There are many opportunities to meet new people as long as you are willing to! If you want to be an engineer and you're broke, or you don't want to be broke after you finally become an engineer, this is the school for you. You receive a very comparable education compared to West Lafayette, minus the parties (so your grades will probably be better.) Bad things about the school: The cafeteria feels like you're getting your lunch from a high class gas station, for about the same price too. Avoid any classes in Gyte! Unless you enjoy prison-like buildings and desks that must have been stolen from a jr. high school. Overall, great value for the money, and they really work to get you hired out of school, they got me an engineering job in my sophomore year! read more

I'm working as a research student in mechanical engineering. I was working late in the lab and was stopped walking down the hall going to scan a document. The Rent-A-Cop was all "Where do you think you're going?" "I'm going to gyte basement to scan something." "The buildings are closed, BOSS! They closed at 6!" So I apologized and he stared at me like I'm a criminal and an idiot, and he followed me out the other side of the building I parked at. I couldn't even swipe out, and had to search for a terminal at the fitness center across the street. I didn't know it was a crime to work late! The school is ok I guess otherwise, but they really need to liven up the coursework. It would be a much better degree if the first 2 years weren't a weed out operation and they taught us how to engineer during that time. A select few of the professors will try deliberately to make you fail. read more

Based on my experience at PUC, I can definitely recommend this fine institution of higher learning... it's where I done learned to toss back shots of liquid cocaine!!!! All kidding aside, PUC holds a special place in my heart. It restored my faith in a proper college edjumication with instructors that care and want you to succeed. The curriculum is designed to be flexible for those that happen to be working and trying to finish their degree. I managed to do so while working full time in Chicago. They've plenty of useful (and useless) classes for you to choose from their distance learning courses. The only bad thing I can say about PUC is they made the mistake of hiring the biggest PoS, bastard, sorry excuse for an instructor in the history (both written and not) of mankind. Yes, I'm talking about you, KUJO. Those in the know, would know who this prick is. You suck. Bad KuJo, bad! *bitchslap* You can't teach worth a damn. PUC is a highly recommended commuter campus with local flavor and a teaching staff that brings valuable experience into the classroom. Many teachers were/are consultants or are retired from their corporate careers. The crowd at PUC is an ethnic melting pot, and the evening classes typically represent many age groups. Most students work, or have careers already, so it is a great place to network. I can't give 5 stars anymore because I heard some of my favorite teachers (from the CIS program) were asked to leave since they didn't have a PhD (Nipul, Kevin, Krupa... you guys were the best). Aside from that tragedy, it's a great school and an excellent value. read more

I enjoy taking classes at PNW online. I feel that the Professors are very attentive. However, I have one class on campus and I'm really not very happy with my on campus experiences. I am older and I have a full time job, a family, and quite a few health issues. My interactions with faculty on campus has really made me feel they show a lack of support. For example I missed 2 classes. One time was because I was out of town and the other was for a dr. Appointment that could not be rescheduled. I told my Professor prior to having these absences. I received zeros for both quizzes that I missed. However, my Professor told me to write an essay for my missed quiz. I still received a zero and no credit. The other quiz he told me not to worry about because it was not worth much. Due to these things I now have a 62%. We have a very nice and educated young woman in our class, but she tends to monopolize most discussions. I am typically a participant in our class discussions In our last discussion, I didn't say much because I didn't really get the chance. I also do not like how I am made to feel unworthy of getting a degree here simply because I am taking online classes. I feel a lot of pressure to go to school on campus even though I've said it really is not feasible at this time and in my situation. I am still being pressured to do so and it actually makes me want to ask the Dean. If I can't get a degree here unless I'm on campus then I'd like to know. If that is the case maybe they shouldn't offer online classes. On the upside, I have found my online class Professors to be very attentive and supportive. I'm wondering if maybe the Westville campus is perhaps more supportive of adult students than the Hammond campus. I would not recommend Purdue for Adult students, not the hammond campus anyway. read more

PUC is a great campus with a quality atmosphere. Most of my experiences with the professors have been great except for the one or two that want to make life miserable. Do yourself a favor and stay away from one particular professor that teaches entry level Economics, he's a self loathing individual that seeks out students for the sole purpose of embarressing them. Horrible! While one or two are bad, there are twenty others that rival those of big time university campuses. College is what you make of it, and understanding that sometimes you jsut have to roll with the punches is all you can do. Consider PUC for it's academics, and extra-curricular activities on a smaller scale. Mom and Dad will thank-you if you are a commuter since costs will be driven down considerably. read more

