This is one of the less expensive tennis clubs in Toronto and a great place to play if you're just starting out. Membership comes with 5 free group lessons and the option to join their league which matches you with players of similar skill level and gender. The dress code is relaxed. The guy that runs it is friendly as can be and always around to check on things and make sure everything is running smoothly. There is a 45 minute max for playing if there are people waiting so you can show up whenever and never have to worry about waiting too long for one of the 4 courts. The courts are not in perfect condition but certainly good enough for the average player. The hours are a bit restricted if, and only if, you don't have a day job since they share the courts with the school. For the rest of us, you won't even notice the lack of week day hours. These are the hours: Weekdays - 6 PM to 10:30 PM Saturday/Holidays - 9 AM to 10:30 PM Sunday - 9 AM to 6:00 PM The courts are also open to the public on Sundays from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM or as a member you can bring a guest anytime for just $5.

Since it was a birthday party, I don't know what it costs to rent out all of the ice (or the sheets, as they call it), but if drinking and throwing stones down ice sounds like your kind of thing, I'm certain it's worth it. The bar was a bit pricier than I was anticipating. I was picturing more like a legion-style situation, with twoonie beers and no mix, but they actually have a proper wooden bar that takes debit and serves up $20 pitchers. Not as fun as what I was picturing, but fair enough, it is in beautiful High Park after all. Sweep!

My curling debut was pretty memorable, as I caught on relatively quickly to how the game works. The staff here gives an exhaustive explanation of the rules and makes it easy for novices to pick up the game. Great game, better company, made for a pretty amazing three hours on a Friday afternoon. We had unfettered access to the entire rink, which made for an exclusive experience. Solid beer selection behind the bar certainly doesn't hurt. Can't wait until next year's Malanka Curling Cup in January!

I don't play Badminton, Racquetball or Tennis so it's clear that I'm not a member, but we came here for our work christmas dinner. The Club itself is fairly large, given that its smack dab in the middle of the city. However, as we went through a tour of the facilities and the building itself, its very clear that the building is old and disjointed and lacks proper flow from one area to another. The courts seemed to be in quite good condition though and you could tell this was an upscale type of club. The area where we had our lunch was quite nicely refinished and looked very crisp. We were seated in a room with a large round table for lunch. There was a set Christmas menu with choice for the main: squash and apple soup, a choice of Turkey Dinner, Salmon or Vegetarian and Christmas "pudding" for dessert. The food was quite good, I very much enjoyed the soup, a nice hearty appetizer for a cold day. The Turkey dinner was great, stuffing, vegetables, turkey, cranberry sauce and potatoes. The Christmas "pudding" was a bit odd, more like a cake with a small scoop of ice cream, but still good. Overall, it was a good experience for a staff luncheon but I dont' think I would recommend this venue for anything other than a relatively casual lunch (provided you know someone who's a member) as the facilities just don't seem to be able to handle much beyond that.

Yes, they can host weddings (or in the event I went to, a funeral - yay), but really in the city you could do much better. Their space is nice, through slightly dated, probably due to an older demographic who frequents the club (I assume!). It seems to me that they are going for a "classic" look, but the result is more of a "dated" look - it reminds me a lot of the Faculty Club at the University of Toronto - in fact I wouldn't be surprised if these clubs were somehow linked. In terms of food, they do make a mean cheese platter - at their finger sandwiches are definitely tasty. Also, the bartenders are heavy handed on the alcohol - which may have not been the most appropriate at the event I was attending - but you know. The bartenders themselves were quite friendly and one in particular makes quite a delicious caesar! The only part of the club that does not need an update, in my opinion, are the washrooms. I am a sucker for venue-branded one time use towels (I know, I'm a tree killer) and soaps and lotions, apparently. Overall as a venue, this place is ok, but nothing special. In a city of hundreds on venues, you could definitely do a lot better (but also a lot worse) than the Badminton & Racquet Club.

When a private lesson spot was given away without warning to another student because "our daughter was a lower priority", Tessa added salt to injury by treating us to a very rude, condescending and disrespectful rant in front of other parents. We were shocked at her uncaring, rude and elitist attitude. After that, we will take our business where we are appreciated and respected. At Tessa Tennis, you will get none of that respect as a customer, unless you happen to be her "priority". This is no reflection of her staff, many of whom are great and there are instructors like Arthur who are truly wonderful and made a big difference. The problem is they are working for the wrong "boss". Shame!

