i am not a fan of long reviews so i will nutshell this and i am only speaking in regards to the annapolis, md studio. -the owner susan is an absolute psycho. extremely unprofessional and made me feel unconfortable. -you will get charged for miscellaneous things. -the floor mats smell like cheap vodka. -felt very cramped. kept having to move my equipment around. the class itself might be better at other locations, but definitely not worth my time in annapolis. read more

I have been coming to Pure Barre Annapolis for a few years now and love the space and the workout so much. Even thru Covid I felt like they did an awesome job of keeping classes small and safe. It's the best low impact workout that you can get out there. The staff are all friendly and super helpful and the space is beautiful. I have been to many Pure Barre studios--it's a highly effective workout and I was a regular at the studio in my college town, Greensboro. I spent a few summers in Austin, Texas and had positive experiences at that studio as well. However, at Pure Barre Annapolis I had the worst experiences I've ever had with any Pure Barre studio and one of the worst customer services experiences I've ever had in general. I received a class package from my parents as a gift to use when I visited them in Annapolis. Unfortunately, I had an accident and was unable to attend the classes over break and wanted to know if I would still be able to use the classes over spring break or summer (on the website, the policy says the classes expire 3 months from the date of purchase). I called and left a voicemail and also sent an e-mail to the owner, Susan Singleton. She replied by saying she had no record of the class pack my mother bought me. I went into the studio and explained my situation to her, showed her the receipt SHE e-mailed to my mother confirming the purchase, and asked if I could use my class pack beyond the three month time limit since I had an injury and wouldn't be able to use the classes until my next school break. She looked up my account and told me that the three month period begins on the date of the first class, not the purchase date, but that I had already used my first class. This confused me, because according to her, the date I attended my first class was a date I was out of town. She responded by asking if my mother --who is in her 70's and had foot surgery a month earlier-- may have used the class. I told her that was impossible. At this point, I was confused and hurt: I love Pure Barre and wanted to use the classes--I wasn't asking for a refund; I didn't want the money back, but 300$ is a lot of money to waste. I went home found my credit card statement that had charges made in another city --proof that I was out of town on the day she accused me of using my first class. I also had a dated X-Ray of the screw they put in my mother's foot that proved that she would be unable to walk, let alone attend a barre class that day. Susan was so incredibly rude and disrespectful. I never brought the pictures of the credit card statement or the X-Ray to prove that I did not take the class because I am a customer, not a criminal and I didn't want to attend a studio where I was treated like a criminal. I hope you try Pure Barre--my experiences at other studios have made me feel strong, healthy, and empowered. My experience at Pure Barre Annapolis with Susan Singleton made me feel insignificant and powerless. read more

Do not give the owner, Susan, your credit card information. She spewed lies and threats over a money dispute that started with her miscommunication over how to purchase a class. The bank had to step in and handle the situation. It's a shame because the classes were great and the instructors were so nice, but don't trust her. Do not give this Pure Barre your business. I am not one to leave nasty reviews, but after weeks of trying to resolve my issue with Pure Barre Annapolis directly, as well as through Pure Barre Corporate, I am following through with my promise to both of those entities that I publish online about my experience. In early November, nine friends and I purchased tickets to a Saturday morning class. One car made it in on time. The other one was exactly 3 minutes late because we couldn't find a parking spot. Being that most of us in this second car were regular Pure Barre customers, we were relieved that we were within the standard 5 minute grace period. However, the front desk woman would not let us in. Worse, she was rude and condescending. However, she did provide us with the owner's name, email, and cell phone number so that we could "take it up with her." Minutes later, we called Susan about our experience and about getting a refund. What happened next was so much worse than not being allowed into a class for which we paid. Even though we were very polite and respectful, she scoffed and yelled at us saying things like: "you people are so entitled and just expect everything handed to you." She even accused us of stalking her for having her cell phone number even though the studio manager had willingly given it to us without us asking. After the class, when we were all together, the friends who had been in the class assumed we weren't let in because there was no space in the studio. They said that it was uncomfortably full and there was no personal space. So, even if we had been allowed in, Susan had clearly oversold the class! Since then, I tried to follow up with Susan through email (knowing how poor our experience had been on the phone) for several weeks. All I wanted is a refund for myself and my four friends. None of us live in Annapolis, so a credit to the Annapolis studio is no good to us.  Even corporate Pure Barre was no help. After 12 emails and nearly two months of back and forth, their only line of defense was that the MindBody confirmation email had disclaimer language about being let into class. However, several of us (myself included) did not book on MIndBody, instead through purebarre.com. And neither Pure Barre Annapolis nor Pure Barre Corporate have produced evidence of this "policy" in any written form. After being a Pure Barre customer for years, I will never give them another penny of mine. But because I consider myself a reasonable person and I had SUCH a negative experience with Susan Singleton, I urge anyone reading this to think twice before giving her any of your hard earned money. read more

