Chicago State University made my college experience horrible. The advisors do not know what they are doing. Most of them are teachers who do not have time to advise students. Any information you need to know comes from peers not the staff. The school is unorganized and money hungry. read more

The best thing about Chicago state university is the staff. The Dean of Students, Ms.Upshaw, Ms.Bennet, and every single staff member that I've ran across are absolutely amazing. It's honestly a bit sad that they word for CSU because the staff are so much greater than the university itself. They are supportive, loving, and really do want their students to excel in life. Unfortunately the school itself is a shit show. It's not clean, outdated, and not worker-friendly. Most schools at least have evening classes but CSU practically has none. You can't go to the school unless you work at night or don't have a job at all. There are very few resources to succeed here. I wouldn't recommend CSU for anyone. They have very few programs in comparison to other schools. It's cheap but the area is located in the hood and commuting can be unsafe if you're using public transit. Good luck with your endeavors at CSU.... If you can avoid it, just go to the community colleges instead. read more

Run...do not walk...AWAY from this place. the low retention rate, the nonchalance of the professors, the unfeeling and uncaring of the admin department as well as the financial aid department. If you are enticed by the low tuition, don't be. As you will have to fight agains the succubus that this place becomes on your soul, you will have to fight against a strong current of a black hole to escape it if you think of transferring anywhere else. Credits will not be given, admin will give you attitude and recommendations will not be awarded. If possible, this place would get a "HELL NO" rating...not an EEK! read more

I've been going to this university since spring of 2016 and I can honestly say I have learned a lot by attending this school. I'm in the college of business program and my professors are great. Each one genuinely wants to see their students excel and help find new opportunities that best fit us. The professor to student ratio is about 1 to 15 at most depending on the class. The only complaint that I have is that the classrooms or computer labs are not up to date and not tech savvy. Sometimes teachers do have trouble using the projectors but for the most part they are already prepared with another alternative if this issue does happen. The campus is safe and there's easy access to get here with many transportation options. Go Cougars ! read more

I originally registered for school here in 2003. I completed 2 semesters before I became very busy with my job and had to postpone obtaining my BA. I decided to return last year and finish and while I am now walking away with my bachelor's degree I also feel a little empty handed and unprepared in moving forward with my masters. The 3 stars are for the few professors that are really really awesome and cannot go unnoticed! Dr. Elizabeth Arnott-Hill is a certified genius and is an amazing instructor. She teaches cognitive psychology and knows her stuff inside and out! I also had the privilege of sitting as a research assistant for her and learned so very much. Some other great professors in the psychology department are Professor Kaife Abedin (also an advisor), Tracy Bibbs, Dr. Laosibikan, Dr. Etta is a riot and Professor Redman. The administrative departments at CSU are ridiculously understaffed and NEVER, NEVER answer the phones or return emails. If you want help, you have to go up to the school. I am really looking forward to continuing my education at NEIU this coming summer and absorbing some much needed knowledge that will be required in my career path. read more

My son attends CSU and at first I was worried because he is white and he would be the odd man out. That never happened. The people there are so friendly and welcoming. Barrington McClean in financial aid is amazing so helpful and caring. My son is doing great, he got a 3.7,the first semester. I agree the neighborhood is shady but the school inside is well protected. If you have a car you can go off campus and it is easy to jump on the freeway. I was worried....he loves it! read more

No, it is not an Ivy League school. No, you are not PAYING for an Ivy League school. Coming to school here means you pay significantly less that at even the other Illinois state universities. It is not fancy. It is a little run down, but they make improvements every semester, the campus is very safe and the students are kind and funny and take their classes much more seriously than at some other schools. I am white and I have never felt unwelcome or scared. I park off campus I the neighborhood and walk over. I also walk to stores and restaurants in the neighborhood and ride the CTA buses and trains. School has small classes, excellent professors and the best value private school in Chicago. Unfairly called a Ghetto school, but the diversity ranks it amongst the best. Very under appreciated school with a great mission, few funds (library not a strong point, students very friendly, facilities lacking thrills, bells and whistles. The school has the lowest graduation rate, highest drop out rate, and highest transfer rate for a reason. I attended the College of Business. The teachers gave little to no information as to what would be on the exams, they simply just said read the book and refer to the power points, though there was no information found in either as to what was on the exams. I received little to no instruction as to what information should be required in the papers as well. The teachers simply said summarize sections. read more