Its the most boring place on earth, if you don't know how to find your fun. However, if you want an extremely marketable degree at a fraction of the cost, PUC is the place to be. Its slowly beginning to become its own school with its own identity so, soon enough, my review will make no sense. Its a good time. Just... don't stay at the dorms. You know what, I know several people who talk trash about Purdue and joke about it, but I also know just as many people who have gone there and absolutely love it there. Personally, I don't hate it or love it, I guess I stand somewhere in the middle on this issue. I've attended there twice, and I probably will attend one or two more times eventually( but that's another story) and theres definately things that I really liked about it. Of course I certainly had my dislikes about it as well. One major dislike I have is the fact that the Chronicle newspaper owes me eight dollars still to this day, but I'm pretty sure they are unaware of this fact. I really enjoy Purdue Cal's library. I find it very useful. I enjoy the lounge rooms located all over the school. They have really good snacks in the vending machines. They have addicting coffee in the vending machines too, which I lived off of daily. The cappuchino is addicting too. They have a nice little arcade room. Most of the teachers seem well educated and friendly. The outside area between the school's different buildings is beautiful. I really enjoyed walking through it. There are flowers everywhere, and benches. When I went through a brief secretive smoking period I was out there constantly. Shhh.. don't tell. The gift shop is a little bit addicting, I used to live in there. They have cool posters, a little cd section, and tons of neat Purdue accessories, which I foolishly bought alot. I also found some really excellent books of poetry here by such prominent writers as Virginia Hamiliton-Adair and Jim Carrol. Some of the food in the cafeteria is good. Hmmm, I guess I liked this place alot more than I like to admit. What's cool too, is the fact that you can attend the Calumet Campus and get credit for grades and for graduation at the main Campus in Lafayette. The computer lab is pretty big too. I also felt somewhat like I was back in high school there, because half of Bishop Noll seems to go to there. read more

All talk no show. Seems like a good school for the money till you start and see what it really is, there's a reason they have such a low graduation rate. Very disorganized, I was supposed to be able to take take half my classes at the Westville campus and other half at Hammond, instead of being 50/50 it was more like 90/10 forcing me to commute farther than they predicted. Not to mention regular class dropping and adjustments last minute screwing up my schedule every semester therefore preventing me from having the option of completing my degree in 4 years as planned. If you wan't to go cheap and live in the area just go Ivy Tech, if you want to be a Purdue student then make sure to go to the MAIN CAMPUS not the this junior knockoff school. read more

The academics itself are not terrible. However, depending on the program, they might not be so great either. After completing my associate's, I was considering staying for the computer graphics program, but found it somewhat disappointing. The school is known mostly for its engineering program, so I can't say I'm entirely shocked. One of my largest gripes was, because the school has an open admissions policy, you tend to get a lot of 100-level classes with people that either slack off or complain about how "hard" the class is (no matter how simple it may be). Generally, just being surrounded by unpleasant people. It wasn't until I took a few 300-/400-level courses that I began meeting people that were serious about their work and their major. The professors were mostly helpful. There were very few that made me dread attending their courses (unfortunately, those same people also taught a lot of the courses in the department I was in) because they tended to preach their personal beliefs rather than relevant course material or topics for critical thinking and discussion. A problem I know many students have had - regardless of course of study - was availability of classes. Many I know would need certain higher level courses, and the school would not offer them unless there were enough students. Because of the size of the campus, there might not be a lot of students that need to take that specific course for a while. There's a way around this, but it's a huge pain. As for commuting, it was generally not terrible (at least, not up until I left when they had massive amounts of construction on Route 41), and it's easily accessible by I-80/94. Parking tends to be a pain if you don't want to park in the garage (which really isn't so bad). The campus is safe, even at night. The school also offers a LOAD of clubs/activities/sports. While it seemed nice on the surface, myself and others had a lot of trouble getting information from clubs we were interested in (or we received information months later). Unless it's an organization or sport known for being active, it's sort of a toss-up. Overall, the school isn't bad. It's an institution I recommend to my college-seeking peers when they want some that's priced well and is close to home. read more