So let me start off by saying the workout is INCREDIBLE. The first time I went Tara, my instructor was kind, helpful and overall a real delight to work with. The second class I went to is where we ran into some issues. I have toe-less sticky socks, which were purchased at another Barre studio I attend regularly. In the middle of class, the owner came over and handed me another pair of socks and requested that I put them on, without using the word please. Not to mention, she had seen me in class two days before and I was wearing them and nothing was mentioned. It was an extremely unprofessional way to handle something so simple and lead to an overall unpleasant experience. It's a shame, because as I said before the workout is incredible, but if the owner doesn't value new clients and approach confrontation in an appropriate way I can't see many people wanting to try it agai read more

Pure Barre is a great workout for all abilities. I have been attending regularly for two years. The workouts are constantly changing and the instructors are fantastic. All it takes is the ability to listen and follow direction. The pace is fast and the instruction becomes easier with each class but the workout is always a challenge. The focus required is therapeutic, the instructors are always encouraging, the workout is awesome and the studio is a welcoming environment. Highly recommend to anyone looking for workout regime they hope to make a lifestyle habit. read more

I really wanted to like Pure Barre, but my experience with Pure Barre Annapolis has left a bad taste in my mouth, and I will likely not attend another class anywhere. In September 2015, I wanted to try a class and asked if they had a military discount. The attendant (not the instructor) was not sure and offered to look into it during class. After class, I was told the military discount was 3 months unlimited for $130. I though it was a great deal and even questioned the price. Someone else behind me also commented on how great a deal it was and wished they had signed up for it. NO ONE commented that it was $130/mo auto pay for 3 months. I filled out the information form with address, email, account etc. and signed the credit card slip for $130. Nearly a month later, I noticed that my membership was expiring and spoke with an employee (an evening instructor) who informed me that the membership was actually $130/month for three months. I told her that this was not clear to me when I purchased the membership. She said she would convert my membership to the "new client special" of $125 for one month and I would be refunded $5 on my credit card and would not be charged again. After the original month, I did not attend any classes because I was under the impression that changes we discussed were made and did not have a monthly pass. In early December, I noticed 2 monthly charges on my credit card for $130. I contacted Pure Barre twice by phone to discuss the matter and received no return calls. I contacted the owner of Pure Barre Annapolis via email, explained the situation and requested a refund for the 2 months that I was told I would not be charged. The owner refused to refund my money, insisting that I signed a contract that agreed to a 3 month auto pay. She offered to convert the charges to a one-month regular membership for $225 and give me a store credit for the remaining $135. (I could never pay $225 per month for any type of class, and at this point, I certainly did not want a credit to the studio). After multiple emails asking her to reconsider and explaining the situation, she still refused to refund me, and suggested I contact my credit card company to dispute the charge. I stopped by the studio to obtain a copy of the contract I signed and the employee working was not able to find it. I emailed the owner and requested a copy of the contract that she stated I signed. She provided a blank generic copy of a contract that was completely different than the original form that filled out. As far as I'm concerned, the charges to my credit card in October and November were unauthorized. I have had to spend time contacting my credit card company to contest these charges. I am terribly disappointed in the business practices of Pure Barre Annapolis. Not only was I never provided the supposed contract that I signed, the owner did not uphold what her employee told me she would originally do. I really wanted to like Pure Barre!..However, I will not be attending another session. I had tried a similar barre class a few years ago and had an overall good experience but liked the flexibility of the class schedule at Pure Barre Annapolis (I attended