to cut Natural Hair well. DETAILS: Cleanliness: For a barbershop, quite exceptional. They have special tools to clean up the hair and-- well basically special tools for everything! Not only are the spaces kept clean, but they go the extra mile to have many different products to ensure the customer leaves without worry for infection or fungus. I've been hit with aftershave, teatree oil, witch hazel, powders... They also definitely change their razors and buzzer heads regularly. I've never been nicked, and I've never had my hair pulled by a dull buzzer. Even their bathroom (which kind of looks like it belongs in a bar, design-wise), is kept quite clean-- a feat for a space occupied predominantly by men. Atmosphere: It's got to be your bag, but they definitely put a lot of work into cultivating their aesthetic. It's got a mix of old school and new school that comes off a little hipster-y. It works for oldies and macho guys, while staying fresh enough to appeal to younger and broader audiences. Pugsly's prices are /more/ than fair. $30 for a haircut, $35 for a skin fade (and a little more because---- don't be the jerk who doesn't tip!!!). In this economic climate, and with the level of skill they provide, it's a good deal. I do wish they'd offer a 'clean-up' service. This was regular when I lived closer to Black and Dominican barber shops. It wasn't a full haircut. It was just a 10 minute service to make sure your fade and lines weren't getting messy. Procedures: They are now an appointment-only shop, and utilize an online-booking system. The staff is nice enough that they might take call appointments for the non-tech-savvy, but it's not the norm. I could see this causing problems for older clientele. The booking system they do use is very intuitive with basically no learning curve, so it is accessible to the layman. Second time coming here and I was excited for round 2! Accidentally booked at the Main Street location so I just walked over from the other location. Haircut was going just fine till the end when I was shown the back of my head and I mentioned that I might want to go a little shorter after reviewing... the barber very directly commented that he wasn't going to take it any shorter unless I paid for another haircut. I hadn't even gotten out of the chair. Rather than being a jerk I just obliged and made sure to tip 30%. All that being said, I won't be returning to Main Street. read more

My lil man Zman is really fussy about his hair. I mean, the kid spends as much time as a teenage girl fixing it up in the AM. We had the ideal hairdresser for him ... Christina, but alas, she left the salon place we liked some years ago and since then... we've been on a quest for the right hairdresser for him. We've gone from downtown to uptown to SoHo NYC spending up to $90 a haircut to find him the look he wants. That quest was a waste of time! I should have just taken him here in the first place. While the wait (old school first come first serve) was pretty long, it was wellllll worth it. Junior spent an unbelievable amount of time snipping and clipping at Zman's mane to get it to look down right righteous! My kid enjoyed every moment, the old school tonics and shaving creams, the pomade, the comb, we even got the pomade and comb as we left and the kid was combing his new doo in the car with a big smile on his face. Too bad I'm a girl, this place is BOYS ONLY :D If I were a dude, this place would be my jam. Every guy walked out with a smile and a handshake (old school meng). The atmosphere is super awesome, vintage bad boy barber collectables mixed with rockabilly, booze and other funky chachkas and pictures. Plenty of mags, even Playboys for you over 18 crowd. Won't sell quarters to customers for parking meters in a neighborhood of parking meters. Cash only in an age of Apple Pay etc. Retro is cool...to a point. Then by chance, I came upon Pugsley's Barbershop after reading some positive reviews online. This is what a real Barbershop is supposed to be. A fun, chill atmosphere that's a pleasure to be in while waiting for your turn at the clippers. These dudes know how to cut heads yo. No joke. I love this place ! How do you make my 17 year old daughter happy? Welp, she's been talking about having her hair done before her vacation. Now everyone who's done it in the past never made her happy,and I mean no one!! Well when she was talking about shaving it. I was scared!! So, her sister insisted we check out a barbershop instead of any salon. A friend recommended this place. It was easy to find. Walked in and I was hooked right away with all the artwork on the walls. My sister and I bought our "baby brother" (22yo) a gift certificate for Christmas because we felt like it was time he got a "real-big-boy haircut"! I have numerous friends that go to Pugsly's and have said nothing BUT awesome things...and I couldn't agree more! We did wait maybe an hour - but that is to be expected and I personally LOVE the idea of walk-ins only OR they would probably book up years in advance! I had a drink 2-doors down while my brother waited and then when he got called to the chair I went in and asked Benny (who was amazing!) to please give him a real haircut and that we trusted him to find the right "style" for my brother. My sister and I were so happy with the haircut (as was my brother!!)...he looked amazing and honestly it was a precision haircut! I've never seen better! My brother felt good and looked good.. and it totally gave him a new lease on life! LOVE THIS PLACE!! In a time when the field is dominated by super-expensive salons and lackluster mall cuts, Pugsly's offers the experience of a retro barbershop. The barbers are friendly but professional, and very skilled. Haircuts are finished with hot lather and a straight razor. They also offer hot towel shaves. The only negative aspect of the barbershop is the wait. They have become victims of their own success, and sometimes a trip to the barbershop can become an afternoon of hanging out. They don't give appointments, but do offer a beer on the house as you wait. NOT good for kids unless you want to teach them how to cuss. I waited almost 3 hours for a cut and the cut was sloppy! I actually had to get it redone the next week--at a better shop I might add. As we waited I grew more and more uncomfortable because the barbers had a cussing contest with no regard for my 6 year old sitting there. Their conversations were so filthy that even I was blushing--and that's saying something! I even asked them if they could tone it down but they disregarded my request. I set aside a whole afternoon just to get a haircut here. They are meticulous and miss not even a follicle that needs taming. There's a lot of banter in the shop, which makes the wait to get a haircut a real commitment. Bring diversions. The cut itself is given with great care. There's a lot of banter between the barbers and the customers - cars, motorcycles - that sort of thing; and sometimes the banter feels as if it assumes we all have time to wait while they have their fun. "Top Notch Barber" is certainly an understatement! I received the best hair cut I've ever gotten, barber cut my hair just right to compliment the natural shape of my head, and hair growth. Went to get a haircut last week. Place was phenomenal. I got in and had no wait. Mike cut my hair. I have to say, my former barber shop (owner moved out of state) was already great, but this really tops it. It's a nice atmosphere, funny jokes and good conversations.