What's with all the bad reviews? I'm Hispanic and I like it here. It did feel a bit weird at first surrounded by all black people and feeling like the odd man out (paranoid that everyone was looking at me LOL but no) but I got used to it really quickly and don't feel like I get treated differently. People here are much friendlier than where I used to go. Only con is it is in a shady neighborhood. There is campus police everywhere though. Most of my classes are really easy and like other universities you often have to listen to socialist professors and their ramblings but that is pretty much a given. A few professors are very challenging though, even for me. I initially just came here because I was getting a scholarship but I ended up liking it. Oh also, there is a free shuttle service that operates around campus and takes students to the redline. Beats waiting for the bus across the street in front of the seedy gas station. They have tons of scholarships. You just have to get good enough grades, which here is not that high. The acceptance rate here is actually very low. It makes it seem like a selective school but not really. Average ACT score is like 17. The plus side of this is that they design things to make you succeed; as much as an impersonal bureaucracy can anyways. I came from a different, less underprivileged university, and they couldn't care less about you. Nor did they offer really much in the way of scholarships or they made it seem very hard to reach. But here they have incentives to help you. For example here you have to go meet with your advisor every semester to make sure you got the right classes and are on track for graduation. And of course the scholarships, among other little things. read more

By far, the most unprofessional school I have ever attended!!! I am beyond disappointed. The administrative staff never answers the phones, never return calls or emails. To attempt to get any matter resolved or question answered, you must drive there and speak to someone. Warning.... prepare yourself to get the run around and possibly leave without getting your matter resolved... Also, they will give you incorrect information such as deadline dates and hold you responsible for any late fees for missing the correct deadline date. I made the big mistake of transferring in about a year ago, It has been nothing, but headaches. I'm definitely transferring out! read more

Horrible school. It's so funny that I thought I would have trouble with the students because of the neighborhood it was in, but it was actually the faculty that gave me the hard time. I spent a semester there. I was trying to graduate ASAP, so I was trying to take classes at Moraine Valley Community College simultaneously, and I lived 10 minutes from MVCC as opposed to 45 from CSU. Naturally, when both schools offered the same course, I chose to take it at the closer, much more organized institution. It turned out that in order for CSU to accept the transferred credit from MVCC, an advisor from CSU had to sign off on it for approval. So I followed protocol, and the advisor told me that she didn't recommend what I was doing, and that she didn't think she'd sign off on it, but to come back later. I left the office in tears. I couldn't believe people would stand in the way of education like this. I'm a young black student, and as an older black woman, I would've expected her to understand my situation. I didn't need anyone to tell me what they advised. I knew what I was able to handle and what would've been too much. She didn't even as much check my GPA or how many classes I'd taken at once to even give an adequate judgement. I tried to give the school another shot the following semester. I must mention that the first week of school, the line for the bookstore goes out the building all day long, so I waited until the second week for the much shorter line. By now, I've got homework due soon in classes, so it's imperative that I get my materials. I gave the student aid my schedule, and he went to obtain the three books that I needed. My financial aid covered all but $20 of the books, so I had to run to the car to get that money, so I asked him to HOLD my books for me. When I came back, I had to stand in line all over again, and to top it off, my books had been put back and now only one of the three were still available. I gave up. The penalty for dropping at that date was 50%, and I happily gave them their money because I couldn't stand another minute playing games and wasting time at this school. It was a total nightmare, and I definitely wouldn't recommend this school even if they gave away education!!!! read more

This school is by far the worst school when it comes to housing. The rooms are small, there is only one closet and the housing director is not helpful at all. You send in your application to say that you are a early sleeper and that you are very tidy and they put you with someone who sleeps late and who is very untidy. Apart from the rooms the food is horrible. Some server in the caf hold the food with there hands, some of them hardly change their gloves and the workers uses incident languages in-front of the customers. I can say though that the business department has some great teachers. You will learn something trust me on that. There was this one teacher though Ms. Smith she was horrible, No one understood what she teach. Its like one thing over and over, and she was always unprepared. I would only recommend if you are a business student and you would live off campus. STAY AWAY FROM THE DORMS. read more