a Sunday class). I am giving it 2 stars as I feel that the staff and instructor that I encountered were quite friendly and nice. And, the location I felt was excellent. However, listed below are my concerns and reasons why I will choose another exercise program: 1. Without giving names--the instructor that I had was nice but I felt was not as helpful as I would have hoped considering this was my first class with the Pure Barre method. And, it was pretty clear that many of the attendees in the class had been coming for weeks if not months. I consider myself an "intermediate beginner" regarding regularly exercising and I am in great health. But, I feel first-timers and more advanced students should not be placed in the same class and perhaps there should be beginner classes. 2. In addition, there were minimal modifications to some of the exercises during the class I attended which in turn could increase risk of injury. In addition, I felt I was overextending my muscles and now after taking the class less than 2 weeks ago--I have a sore and slightly sprained wrist. (thankfully it is my left wrist and not my right.) 3. The warm-up was not what I was expecting either and was too high-energy in my opinion. Thankfully I stretched a little bit before class!.. 4. I felt the price is a bit unreasonable for one class--$25 dollars...However some exercise programs offer a FREE introductory class or a discounted FIRST class (such as one of the Pure Barre LA locations--the classes are $15 for NEW Students)--so I am happy I did not purchase Unlimited classes. Lastly, the instructor forgot to give me the waiver to sign after the class and I was so sore I did not realize until I was already gone. I had such high hopes for a better experience and it is disappointing. And, in all my years of exercising, playing sports and dancing--I have never sprained my wrist!. read more

MY EXPERIENCE STARTED ALMOST ONE YEAR AGO. I became a permanent member May 2016. I am 74 years old, a diabetic, + spinal stenosis, so take this into account. i love my Barre classes. I TRY to come 3 x's a week, have mastered most of the positions, those I can't do, I ad lib, & am encouraged to do WHAT I CAN. The instructors which included the owner/instructor SUSAN are the BEST. I NOTICE WHEN A NEW PERSON COMES IN they take the time to introduce themselves and give a thumbnail as to what the instructor will be saying and how the body should react. I feel much better mentally and physically. I noticed when I got a bad cold black friday 2016 until after the first of the year, my leg cramps came back. I just tried Barre for the first time ever this week and LOVED it. I am NASM (personal trainer) certified, and have done weightlifting, Crossfit, spin, yoga, hot yoga, tons of sports, but never Barre. I have to say that it is the perfect balance between "feeling the burn" and stretching/low impact aerobics I've ever experienced! This studio was incredibly welcoming and supportive of me, and made me feel entirely comfortable throughout every class. I loved it so much that I've been to three classes in four days (with a super busy schedule, no less). I HIGHLY recommend this studio to pretty much anyone who wants a killer workout while having a great time and feeling accomplished! read more

Pure Barre Annapolis is a great fitness studio. The energy is positive and empowering and the (either all or mostly women) staff is welcoming and friendly. There is a sort of trendy yoga/LuLu Lemon type vibe here which is enhanced by the fact that they sell stylish (and expensive) yoga-type workout clothing in the front of the studio. They incorporate their "barre" part of the studio name in cutesy ways on several shirts. It seems that they would appeal most to a 20-35 year old crowd. The instructors are in awesome shape which is motivating but they are not so overly buff that one would feel intimidated. The instructors also walk around during the class and help position you. The classes are not cheap ($25 a pop) but they do offer monthly packages which would help cut the cost down for the frequent exerciser. The one negative is that the workout requires some coordination and incorporates a lot of small muscle movements that, at least for me, do not come naturally. The instructor encouraged us to keep coming and that we would get more comfortable with the routine and small muscle movements after a few sessions (which I would agree seems reasonable). A lot stretching is included in the class which feels nice and helps connect you with your body. I would certainly recommend Pure Barre Annapolis but be ready for a different type of workout. read more

