I feel a bit weird rating a place of worship, but it's also a place for festivals, so I think it's OK. Also, as an outsider I like how this place is welcoming to tourists and people genuinely curious in Buddhism, so I'm gonna go ahead and review it.
I came here for the cherry blossom festival on a Saturday in late August. It was PACKED. While there were a few cherry trees around, it was nothing like Japan in spring -- but that's OK. You come more for the food and festivities than the actual cherry blossoms. This is a Vietnamese temple, and 97% of the people here seemed to be speaking Vietnamese around me.
There was a procession of the monks, little handicrafts for sale, some informative brochures about Buddhism, a farmer's market, and a huge free meal available in the enormous dining hall. Sadly, even though I arrived 15 minutes after they began serving the free meal, it was so disorganized a bunch of us got into the wrong line and had to switch lines, and then that line ran out of food, so we joined a THIRD line and then THAT line ran out of food -- about 15 people ahead of me. So after waiting in line for 45 minutes, I got no free food. Disappointing. (I didn't care that it was free -- I just wanted to try vegetarian Buddhist Vietnamese food out of curiosity.)
The temple grounds themselves are quirky with interesting art. You can stroll all the way down to the river if you want -- it's lovely and peaceful down there, but a hike up the hill to get back to the temple!
The temple itself is massive and quite pretty, and I spent an hour wandering through it and the grounds.
The temple isn't far from a bus line.
The other downside is my partner stopped for a minute -- literally, LESS than a minute -- to drop me off at the temple, and got a fine in the mail for over $200 for stopping in a "No Stopping" zone!! WTH Maribyrnong Council! So definitely don't do that if you're dropping someone off at the temple here. read more