To what Mayfair has responded - they are shifting blame towards the members. As this is not an isolated incident; the apparent authority of a membership services employee* and the clubs subsequent failure to take accountability for the loss of their members is extremely disappointing. Their revenues are hurting from the new upgrades and members getting fed up and leaving - it will surely only get worse until they become insolvent.

Finally the change room was re-opened after almost a year of renovation in which members had to…read moretolerate the inconvience of not having a proper change room after a fire. To my surprise, during this month of July, Mayfair was almost filled with students and swimming lessons through the day and members' right as a member are severely compromised. When I try to book a lane swimming this morning, there was almost nil openings until after 7 p.m. I think this is a serious breach of membership's rights under a contract for services with the club and someone should start a class action to seek a partial refund of the membership fees. I look forward to responses from members that will echo my grievances.

Unionville tennis club is literally in my backyard. so the location…read moreis fantastic! for me that is. i love this community club. it is a private club but not for profit. it is entirely run by a group of dedicated volunteers most of whom have lived in Unionville all their lives. they spend a crazy number of hours FREE just to keep this club running well and keeping it affordable for all. The early bird membership for adults for the entire season (April to October) is only $120 and no court fee!!! yet, the club has a full time MONITOR to organize and facilitate court booking. They have 9 top-notch courts (4 rebuild last year) and three of them are CLAY courts (green clay). i am so lucky to have accept to this club. they have a tennis pro who is amazing (Andy Sutton) with 20+ years of experience. they offer a lot of organized events (round robins) and doubles. they have teams for all ages as well and their junior teams perform well - usually 1st or 2nd in the region.

Gonna feature some of the first impressions highlights from that review I'd written here (but will also come back to provide updates or post supplemental reviews after some additional visits): Here are my thoughts on Plock Tennis Club, which is a beautifully furnished, welcoming, and trailblazing facility. I'll elaborate: Beautifully furnished -- the decor is aesthetically intricate with tan/brown painted flooring that emulates clay/hard courts; green fences, green painted doors, and even green painted flooring inside the men's change-room to give it that "Tennis Green" vibe. There's also a lot of Tennis-themed ornamentation including rackets (which they sell!) and framed photos of popular pros like Rafael Nadal. Welcoming -- their front desk set-up is there to support you! Men's change-room has lockers (as well as a shower). There is a cozy lounge area upstairs with an equipment station for racket stringing. Trailblazing -- fancy word here, ya? I'll clarify: as far as I'm aware, Plock's Tennis Club is unequivocally unique with its state-of-the-art, intuitively user-friendly iPad/tablet controlled "ball launchers." Beyond the innovative technology layer, the notion that warranted the "trailblazing" label was the appeal of "independent tennis training" (not needing to play with a friend). As far as I'm aware, they seem to be pioneers and a first-of-its-kind place to offer this in Toronto [don't (or actually, please do) come @ me if I'm wrong, but in the meantime, I think the trailblazing label is deserved]. Game, Set, M...embership: During my initial visit, I had the chance to chat with the owners, Tina and Robert. Speaking to them was an absolute pleasure. They're extremely passionate, diligent, and I have a ton of respect for their ambitious business venture. What really stood out was that they were NOT AT ALL "pushy" or "sales-pitchy" about their memberships--almost to a fault (or a "double-fault"?), as they seemed primarily focused on simply providing a great experience and showcasing what the facility can do. It worked out perfectly, though, because by the end of our conversation, I basically SOLD MYSELF ON BECOMING A MEMBER. The $169 "Summer Membership" (a 6-month Starter Bundle that includes 3 individual booking sessions and other perks) seemed like a very reasonable value proposition, so that's exactly what I signed up for. Honestly, even though there is a logical rationale behind their various "peak" vs. "non-peak" and seasonal rates, my first impression of the pricing chart was that it felt convoluted af. But the $169 Starter Bundle bypasses all of that and simplifies the registration process perfectly IMO. Looking forward to getting back on the courts!