I want to give a shout-out and a "woohoo" for instructor, Jennifer Shelby. She is positive, runs around and corrects your form...gives you verbal encouragement and has great verbal instructions throughout the class. She is the only reason I come back, though, because at 60 years old and a bit overweight, this form of exercise and the pace are extremely difficult. The owner is not super friendly or encouraging, either. I enjoy places where you receive lots of "happy talk" and encouragement!! read more

I'd give the workout 3.5 stars as, if you have perfect form (but who does?), are a professional dancer (I am), a Pilates instructor (I am), or Barre instructor, this is the perfect workout for you. It's fast paced and very challenging. But the class could use either smaller class sizes, an assistant teacher to help with modifications and form, or, maybe best and easiest, a different approach to teaching classes. More about client education than client instruction. One helps the client understand form and function, and how an exercise is supposed to work mechanically- the other is a DVD. Albeit a good DVD, but still a DVD. See more below: Pure Barre gets 2 stars overall because of the overall lack of hand-on partnering and assistance given to students. The class ratio of 20 students to 1 teacher is very high, but not impossible. In every class I've been in, I've seen students struggle with exercises too hard for them, or weights to heavy for them. It'd be great if the teachers were encouraged to simply tell the individual students to drop the weights and keep the form rather than abandon form and look tough. The students don't know they are doing it wrong- the teacher does. And it has to be more about the student well-being than student ego. I've also rated as 2 stars because, today, one of the two entrances to their studio was complete closed, and it happened to be the entrance closest to the studio and not the one over a half mile away. The students registered for the class never got an email or phone call, but hey, let's assume they didn't know about the road closures until they got into work. Their other option was to lighten up their Weekend Restrictions of "if you're not here at 7:59, you can't take 8AM class", and gone with their still very tough, but more reasonable "you have 3 minutes after class start-time, or by the first plank, to make it in". I arrived at 8:01AM due to a 5 minute detour for trying to take the appropriate exit. I also called as soon as I saw that the exit was called, but even tough there's classes today, the teacher did not answer the phone. There was no post on Facebook, no email, no call, no text, no answering of phone, and no lessening of restrictions. Just a locked door even though I know for a fact class started 30 seconds before I got to the door. I know this because every class starts the same way, and they were doing the first move. Classes here range from $12-25, so they aren't cheap. Better customer service is expected from a studio that charges as much as they do and caters to women, many of whom are moms and have to work out their childcare in order to come to class. read more

The best place to workout in Annapolis! The instructors at this place are amazing - so energetic, professional, but also tough as nails. They really know their stuff and make an effort to correct and encourage everyone in the room multiple times. It's such an inviting and fun environment to work out in. I personally loved the platform classes most, but the pure barre classes were great as well. They always try to target slightly different muscle groups, so even if you go every day, you still get toned in new areas each time! Overall I really recommend this place. The month I spent here, I was the fittest I've ever been in my life. So sad I moved because there are no pure barres near me anymore! read more

I live in Los Angeles and I visit Annapolis several times a year. When I visit, I make sure to bring my sister-in-laws with me as our fitness activity! After this morning's 6:30am class, I will not be returning. The instructor was not helpful and she did not assist or correct my posture a single time during class, despite the fact that I was clearly in need of guidance. I tried to get her attention several times, but was ignored. Overall, unsavory experience. Do not come here if you are an athelete or have any healing injuries, as staff will not assist you. read more

