I wonder if employees are volunteers because they seemed to consist of sweet old ladies (and dudes). There are storage lockers to put some bags. The museum has a nice layout, and I believe can change every exhibition. It looked as though the walls were movable and customizable according to the exhibition and number of pieces shown. The Empire of Light is the capstone to this museum, but unfortunately, a lot of his other notable works are elsewhere. There seem to be a dozen exits and entrances, but you can only use the most inconvenient one. There are three floors and you start from top to bottom. An elevator exists, but it seems to be used primarily for the timed groups coming into the museum. You can buy your tickets from kiosks, and FINALLY they have a ticket option for disabled. If I'm gonna be crippled, I hope I can at least get a discount.

The visit was enhance by the self guided audio tour where we had the opportunity to hear what some instruments sound. The building itself was amazing. I highly recommend visiting Musee des Instruments de Musique while in Bruxelles.

It's a collection of musical instruments from all over the world, and many of them are hundreds of years old. All of the instruments are in a glass case or behind a rope (for obvious reasons) and they give you an audio guide to listen to what it sounds like. There were so many instruments I had never even heard of. We got there at around 10:30 on a Saturday and there were a good amount of people there already (they open at 9:30). It got crowded later on so I would recommend going on a weekday if you can. We spent about an hour and a half there and got through most of everything we wanted. There are four floors, so at first, we were listening to every piece but eventually we started to just choose the things we were interested in. If you were to listen to everything, my guess is that it would probably take 3-4 hours. They have over 2,000 instruments. Highly recommend, if you love music and are looking for something different to do!

Just a heads up -- the majority if art in here is by other artists. There are a few wonderful…read morepieces from Rubens himself but don't expect a museum of his work. This is mostly art that was part of his personal collection and the work of his contemporaries. Rubens is an example of an artist that was successful during his lifetime. He operated a studio and was very in demand. Thus, due to his wealth, the house is quite beautiful. The tour of the house is self-guided. They have booklets in various languages with numbers corresponding with art pieces. You just follow the path and bury your nose in your booklet to learn about the art. You don't need too much time here. If you move fast, you can probably see everything in one hour. This may change depending on how crowded the museum gets. The rooms are pretty small but it wasn't too bad when I came here since it was a rainy day at the end of August. **Make sure you see everything. The last room is the most beautiful (large paintings). Don't skip the courtyard in the back either -- gorgeous architecture (although they are currently restoring it). **Free on the last Wednesday of the month. I had no idea but just so happened to visit Antwerp on this day so I got very lucky.

The Rubenshuis, which was the home of the famous painter Pieter Paul Rubens is a site to see if you…read moreneed time to kill. From the outside it looks tremendous and while it does not disappoint from the inside, I felt a little down after seeing the whole thing. Now while this is not the cheapest attraction in the town by far, it will not break the bank, the problem really comes down to what you are expecting. I expected to see more of the lifestyle of Pieter Paul Rubens, but what I got was a refinished house full of art setup in the way of a small art museum. Do not get me wrong, the sculptures and paintings are wonderful, but nothing to write home about when compared to many other museums nearby. Couple that with the small hallways and large crowds and it will have you rushing for the exit as soon as possible. We ended up walking around pretty freely as not many were there an hour after the opening on a crummy weather day, but as we were leaving, we saw a HUGE group heading in, so be aware this may not be friendly for those with no patience or claustrophobic. On the plus side, the back yard and garden is beautiful in the Spring and Summer, but sadly the buildings facade was getting a makeover when we were there. Was it deserving of more than a three star, yes, but I'd leave it at a 3.5 out of 5 to be honest. Still worth visiting though if you read up on it beforehand and interests you.

Foundation Frison Horta is a private home and occasional event/art space designed by architectural…read moremaster and co-founder of the Art Nouveau movement, Victor Horta. The home is available for small private tours by its current owner. If you are an architectural nerd like me who loves Victor Horta and/or Art Nouveau architecture, it is worth a visit. Many aspects of the home have been preserved like door handles and hinges. Other elements of the home have been painstakingly restored by the home's current owner and carefully selected Belgian artisans. Many of the home's furnishings are well curated to compliment the home, which is what Victor Horta would have initially designed and wanted. Horta didn't just design the home but how to live and work in a space, including fixtures and furnishings. Because it is a private home, the tour extends to the ground floor, the l'orangerie, and a couple of the reception rooms. Shoes are required to be removed prior to touring the home. A book describing the owner's restoration efforts is available for purchase at the end of the tour. I enjoyed my experience. I removed a star because I think some of the descriptions in the book and tour were somewhat embellished.
