Specialist shops like this are always going to cost a bit to shop in, but I was pleasantly surprised to get a decent bike in the for about £200. The staff initially appear to be reassuringly knowledgeable, capable and friendly. However, every time I have been in there I have ended up with the same member of staff dealing with me. He appears to be unable to set my gears up right and when I took my bike in for a service and mentioned that they were not right he some how managed to make them worse. I was surprised by this. But they do seem quite busy which might have been the problem? What should be an excellent shop has been marred by of incidents of ineptness; perhaps I just got unlucky?

They are well-stocked with high quality cycling equipment and have a broad range of products for all kinds of cyclists and price-ranges. The shop is a good size and neatly stocked with a pleasant, welcoming atmosphere. They also do a wide range of repair services and the quality of their work can be evidenced by the fact that they also service the bikes of local police and paramedics! I recently bought a bike lock there and they were happy to give honest advice on the quality versus price dilemma, making me feel confident that I'd made the best choice for my budget.

How could she spend more on her bike than on her car? I didn't understand at all, nor did I understand what the big deal was, why the tears and the long face, if it was me I'd be sulking over knackering up my front end by smashing it into a tree on a cross country type bike ride and having to pay for it. She was scared to death that the integrity of her 'baby' had been compromised. The money was no object, just the quality of the service and repair. Alright then, catch you later, let me know how it goes, I called to her only to realise I was being dragged into the car with her. Damn. The three of us, me, she and the bike pull up at Bikology, it doesn't look much from the outside, but I was assured this was the place to go. Again with the cuddling of the bike, we wander in and are greeted by a smiley chappy who seemed to telepathically sense my friend's utter sense of loss. Taking it off her, they both engaged in mutual admiration of the bike, sorry Marin. He feels her pain, says it'll take a while, but it's totally fixable, he can have it as good as new. She asks a pitiful "do you promise?", followed by more reassurances. A few days later, we return, the bike looks all pretty again, and she seemed super pleased. It was a lot of money in my opinion, but again I was reassured this was a bargain, and after a test ride, she swore it was worth every penny. So excellent place to go if you've got a two wheeled treasure in sincere need of some TLC.

So if you're thinking of setting yourself up on two wheels, or have an old bike that needs repairing, this emporium of all things bike is a must-visit. With new and custom build bikes at competitive prices, a workshop for servicing and repairs and friendly, knowledgeable staff, you feel that you're getting real advice to suit your needs here, rather than the hard sell you'd get at a larger chain store. For the more seasoned cyclists they do a 'bike MOT' from £30, and the fact that they also service unicycles reminds you, in case you forget, that you are in Hyde Park after all...

They add in unexpected costs that were never quoted and that I am just expected to pay without prior agreement. I phone them up to query this and all I get is a half-hearted apology. We browsed most of the bike shops in york and finally decided on buying from Fulford cycles. What set them aside from the other shops, apart from the huge and varied range of shiny (bike porn) as my boyfriend calls it, was the helpfulness of the staff and the attention to detail in finding the right bike for me. Most of the other bike shops just pulled a bike from the rack asked me to sit on it and after lowering the seat said yeah !thats the bike for you and that was it. At Fulford cycles they asked which kind of bike I was after, how much riding did I expect to do where I would mainly be cycling etc so as to get a bigger picture of bike style and spec. Once I had decided on the bike (mountain bike) I was then measured for seat height, distance from bars (reach). they tried various stem length to find the right one and then even replaced saddle for a more comfortable one. Even the tyres were changed for me to a more town riding hybrid style. Basically I got a tailor made bike.Overall I was very impressed with the shop, very clean well set out, lots of stock, very friendly, knowledgable staff.