After almost 3 years of going to Pure Barre I can tell it's gone gradually downhill. There used to be really good instructors, but everyone I loved has left and moved on to better opportunities. Current instructors - awful in my opinion. They obviously need more training because their instructions contradict what they really want you to do. Watching one of the new instructors, Emma, take a class I could tell she did not understand what Pure Barre stands for. Her moves had such large amplitude which negated all the previous direction for small, but targeted movements. I was watching her swing her legs back and forth and it killed all motivation to stick to this facility. The new renovation of the studio is another topic. Everything that gave this facility some charm was wiped clean. It became black and white, the signature barres everyone loved are gone, as well as the name boards that would show how close you were to a milestone. That was one way to celebrate customers and their achievements - GONE now. It was quite disappointing that I had been waiting to hit my 250th class for so long, and when it finally came - nobody acknowledged it. This huge milestone for which I spent so much time and money to achieve went completely unnoticed. The owner along with the instructor did not say a word. I received a lame generic email with congrats. This just shows how they really "value" their loyal customers. The worst part is payments. There are hidden terms - be aware of that. When you purchase a 4 class/monthly commitment, you are really signing up for another month - they require a 30 day notice to discontinue your autopay. There are no non-autopay options. This is how they recruit you for at least 2 months with your purchase of a 1 month membership. I have also previously frozen my membership due to pregnancy and kept being billed. I was lucky I had noticed the charges on my credit card statement and contacted Susan with a reminder that my membership is on freeze and there shouldn't be any new charges, but again it shows how sloppy their business management is. read more

I dropped in for one class while visiting my in-laws for the holidays. This is a perfectly fine barre studio, but I am used to non-chain/franchised studios. I've never been to PB before. The routine was a little bizarre, and the instructor did very little instructing. She just called out the beats and adjusted the music's volume every 30 seconds. I did not see her doing many adjustments or demonstrations, and there were women in there who might be hurting themselves. I am thankful for my studio in my hometown after this experience. read more

Didn't have a great experience here. I rec'd a gift certificate for my birthday and was really excited to try it out. I came into the studio and I got a kind of snobby vibe from the staff, almost like I was looked down upon for never doing barre before. I was in running shorts and they told me shorts are "not allowed" in their studio?? I asked why and they told me something about that is better for your muscles, which I am not arguing with, but I was in proper workout gear, soooo it's not really any of your damn business what's on my legs. You can suggest something and recommend that, but to say I'm not allowed to wear shorts was really weird and off-putting. They said they'd "allow" me to since I didn't know better. I did the class and it was a pretty good workout, but at one point I was too tall (6 feet) for a section of the workout and the teacher gave me a half-assed modification that didn't work at all so I just felt really stupid practically sitting there for a portion of the exercise. I didn't appreciate the lack of concern for me not being able to do an exercise. It made me feel ostracized... 6 feet isn't that tall. I'm not sure what they do when men come in or any other taller women. read more

I love this studio and the customer service I have received lately. I am back in the studio after time off from working out, and my primary goal is to build a better, stronger body, and lead a healthier lifestyle. I'd like to start by saying that today I had an issue with my package and booking my class so I called the studio and left a voicemail. When I called back later Susan informed me she already put me in for the class I requested and helped me trouble shoot my current package issue and asked me to check in with the front desk to make sure everything was working properly. I did as she asked and the girl at the front desk was so helpful and accommodating and made sure I would be taken care of. She even made a note to check on it again to make sure my next billing cycle would run smoothly. Logistics aside, each instructor I have had thus far has noticed I've been new to the studio and have introduced themselves to me. This is the only group workout I have ever attended ANYWHERE where the instructor will compliment you by name and take the time to adjust you so you are reaching a maximum benefit from the class. Not only that, but for a larger group it feels as if you are being treated like you would in a private training session and feel like you aren't left behind (even if you are new and confused). I was at the studio around 2 years ago for some drop in classes and feel as if my entire experience has only gotten better since then, and I've noticed the small improvements. I also appreciate cleanliness, and not allowing shoes in the studio floor space and other specific rules really does it for me. It's truly a full body experience and it's refreshing to feel comfortable being on the carpeted space! I highly recommend Pure Barre Annapolis if you are looking for a full body experience in a clean, positive space where the staff wants to see you succeed!! read more

