This YHA is right across the street from the New World supermarket, making it easy to stock up on…read moresupplies. It's also quite close to the waterfront including Te Papa and Oriental Bay. There is no parking on site, but there are a few paid options nearby. The queen private ensuite room is quite large. It was clean and well-maintained. Note that the room didn't have its own hair dryer, the nearest was in a shared bathroom. This differs from YHA Lake Tekapo which has a hair dryer in the ensuite rooms.

It's called a hostel, but it looked quite a bit more like a regular hotel, and I got a private room…read morefor pretty cheap. Their amenities are great; the laundry machines self-dispense detergent (note to other hotels: travelers do not carry detergent), the internet is free without a password and works reasonably well. It was six stories high, but their elevators were speedy. The location was just on the edge of where you'd want to be in Wellington. It catered to all sorts of people; tourists like myself, but also a conference of deaf people, and some older types who seemed to be using it as a halfway house and some younger backpackers. The big negative was the noise level, which was often annoying though not intolerable. But if you're willing to get yourself a good pair of earplugs and share a bathroom, you can stay in Wellington for a good rate.

The big problem faced by most business travelers is how to keep fit on the road…read more Hotel gyms are often no more than an exercise bike, a treadmill and a few dumbbells. Restaurants are too expensive to allow one to eat in quantity, and pigging out at the hotel buffet will result in a high consumption of eggs, bacon and sausage (with the attendant cholesterol problem). But that is not a problem at the Mercure Wellington Central City Hotel and Apartments. These are service apartments. You get a full kitchen with microwave, refrigerator, stove top, pots, pans, plates, cups and silverware. You can do your own cooking, and control exactly what you eat. Of course, you also have the option to eat a full buffet breakfast at the restaurant. Close by is the NW Supermarket on Wakefield Street. My suggestion is to apply for an NW Clubcard. This will entitle you to all their promotional discounts. While the card is intended for long-term customers, NW will issue you with a temporary card which will entitle you to immediate discounts. The market has its own deli, bakery and liquor section. Your clubcard will give you discounts to all these sections. As a Mercure tenant, you have full access to Les Mills Gym. This is a world class gym founded by New Zealand Commonwealth Games shot put and discus thrower Les Mills. The gym has a free weight floor with multiple bench press stations (no waiting), squat racks and cable rows. There is a separate floor for stationary bikes, treadmills, and stair-climbers. There is another floor with padded platforms for clean and jerks, as well as a boxing ring. There is a separate female gym. There are a variety of exercise classes, all of which are free. There is a health food café, and a shop selling supplements. Nearby is the Te Papa Museum, a grand affair that covers every aspect of New Zealand from forestry to farming, from military to maritime. Craig is a guide there .... And a good friend. Tell him I said hello. Nearby also is the Great War Exhibit, which features work by Lord of the Rings Director Peter Jackson depicting the struggle that decimated New Zealand young men. Ask the tour guide about how the great Liege forts fell apart due to shoddy construction (I did that part myself, and you can hear all about how Belgian contractors left the rebar out of the concrete, poured the cement in fragile layers, and sited the latrines where soldiers could not reach them under fire). Visit also the Wellington Museum, and learn about the sinking of the ferry Wahine, a tale as terrible as the Titanic. Do all these things, because New Zealanders are proud people who will expect you to understand and connect with them BEFORE you can do any business. Good luck!!
