Grand Avenue Public Library is serving its community in many different ways. It is not a modern library compare to others but it will get its turn to be renovated and modernized. Okay I admit, I go here for the DVDs. Rich W schooled me. Showing me a library is not as creepy as I remembered as a kid..... I had a creepy experience as a kid in a library that involved a man doing something behind the stacks. BAD MEMORIES! Back to the regular channel...DVDs....so Rich W. showed me there are DVDs to borrow at the library. WOW. He said...see libraries are friendly places. It felt like therapy when he showed me the library! He told me the other day there are books beyond the DVD rack! I was like...really??!! I seriously just come here for the DVDs and for computer use. I am not familiar with the rest of the library. Other than the bathroom here needs serious cleaning...just sayin'. read more

We moved to the area about five years ago. Yes this library is the closest one to the neighborhood. My son loves to read. I was glad and thought it was so convenient for us to find a library so closed to our house. We've been borrowing books here almost every week. Each time we kinda hope to see a smile from the librarians who work here. Nope! Not a single one of them shows hospitality, sadly! They are not really willing to help you with anything. We love to read so we still go but we just learn that we are not supposed to ask or question anything or even look at the librarians. Kinda scary! Oh, well... read more

The librarians here always seem really miserable, it makes me sad. I blame the self-checkout machines. The librarians don't handle your card or books at all, ever. In fact that seemingly convenient automated return system outside that lets you return books 24/7 is also the *only* way to return books. Oh, it's pouring rain in January and you're a senior citizen? Too bad! Back outside you go! As someone whose worked a self-checkout machine I can understand how being forced to do nothing all day and only deal with customers when there's a problem can suck the life and joy right out of you, so it's hard to blame them. I try to be especially nice and keep conversation to a minimum, but the only time they can muster enough life to even make eye contact is when they're not behind that self-checkout desk. My real issue is being forced to use an automated system every visit, but I also know that whenever I go I'm going to see someone curling up into themselves, wishing to be anywhere but there. read more

I had breakfast over at Good Eats Diner, then walked over to CVS. On our way back to the car, I was with my son and sister in-law, and we bumped into a really friendly mom with her daughter. She was bringing her into the library and invited us to join them for playtime and story time. I was intrigued so we went in with them. The library has a room in the back. They had many toys for toddlers to play with. It was impressive, organized, and clean. My son had a great time playing with their toys and making interactions with other kids his age. The kids here were also very well behaved. They weren't animals. Everyone including the parents and librarians were all so friendly and polite. We were there a brief period. My meter was running up and we also had plans for the day. I spoke with the librarian on our way out and she said to check their monthly calendar for events. In June, they had their playtime on Friday's. July is completely different. I would highly recommend bringing your kids here especially in the summer time to just cool down and relax a bit. The library looks very well maintained. I haven't been in this neighborhood regularly since my middle school days at I.S.73, but now that I know this library holds events like these for kids my son's age, I wouldn't mind coming back at all. Meter parking in this neighborhood isn't that bad and I was really pleased with the behavior and friendliness of other parents. It's way better than any library experience I had with my son in Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, and Flushing. read more

Growing up around here, I used to love going to the library, it was a magical place for children full of great books and interesting workshops. Now, I absolutely despise going to the library. It turned into a place for old people to meet up, occupy all the tables and chairs to gossip, and homeless people to stay around during the day. That is so unsanitary! The old people also spend hours and hours hogging up the computers which makes it impossible for college students like me to get any work done. The librarians also have bad attitudes and favor the old people over the kids, there have been several incidents where I overheard the librarians talking about kids in a negative way, they even scold the kids from speaking to each other, but allow the elderly to gossip as loud as they please which is extremely distracting. I get that they can't kick people out of the library, it has just lost its touch as a magical place and turned into something much more dreary. read more

I'm surprised no one has dropped a thing to say about this library! I was getting very nostalgic what with the holiday season and the fact that my kids are growing up so fast! It got me thinking of how I managed even with just one baby. I remembered our old neighborhood and the simple things we did that made us happy. Visiting the library was one of them. We lived on the border of Elmhurst and Maspeth and therefore had two choices of library access: the one on Broadway and the one on Grand Avenue. I found the Elmhurst library to be too crowded and thus, too busy. The Maspeth branch had a more serene atmosphere and was brighter in terms of lighting. I thought the librarians were very helpful. What I miss so much are the classes they have for toddlers. My eldest had her first "reading" class here. She was only 6 months old then. I do not know if they still carry out classes like these but for a time, they offered sessions for babies. There was a lot of singing, and use of puppets (Old MacDonald Had a Farm), and bright colors. The librarian who did this was just amazing! She was talented! If I could just tell her how far my daughter's love for reading and the arts has gone and thank her for it. Maspeth residents, how lucky your kids are! read more

The staff members of Queens libraries tend to be very angry, which results in unpleasant treatment of the patrons. I stopped in today, just to take a peek, never having been to this branch before. I found it well- & intuitively organized, bright & generally user-friendly. I asked one of the staff members if I could purchase a bag & she actually smiled when she answered that they were complimentary. I made a joke about liking to ask before I grab at things & she smiled BROADLY in some sort of genuine reaction. Of course, I also expressed my general approval of the branch, so maybe she was just happy to hear something positive from someone who walked through the door. In any case, I'll be visiting this branch again. read more

I would have given this place the five stars but...the librarian though. I have to admit the librarians are the nicest people in the world. But then there is that guy that sighs at the children who are in 8th grade using the adult computers. (7th grade-up can use the computers!) I have nothing really to be complain about but its the people who come to the library who can ruin the experience. This kid used the computer doing his work, and the guy complains how he uses the computers and is taking up all of the necessary space. Where there are other people who did not use the comp. for useful work. Why point out the productive student. The next day I see him come and the student comes back, and uses the the comp. The guy sighed and gave an attitude to the student. That really hurt the boy and i can tell in his eyes, about to cry. Sometimes people have no heart and can learn, this place was awesome until the librarians let this happen. In summary, place is great, but people ruin it for others. read more

Sorry to see some negative reviews about the library that I enjoy regularly. I go to the library all the time to use the computers and borrow movies. I took my kids for programs when they were little. All the librarians are always pleasant to me. read more
