The first time a had gnocchi and the second time a pizza. Good food, friendly service and only walking distance from my home that's why I had to check it out. They have an open kitchen which I always like!The place is a bit huge so that the service forgets to keep an eye on you. For example when you're ready to order the bill. But that's just a small negative point. I'd come back and try their pasta the next time. read more

History

Established in 2017.

Am Anfang war es ein unscheinbares weißes Haus. Nach eingehender Beschäftigung mit der Vergangenheit des Gebäudes und dem Stadtteil, entschlossen sich die Besitzer das Gebäude - unter Beibehaltung des historischen Charmes - zu sanieren und zu modernisieren. Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde in diesem Gebäude aus Kohle Gas zur Energieerzeugung gewonnen. Die Sanierung mit typischen Industriefensterkreuzen, dem freigelegten original roten Backstein, die 4 hohen Bogentüren, die Farbgestaltung und das Lichtdesign ergeben ein bei Tag und Nacht einzigartiges Gebäude in einzigartiger Lage - im Schnittpunkt zwischen Eppendorf, Lokstedt, Groß Borstel, am Eingang zu Hamburgs längster Sackgasse - dem Tarpenbeker Ufer.

Le Lion is the cradle of the gin basil smash (I had never heard of it until I came here but it seems to be a Hamburg thing). You do pay a premium for the drink but it's the original and it's also a good drink. In conclusion: Come early to get inside for the full speakeasy experience. Come late and understand if you have to sit outside. Don't miss the gin basil smash; they invented it.

Getting seats was a bit of a challenge but we succeeded as it's only a small room. Seats aren't too comfy though, more like simply leather benches and chairs. The clientele was relaxed and slightly older (30/40) than the usual young crowd you'd find in these kind of bars. Sadly neither Astra nor Becks on offer there but Augustiner and Pilsner Urquell instead. Also they seem to have a cocktail of the week for a good price. It's a fine place to kick of a good night out or alternatively for a quiet beer in the neighbourhood during the week. Not too bad.
