My friend made the mistake of putting the $50 hold on her credit card. When I tried to check out at 6 AM (friend was sleeping), I wasn't able to pay for her room because of this $50 charge on her card. What?? The early morning clerk was a young lady with no knowledge and no power. She offered to call her manager but at 6 AM that seemed like a bad idea. I knocked on my friend's door but she was still sleeping. So for this little simple thing, we were very inconvenienced and it took me too long to get going on the road. I just opened my credit card bill two weeks later to find that $50 security charge on my card still there. I had to call this morning and they told me they didn't know anything about it. They removed it, they said but I don't see it. They advised me to call my bank. Sure, I should spend a long time on the phone because on their policies? No, thanks. I don't know if I would stay here again. I don't want to have to go through all the hassles and phone calls to pay. Seems as though the company could simplify this somehow.

At 4:18 am the smoke alarm blared in the hallway for about 15 minutes. We called the desk. Oh, it went off last week too. There was a coffee maker but no pot nor coffee. When we checked out we were told the room was at the end of the hot water line so we should have run it for 15 minutes. We told the person at the desk the other problems and she said the manager was not there but she will discount the bill. She gave us $18 discount. NEVER AGAIN. Breakfast was excellent and service too.

Do Not Stay Here - Filthy, Outdated, and Unsafe!…read more Unfortunately, my stay at this hotel was a terrible experience, and I ended up leaving four days early because I no longer felt safe or comfortable staying there. The property was filthy, extremely outdated, and nothing like the pictures advertised online. When I first arrived, it was the middle of the night, and I immediately had concerns about the condition and safety of the property. I asked about getting a refund, but they refused to refund me. Since it was so late and I had nowhere else to go at that hour, I decided to try to make the situation work and stay for the night. There were serious security concerns throughout the property. Several exterior entrances did not have functioning locks, and the card readers appeared to be broken. During my stay, I also experienced people trying door handles, knocking on windows, and knocking on guest-room doors. There were also men lingering in the hallways for extended periods, which was very unsettling, especially given the lack of functioning security measures. The condition of the property was also unacceptable. There was visible mold in my room and on the first floor, along with a strong smell and what appeared to be mold throughout the hallways on the second floor. These were not minor cleanliness issues--they were serious concerns that made me question whether the property was being properly maintained. I tried to make the best of the situation, but after dealing with these conditions and the ongoing safety concerns, I ultimately decided I could not stay there and left four days before my reservation ended. What was most frustrating was how management handled the situation. Even after I left early because of the conditions and safety concerns, the hotel refused to refund me for the four nights I did not stay. They kept the money for nights when I was no longer even at the property. The owners also seemed to be lingering around frequently during the day, but at night, when security was a major concern, they were nowhere to be found. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. The hotel did not resemble the photos, the property was poorly maintained, there were serious security concerns, and management refused to refund the unused nights. I tried to make the situation work because of the late-night arrival and their refusal to refund me, but ultimately I felt I had no choice but to leave. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere if cleanliness, safety, and basic security are important to you!

Some rooms felt a little piecemeal antiqued, but it's understandable that many of the houses original furnishings and artifacts have moved on with the past owners. We spent a little time relaxing in the living room which was comfortable. We enjoyed exploring the downstairs rooms and tremendously enjoyed art and some of the beautifully crafted woodworking throughout the house. The real highlight of the stay was the secret Underground Railroad quarters in the basement. It was a fascinating space, had some great written interpretation, and was decorated in a great homage to the era. The experience of discovering this space was a mini-adventure that we really appreciated and enjoyed. All in all, communication for booking the place was easy, as was check-in and check-out. Our only criticism is that it felt more like an Air BnB rather than a true b&b because we never actually met any of the property owners or staff and breakfast was a 24 hour make-it-yourself continental breakfast with generously stocked supplies and groceries. Nevertheless, it's a fantastic place to spend a day and get a good night's rest! Thanks Linda and Dawn!

Blame it on beginning of the year teacher brain. We spoke to the owner and were charmed. We made Galesburg or halfway point so we didn't have travel as far each way. When we arrived, the Great House was just in front of us and it was GREAT! The immense house was beautiful. We followed the entry steps and let ourselves in. We found our room, got settled and quickly explored the beauty of the first floor. The safe was the most surprising beautiful aspect for me. We did not have much time, as we headed to Reserve Artisan Ales for a bite. When we came back around 10, house was quiet. We left early the next morning to be able to make our ticketed plans in Galena in time and did not utilize the 24 hour continental breakfast option (at all during our stay). When we returned around 930 that evening, the guests were quiet, as well. While I was awake between 2 and 430, I was able to hear others having conversation and utilizing the restroom in their rooms. If you are not a light sleeper, this should not be bothersome (as my husband slept through it). The house is beaitiful and well maintained. I did utilize the Keuring PJ coffee bar in the morning. All four rooms for rent are on the second floor.

The room I rented was a 12x12 and by paying 3 weeks in advance and helping out around the place it came to $300. That included all utilities and internet. I dont know of any 8x8 rooms. There are exercise machines, a great kitchen, pool table, foosball etc. The staff is nice and there are janitorial services everyday. If you dont have a lot of money this is a great place to live, it is limited to disabled, students and vets though.

It's a run-down halfway house and a lot of the people who live there are recent parolees (there's a medium security men's prison a few miles away) or trying to get sober. I was in town to visit my best friend who's incarcerated at Hill Correctional Center, and I didn't feel safe. People are loud; drinking and smoking openly, swearing in the hallways. I saw broken windows and cockroaches. The walls are blackened from handprints, the washrooms are filthy and moldy, and 2/3 refrigerators non-functional. The room they gave me didn't have curtains on the windows and directly faced the parking lot, making it easy for people to watch me while I slept if I had stayed the night. As a young woman travelling alone, this is unacceptable. I played along with the building's manager when I talked to him, pretending like everything was fine to avoid confrontation and then left in the middle of the night for a hotel room instead. Air BNB customer service was great; after I mesaged them to tell them what I saw, and sent them photos of the property they gave me a full refund, an extra $50 for the inconvenience, and took down their listing. However, they keep reposting the property with new accounts. I keep reporting them, though.
