The food menu isn't huge which I think is good to keep the quality, which it does. You can expect in trend meals such as 'Mac & Cheese' & pulled pork etc as well as tradition pub favourites. However I feel the menu could be refreshed more often. I can highly recommend the gnocchi on the current menu. You can tell I've eaten there once or twice! Steak night on a Thursday is great and really popular. 2 good quality steak meals and a bottle of wine for £30. There are various themed evenings to check out and the odd event such as a cider and pork day festival that happened early this year, which was a lot of fun and family friendly to boot. All in all the Cross Hands is a good modern pub in the fishponds area that blends your classic local with good quality dining. What I really like about it is that it has a really cosy, proper pub feel to it, while also being a really good restaurant. The food these guys serve up is fantastic! They do a steak night which is every Thursday which is 2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £30, and with the quality of the food its a great deal. They have good outside seating areas at the front me back and have a brilliant hog roast and cider festival in the summer, with live bands and lots of banter. Sunday Lunches are also really good. But it's not all about the food, however good it is. This is a really good pub that feels like you're in your local, even if it's the first time you've been.

I had a couple of double whiskey and cokes and was feeling it alot more than normal after two drinks. I then slowed down and had a pint of bitter. I was served by two different people who were both very friendly and helpful. Due to my youthful looks I was ID'd here but they were apologetic when I finally produced proof. The food here is very good and very well priced, and, for me the Rummer Tavern has a certain charm which you simply struggle to find these days. Old pictures on the walls of the building over the years give you a good sense of the history of the place. Unlike some of the others (in Bristol anyway) it's actually quite large and being quite close to the Memorial Ground it attracts a large group of lager swilling Gas Heads on a Saturday afternoon. The food they serve is of the brasserie or ponced up British variety, but is fairly inexpensive for what you get (which is good). The other thing of note is the large garden which plays host to an annual music festival there and live music on Sunday evenings. With not a juke box, fruit machine or pool table in sight, it's an odd mix at times but a pretty decent boozer in my book.

Here is a bit of history the name is taken from the Mascot of the Royal 41st regiment of Wales. They carried a live goat on the Russian front line in the Crimean War. The goat survived the War and was introduced to Queen Victoria back in England. Originally simply called the Goat, the pub was renamed the Bluebell in 1813, and finally the Goat Major in 1995. To this day when the Royal Regiment of Wales names a new goat as its mascot they get several column inches dedicated to them in the Welsh press. I've never eaten here - nor would I want to as it strikes me a strictly drinking pub with lots of real ales on the menu and wall to wall dark wood panelling. Wednesday is Welsh night by the way and apparently the pub offers a range of Goat Major memorabilia - I can't say I'd noticed.

They didn't bother to contact me to explain or offer another day, I just got an automated email from their booking system. Emails to the landlord take several days to get a response and he has also not been reachable by phone. The only response from the landlord has been to say that they've decided not to be open Sunday January 1st 2023, but if they're going to take reservations so far ahead they should honour them, and simply block out days on the system for future bookings that they won't be open for. Their website says they are uniquely inhospitable. I agree with that assessment.

The Sportsman pub in Peterston, is a lovely pretty little pub bin an idyllic country village (the drive down really is beautiful). Even better (in my opinion) is that's rather upmarket, so you never have to worry about it getting rowdy, plus kids are most welcome. They also serve some really nice food; the main courses cost between £8-10 and a lot of care is put into preparing the food (unlike many pubs). I'd highly recommend this place!