Okay, so I guess my last review was flagged for not being helpful. Let me start this by stating that I do not work for Pure Barre and am not compensated by them in any way for writing the following (or previous) review. I'm just a big fan of the workout and love everything about it. I have some issues with my feet that keep me from partaking in any kind of exercises that involve jumping, stomping, or continual bouncing of the feet (such as running, dancing, etc). Basically, I can't do anything that's high impact. Pure Barre allows me to get a full body work out while maintaining "low impact" status. If there's a certain exercise that makes my body uncomfortable, the instructors are more than happy to show me how to make modifications to fit my needs. I love the instructors. I've worked out with almost every instructor that teaches at PB Annapolis and each one is amazing. I love that they use different exercises during the classes so that I don't get bored with attending classes (they use different music too, which is awesome!). I truly enjoy Pure Barre Lite on Saturdays, which is just a slower paced version of the regular class focused on perfecting your form. It's a nice change from the regular, more fast paced class sometimes. After attending classes for about four months, I'm still in love with the workout! It never gets easier, but that's not why people work out, right? However, you do get better at it. My abs look amazing, my "seat/ledge" is beginning to look better, as are my thighs. Overall, as someone who never really enjoyed working out before (and, therefore, would quit easily), I look forward to each class and can't see myself stopping anytime soon! read more

After reaching out to cancel a 4-pack pass for classes because it was not initially clear that this was a membership, I was met with not understanding or a willingness to cancel immediately but a snippy reply from the owner about how it is 'obvious' that packs are a recurring membership. I would have been charged $79 a month indefinitely had I not realized I had been charged on a recurring basis and sent an email to cancel- as a heads up you have to give 30 days notice to cancel so if you've purchased a pack for classes you are really agreeing to pay twice the amount you see, unless you give notice to cancel in 30 days they day you buy it. Plenty of people love pure barre and I enjoyed the classes when I attended them. However, there are plenty of other gyms and classes around the area who have an appreciation for customers who choose their businesses and do the right thing by them to secure their future business. This Pure Barre isnt one of those. read more

Classes are very challenging and fast paced. I'm not sure how safer they are though. The instructors don't take the time to look at body position, ask if anyone has injuries etc, or make suggested adjustments for those who need it. They are emotionless drill sergeants. In general, it's the least friendly place I've ever worked out---staff, instructors and clients. But a sacrifice I guess to get a good workout that shapes your body. read more

Love everything about Pure Barre!! Great facility, killer workout, and great instructor!! I've been to barre classes at other facilities, but none compared to Pure Barre!! I felt that I got my money's worth!! I've also been doing barre for 3-4 years at home with DVD's on/off so I am familiar with most of the moves, yet I did several new moves with Pure Barre. I was shaking throughout the class and had a to take a little break with some of the moves. The instructor I had was Gabrielle. She immediately introduced herself to myself and my friend and told us what to grab. She demonstrated moves and she came around to correct form. Additionally, she remembered our names to state that we had good form, which was motivating! I felt sore soon after the class today and know I will be more sore tomorrow, which means my body is changing! I will definitly be back! read more

I've been a regular at this studio since February and recently took my 100th class! Pure Barre recognizes milestones like completing 100 classes (next is 250 followed by 500) but most importantly the studio provides a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere every single day! I've always wanted to love working out and for the first time in my life I do - thanks to Pure Barre! I'm more toned than ever before and have muscles I didn't know existed. I have been attending Pure Barre since they opened and I LOVE it! the staff is awesome...and I actually would call them my friends...they are funny, and cheer you up when the last thing you want to do is workout.