Not a good experience as a parent! Staff members get angrily easy when you don't understand their answers to your questions. It almost seems as I am talking to a student that they employee. This school also makes incoming freshman take a course that is not needed for anyone's degree which is a 1st Year Experience class. After reading the syllabus its just a class for the University to make money. That's fine for students who live in Hammond and get their schooling for free or for people getting grants/scholarships but when you have none of those and paying out of pocket this is not something one would want to be paying for. I would recommend Indiana University Northwest as a better choice in Northwest Indiana region. They are more professional people working there who want to work for you and do not assume you work for them. Institutions forget that we employ them for an education not the other way around. If you don't live here in the area and you want the dorm experience go to Purdue Lafayette, if you insist on going to a Purdue school. Better surrounding areas much safer than Hammond area. If you don't believe me look up the Northwest Indiana Times paper see what's been going on around this area lately. You will be shocked!! read more

Getting in shape and experiencing outdoor activities have never been easier! At Purdue Calumet's Fitness center on 169th street, Hammond, IN. There are a variety of machines for members to use but there are not just regular machines to use. Purdue's Fitness center has three enclosed rooms for those who want to play tennis, soccer, and anything else that sparks your interest. Inside the gym itself there's a rock climbing wall as well with two different modes and you can even adjust the slope of the machine. I know all of this from first hand experience, since the summer of 2010 I have been a member at Purdue Calumet's Fitness Center and I love it! When you first become a member the staff runs a series of tests to test your flexibility, strength, and how "fat" you are. Now the last thing isn't as bad as it may seem, it's only so that as a member to have something to focus on and for to stay on track. The "fat" tester shows how much body fat you have and with a chart you look at you determine whether you are too "fat" for your age and height or just right! Another procedure for first time members is that a staff member shows you how to use each machine. If this hasn't appealed to you yet then take a look at these prices and compare; monthly its $57.25, quarterly (3months) its $149, and yearly (12 months) its $504.50. that's not bad for everything they offer with of coarse their fully equipped locker room and towels you are allowed to borrow. read more

I am an Alumni student and graduated August 2016. I can honestly say there are both positive and negatives! In the many years that I have attended we have never had any issues that I had known about in the school. Oh wait I am wrong 3 years ago their was a domestic dispute that occurred and I didn't even hear about it until 6months later. Yes there have been some issues not around the school but the immediate surrounding city (Hessville). But the police and Mayor have took action and acted quickly to resolve the issues and have equipped the city with cameras that lead in and out. Purdue has been making strides and the campus is getting bigger with a new nursing 69000 building in 2019! Every one that I have encountered has been friendly and the school offers plenty of FREE STUDY ASSISTANCE! The professor's that I have encountered have always offered to help on any subject and the counselors really care about your future! I went to school in Spain one Summer and I never in my life thought that could happen but my counselor helped me out a year in advance to apply for assistance or grants! read more

I couldn't force myself past the admissions process. I went in person to the campus, which is in itself no small task. The buildings aren't labeled in any way a new person can navigate. I spent an hour trying to navigate the map on my phone to figure out where I needed to be. When I finally made it to the admissions desk, the woman sitting there (apparently trying to train) ignored me. Finally after several minutes she acknowledges my presence. Took my admissions form and simply dismissed me. When asked about the admission fee, you could see a light bulb go on. (Worried for the poor person she was training) simply directed me across the lobby to the cashier. Upon arrival at the cashiers (which keep in mind is all of 20 feet from the admissions desk) I told her I needed to pay my admissions fee. She asked for a student ID number. Told her I haven't been admitted yet. Asked if I had applied online, no I didn't I literally just handed it in twenty feet away. She had to go ask the admissions lady for a number I would be assigned before she could accept my fee. Returned home with a little apprehension as that was my first impression of the campus and its faculty. A month goes by before I get a letter in the mail informing me in order to process my application I need to pay the 30.00 transfer course fees and submit my transcripts (which I handed to admissions with my admissions letter, yes in a sealed envelope with seal to show it was official). They couldn't be bothered to inform me of this information a month ago? What an impression to give a student. I have withdrawn my application to this school. In the month I had been accepted, all credits transferred, met with an advisor and signed up for classes with Indiana University, All before Purdue cal could be bothered to notify me of more money and information needed. read more
